Wrong return-to-work date on EDD SDI claim - Update now or wait?

I'm currently on disability and just realized the expected return to work date on my EDD claim is way off. My doctor originally put April 15th, 2025 as my return date, but my treatment is going better than expected and I should be able to return around March 20th instead. I'm not sure what the right protocol is here - should I call EDD directly to correct this, have my doctor submit a new medical certification with the updated date, or just wait until closer to my actual return date to deal with it? I'm worried about being overpaid and having to deal with that mess if I don't fix it now. Anyone dealt with something similar?

wait i'm confused... if ur returning EARLIER than expected isnt that a good thing? u wont be overpaid cuz ur stopping benefits sooner right? i think u only need to update if ur extending ur disability period not shortening it

This is incorrect. You absolutely need to update your return-to-work date with EDD even if returning earlier than expected. If you don't, the system will continue generating payments until the original end date, resulting in an overpayment that you'll have to repay later. Always keep your claim information current to avoid complications.

Update: I spoke with my doctor's office and they submitted the supplemental certification form yesterday. The office staff said they do these all the time and it should process within 7-10 days. I'll update again once I see changes in my EDD account. Thanks for all the advice!

Great to hear you're recovering faster than expected! Just wanted to add that when you do return to work, make sure to report your first day back immediately through your EDD online account or by calling. Even with the updated medical certification, you'll still need to confirm your actual return date to officially close out the claim. Also keep all documentation from your doctor's office - if there are any processing delays or issues, having that paper trail will save you headaches later.

This is really helpful advice! I had no idea you needed to report the actual return date separately even after updating the medical certification. Question - do you know if there's a specific timeframe for reporting your first day back? Like do you have to do it the same day you return or can you wait a few days? Just want to make sure I don't mess anything up when the time comes.
