EDD SDI payment delayed after doctor marked 'permanent disability' - stuck in limbo for weeks

I've hit a really frustrating roadblock with my wife's disability claim and hoping someone can help! She's been receiving SDI since February 2025 for chronic back issues, and payments have been going smoothly until now. Every previous time her doctor submitted a new medical certification, the payments continued without a hitch - usually approved within 1-2 days. But this time things are different. Her doctor submitted the latest Med Cert form on June 8th (about 3 weeks ago), but instead of the usual quick approval, her claim is just sitting there. Not approved, not denied - just nothing happening at all. I checked her SDI Online account and it shows the form was received, but the status hasn't changed. The difference? This time her doctor checked the box indicating she has a permanent disability and cannot return to her previous occupation. I've sent two messages through the portal asking about the status but haven't received any response. Her last payment was nearly a month ago and bills are piling up. Has anyone experienced this delay when their claim switches to permanent disability status? Any suggestions on what we should do next?

This happened to me last year. When your doctor marks 'permanent disability,' it triggers a different review process at EDD. They're likely looking at whether she should be transitioned to long-term disability insurance or possibly Social Security Disability. In my case, it took about 5 weeks before they made a determination. The annoying part is they don't tell you this is happening - the claim just sits there.

Thanks for sharing your experience. 5 weeks is a long time to wait without income! Did you eventually get backpay for all the weeks during the review period? And did they contact you for any additional information during that time?

ya gotta call them!!!! waiting for messages to be answered is useless with edd. they probably need more info from the doctor or something. my brothers claim was stuck for like a month and then when he finally got thru they said they needed clarification on somethin

I've been trying to call but can't get through. Just constant busy signals or the automated system disconnects me after saying they're experiencing high call volume.

I went through something similar in April. The permanent disability checkbox basically puts your claim into a special review queue. EDD has to determine if you qualify for continued SDI benefits or if they need to refer you elsewhere. It's SUPER frustrating because they don't communicate what's happening. Have you tried calling the SDI office directly? That's the only way I finally got answers.

I've been trying to call every day but can't get through to an actual person. It's so frustrating! Were you able to get through on the main SDI number or is there a special number I should be trying?

When a doctor marks permanent disability, EDD has to evaluate whether the claim should continue under SDI or be referred to another program. This triggers what's called a "Special Evaluation Review" that can take 4-6 weeks. Unfortunately, this often creates a payment gap. A few suggestions: 1. Have your wife's doctor contact EDD directly through the medical provider line 2. Request an expedited review due to financial hardship 3. If her condition qualifies, you might want to look into SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) as well, though that's a separate program The good news is that once they complete the review, they'll typically issue retroactive payments for the gap period if the claim is approved for continuation.

Thank you for this detailed information! I didn't know about the "Special Evaluation Review" process. I'll definitely ask her doctor about contacting EDD through their provider line. Do you know if there's a specific form for requesting an expedited review due to financial hardship?

I spent HOURS trying to get through to EDD when my claim got stuck in review last year. It was a NIGHTMARE. Left messages, sent emails through the portal, tried calling - nothing worked. Total bureaucratic mess. They don't care that people have bills to pay! My claim was held up for 7 weeks before they finally started paying again. And they never explained why!!

This is exactly why I used Claimyr when my disability claim got stuck in processing. I was in the same boat - couldn't get through on the phone for weeks, messages in the portal went unanswered. Claimyr got me connected to an actual EDD representative in about 27 minutes (after I'd spent days trying on my own). They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. Worth checking out their website at claimyr.com if you're desperate to talk to someone at EDD. They basically navigate the phone system for you and call you back when they have an agent on the line.

I've never heard of this service before. Does it actually work? I'm getting pretty desperate since we're coming up on a month without payment.

To answer your earlier question - yes, I did eventually get backpay for all the weeks during their review period. They didn't contact me for additional information, but they did contact my doctor for clarification about the nature of my disability and treatment plan. You might want to give your doctor a heads-up that EDD might be trying to reach them. Sometimes that's what causes the delay - they're waiting on the medical provider to respond to their inquiry.

That's really helpful to know - thank you! I'll call her doctor's office tomorrow and make sure they're watching for any requests from EDD. Hopefully that might speed things up.

I went through this last year and discovered something important: when a doctor marks 'permanent disability,' it actually triggers a review to determine if you should be switched to a different program called Long Term Disability (LTD). This is completely different from SDI. The important thing to know is that SDI has a maximum benefit period of 52 weeks, while permanent disabilities are meant to be covered by either private LTD insurance (if you have it through your employer) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). You need to call and speak with someone at EDD to find out: 1. How many weeks of SDI benefits your wife has already used 2. Whether they're reviewing her for continued SDI or for transition to another program 3. If they need any additional documentation Don't rely on messages in the portal - this situation requires speaking to someone directly.

This makes a lot of sense. She's been on SDI for about 4 months now, so we're nowhere near the 52-week limit. I didn't realize the permanent disability checkbox would trigger a different review process. I'll keep trying to get through on the phone.

I've tried at opening time, but I'll keep at it. Maybe I need to start calling at 7:55am to get in the queue right when they open.

@User3 - Regarding that Claimyr service that someone mentioned, I was skeptical at first but ended up using it when I was desperate to reach EDD about my claim extension. It worked surprisingly well. Saved me hours of frustration with busy signals and disconnections. Just sharing my experience since I know how frustrating the EDD phone system can be when you're dealing with a time-sensitive issue like delayed payments.

Thanks for the feedback. I might give it a try if I can't get through in the next couple of days. At this point, I'd try almost anything to get this resolved!

For the expedited review request, there isn't a specific form. You need to speak to a representative and explain your financial hardship situation. Document everything - upcoming bills, past due notices, etc. Also, make sure your wife's doctor has been precise about her condition and limitations. Sometimes the delay is because the medical information is too vague, and EDD needs more specific details about the nature of the permanent disability. They're evaluating whether she can perform any type of work, not just her previous job.

UPDATE: Finally got through to EDD this morning! You were all right - the permanent disability checkbox triggered a special review. The representative said they needed additional information from her doctor about potential work restrictions and accommodations. They're sending a supplemental form to her doctor today. The rep also expedited the claim due to financial hardship and said once they receive the doctor's response, they should process the payments within 3-5 business days, including backpay for the missed weeks. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!
