EDD Appeal Form confusion: which date to enter for disagreement with determination?
I'm so stressed out filling out this EDD appeal form! There's a section that says "I disagree with the determination and the notice dated ___________" and I don't know which date to put. My husband is convinced I should write the "date mailed" from the determination letter, but I think I'm supposed to put today's date (when I'm filling out the form). The determination letter has both a "date mailed" and a "benefit year begin date" on it. Does anyone know for sure which date goes in that blank? I don't want my appeal to get rejected over something this simple, but my benefits were denied and I really need them. Thanks!

You should definitely put the "date mailed" from your determination letter. That's the official date of the determination you're appealing. The form is asking when the determination you're disagreeing with was issued, not when you're filling out the appeal form. The benefit year begin date is just when your claim period started and isn't relevant for this particular field.

•Thank you SO much! My husband will be happy to hear he was right lol. Do you know if there's a specific deadline for submitting the appeal after receiving the determination letter?

ur supposed to put the date on the actual NOTICE ur appealing. like when they sent it to you. the benefit year is something totally different thats just when ur claim started

I went through this exact same confusion last year when appealing my SDI denial. You need to use the "date mailed" from your Notice of Determination. This is critical because you only have 30 days from that date to file your appeal. The benefit year begin date is completely unrelated to this part of the form - it just indicates when your benefit period started. Make sure you also include a copy of the determination letter with your appeal submission. And keep copies of EVERYTHING you send them. I learned the hard way that EDD can sometimes claim they never received documents.

•Oh wow, I didn't realize there was a 30-day deadline! My letter was dated March 15, 2025, so I need to get this in ASAP. Thanks for mentioning to keep copies - I wouldn't have thought of that.

Listen, these EDD forms are DESIGNED to be confusing!!! They want people to mess up so they can deny more claims. I put the wrong date on mine and they rejected my whole appeal without even looking at it. Had to start the ENTIRE process over again. The system is rigged against regular people who don't have lawyers to help them!!

Has anyone managed to actually talk to a human at EDD about appeal questions? I've been trying to call for days about my own appeal and can't get through!

•I had the same problem trying to reach EDD about my appeal last month. Finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an actual EDD representative in about 20 minutes instead of spending days calling. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ?si=1hcSq3KFtCr4oAmd. The rep I spoke with was super helpful and cleared up all my questions about the appeal form, including the date issue the original poster mentioned.

Quick follow-up since I see you're approaching your deadline - as others mentioned, you need to use the mailed date. But also make sure you're thoroughly explaining WHY you disagree with their determination. Be specific about why you believe you qualify for benefits. Include any supporting medical documentation if this is about SDI or provide employment details if it's UI-related. The ALJ (Administrative Law Judge) who reviews your appeal will be looking for concrete reasons to overturn the denial. I've helped several friends with successful appeals, and specificity really matters.

•Thank you so much for this advice! I've been focused on getting the form filled out correctly but haven't put much thought into how detailed my explanation should be. I'll definitely include my medical records and a more specific explanation. You've been so helpful!

Just wanted to add my experience - I successfully appealed my SDI denial last fall and the date issue definitely tripped me up at first too! Like everyone else confirmed, you absolutely need the "date mailed" from your determination notice. But here's something that might help: when you submit your appeal, consider sending it certified mail so you have proof of delivery. EDD has to receive it within 30 days of that mailed date, not just postmarked. I almost missed my deadline because I assumed regular mail would be fine. Also, if you're close to the deadline like you are, you can actually submit the appeal online through EDD's website which gives you immediate confirmation. Good luck with your appeal - the process is stressful but don't give up!

•This is really helpful advice about the certified mail and online submission options! I didn't know you could submit appeals through their website - that sounds much safer than regular mail especially when you're cutting it close to the deadline. Thanks for sharing your successful appeal experience, it gives me hope that this will work out. I'm definitely going to look into the online option since I'm already stressed about timing.
