EDD appeal mailing address needed - can't get through on phone
I received a disqualification notice last week for supposedly not being available for work, which is completely false! I was working part-time and reporting all my hours correctly. Now I need to file an appeal but the letter doesn't clearly state where to send it. I've been trying to call EDD for 3 days straight (literally 20+ calls each day) but keep getting the 'we're experiencing high call volume' message and disconnected. Their website is so confusing and I can't find a specific mailing address for appeals. Does anyone know the correct address to send my appeal to? The deadline is in 9 days and I'm getting really stressed about missing it!

The appeal mailing address depends on which office sent your disqualification notice. Look at the top of your notice letter - there should be an office code or name (like 'Sacramento Adjudication Center' or similar). The return address on the letter is usually where you need to send your appeal. Make sure to use the Appeal Form DE 1000M - you can download it from the EDD website. Don't forget to include your claim ID number and a copy of the disqualification notice!

•Thanks! The letter is from the "Anaheim UI Center" but the return address just says "Employment Development Department" with a PO Box. Should I use that PO Box? And do I absolutely need the DE 1000M form or can I just write a letter explaining why I disagree?

•That's a relief to hear! Did you use the official appeal form or just write a letter? Also, did you receive any confirmation that they got your appeal?

EDD IS THE WORST!!! I sent my appeal to the address on my letter and they claimed they never got it. Had to send AGAIN with tracking. ALWAYS use certified mail with these people!!! They'll claim they never received it just to deny you benefits!!!

•While I understand your frustration, I've worked with many clients on appeals, and most lost mail issues are due to the sheer volume they process rather than intentional mishandling. But I agree 100% that certified mail is absolutely essential for anything you send to EDD. Always keep proof of everything when dealing with unemployment matters.

EDD Appeals Office addresses vary by region, but here's what you need to know: 1. Use the PO Box on your disqualification notice 2. Fill out form DE 1000M (not strictly required but highly recommended) 3. Include your claim ID, SSN (last 4 digits only is safest), and copy of disqualification notice 4. Send via certified mail with tracking 5. Keep copies of EVERYTHING If your appeal deadline is only 9 days away, you can also fax your appeal to the number on your notice. Faxing counts as submission and creates a timestamp. If you're still trying to reach a live person at EDD, I'd recommend trying Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a service that helps you get through to an EDD representative much faster than trying on your own. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/JmuwXR7HA10?si=TSwYbu_GOwYzt9km. Many people in this forum have had success with it when dealing with time-sensitive issues like appeals.

•Thank you SO much for this detailed info! I'll definitely use the DE 1000M form and send it certified mail. I hadn't thought about faxing it - that's a great backup plan. I'll check out that Claimyr service too since I really need to talk to someone about this. Do you know if I should continue certifying while waiting for the appeal?

My situation was different (fired vs quit dispute), but when I appealed last month, I found out you can actually submit appeals online through UI Online now! Go to your homepage, look for the Appeal option in the menu. You can upload documents there too. Much faster than mail.

•This is partially correct, but not all types of appeals can be submitted online yet. Disqualifications specifically related to availability for work (like the OP's situation) still require paper submission in many cases. The online appeal option works great for misconduct and voluntary quit issues though!

Update: I just checked UI Online and there is an appeal option there! It lets me select the disqualification notice I want to appeal. Has anyone used the online appeal process? Is it better than mailing?

•Online appeals are excellent because they provide immediate confirmation and create an electronic record in your account. However, I still recommend uploading all supporting documentation and keeping screenshots of your confirmation page. And yes, absolutely continue certifying for benefits while your appeal is pending - if you win your appeal, you'll only receive payment for weeks you properly certified for.

I used that claimyr service someone mentioned above when I had appeal questions last year... got through to EDD in like 25 mins after trying for days on my own. The guy I talked to was actually super helpful and walked me through everything. Just sharing since your deadline is coming up fast.

•Thanks for sharing your experience! I think I might try that tomorrow. Did they help you understand what documents you needed to include with your appeal?

My sister had almost the exact same situation happen. She sent her appeal letter to the wrong address and almost missed the deadline. Whatever you do, don't just use the general EDD address in Sacramento! Make sure it's going to the specific appeals office that handles your region. The online option sounds like your best bet if it's available for your specific type of appeal.

•Thank you for the warning! I definitely don't want to send it to the wrong place and miss my deadline. I'm going to try the online appeal option first and if that doesn't work for my situation, I'll send it certified mail to the exact PO Box on my disqualification notice.

Just wanted to follow up on my earlier advice - the online appeal option is definitely the way to go if it's available for your case type. It's faster and creates an immediate record. If you go that route, make sure to: 1. Write a clear, concise explanation of why you believe the decision is incorrect 2. Upload any evidence that shows you were available for work (job applications, work search records, etc.) 3. Take screenshots of the confirmation page 4. Continue certifying for benefits weekly while waiting for your appeal Best of luck with your appeal!
