Can I use old SDI claim for new intermittent LOA or do I have to file again?

Hey everyone, I'm trying to figure out if I can use my previous disability claim for a new intermittent leave of absence. Do I have to file a whole new claim or can I somehow use the old one? I'm not sure how to proceed and could use some advice on what to do when I call about this. Any tips on what documents I should have ready or questions I should ask?

Unfortunately, you'll probably need to file a new claim for intermittent leave. Each period of disability is usually treated separately. Here's what I'd suggest: 1. Gather all your medical records related to this condition 2. Have your employment details ready (dates, job description, etc.) 3. When you call, ask about: - Specific eligibility criteria for intermittent leave - How your previous claim might affect this new application - Any time limits or deadlines you need to be aware of Be prepared to clearly explain your situation and why you need intermittent leave. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the detailed response! This is really helpful. Do you know if there's a specific form I need to fill out for intermittent leave?

You're welcome! The exact form can vary depending on your state and employer. Generally, you'll need to fill out a new disability claim form, but specify it's for intermittent leave. Your HR department should be able to provide the correct form.

Just to add - make sure you get a doctor's note specifically stating you need intermittent leave. That was a hang-up for me when I applied.

ugh, the whole system is so confusing. why cant they just make it easier for ppl who are already dealing with health issues??? 🤦‍♂️

Preach! 🙌 It's like they want us to give up or something

ikr? its almost like they dont want us to get the benefits we deserve 🙄

I've been through this before. Definitely file a new claim. Make sure you have all your ducks in a row before calling - it can make a huge difference. And don't be afraid to ask for clarification if you don't understand something!

Quick question - how long ago was your last disability claim? Sometimes if it's within a certain timeframe, you might be able to reopen it instead of filing a completely new one.

It was about 8 months ago. Do you think that's too long?

Ah, yeah that's probably too long. Most states have a limit of like 30 or 60 days for reopening. Looks like you'll need to file a new one, sorry bout that!

Hey guys, I found a method to get someone on the phone quickly. I used this site's (claimyr.com) calling tool that dials the phone menu, stays on hold, waits for a live agent to pick up, then sends the call to my phone. It does cost $20, but it works. Here's a video about it: https://youtu.be/1X-mEsLtbmQ

Sounds too good to be true. Is this legit?

Yeah, it's totally legit. I was skeptical at first too, but it saved me hours of hold time. Worth every penny imo.

How long did it take for them to call you back?

It took about 2 hours for me, but I've heard it can vary. Still way better than being stuck on hold yourself!

Anyone else feel like they're playing disability claim bingo? 🎰 I swear, every time I call it's a new rule or requirement 😅

LOL for real tho 🤣 I'm convinced they just make this stuff up as they go along

Disability Claim Bingo sounds like the world's most depressing game show 😂

Hey Sofia! I went through something similar last year. You'll definitely need to file a new claim for intermittent leave - they don't let you reuse old ones unfortunately. A few things that really helped me: - Get your doctor to be super specific about WHY you need intermittent leave (not just that you have a condition) - Have exact dates ready for when you think you'll need time off - Ask about the "episodic" vs "chronic" distinction - it matters for how they process your claim Also, be prepared for them to ask A LOT of questions about your work duties and how your condition specifically prevents you from doing them. The more detailed you can be, the better. Good luck! 🤞
