CalWORKs EBT cards for kids - do they reload existing card or issue new one yearly?

My son got his first CalWORKs cash aid payment loaded onto an EBT card last April when I first applied. His annual redetermination is coming up next month and I was wondering if they reload the same card he got last year or if they issue a completely new card each year? I can't find his original card anywhere in the house and I'm worried that if they just reload the same one, he'll miss this year's benefits. Has anyone gone through the yearly renewal process with their kids' cards? Should I request a replacement now or wait until after redetermination?

They don't issue new cards every year - they reload the same EBT card. CalWORKs cards don't expire for several years (I think it's like 3-4 years from when they're first issued). If you can't find his card, you should definitely request a replacement ASAP! Call the EBT customer service number on the back of your own card (or 877-328-9677) to report it lost and request a new one. They'll cancel the old card and mail a new one, usually takes about 7-10 days to arrive.

Thank you! I'll call today to get a replacement. Will his benefits still load on time even if the new card hasn't arrived yet by our redetermination date?

Yes, the benefits will be available in his account on the normal payment date regardless of whether you have the physical card in hand yet. The card is just the way to access the money, but the funds are loaded into his account on schedule. When the new card arrives, you'll have access to any benefits that were added while you were waiting for the replacement.

I had the exact same situation with my daughter's card last year! Spent hours tearing the house apart looking for it before her redetermination. The county worker told me they ALWAYS reload the same card unless you specifically request a new one. When I called the EBT customer service line, I was on hold for almost 2 hours before getting disconnected. I tried again the next day and same thing happened. I was about to lose my mind when another mom at my daughter's school told me about Claimyr. You can check it out at claimyr.com - they basically call EBT for you and have them call you back instead of waiting on hold forever. There's a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE Worked perfectly and I had a replacement card within a week! The new card came with a different number but accessed the same account.

Thank you! Those EBT hold times are ridiculous, especially when you're trying to call during work hours. I'll definitely check out that service if I have trouble getting through today.

they dont give new ones each year thats wasteful lol. jus get replacement if u lost it but make sure u do it BEFORE ur redetermination so they dont think ur tryin to scam them

One important thing to note: If you request a replacement card, make sure you destroy the old one if you end up finding it later. Once you report a card lost/stolen and request a replacement, the old card is deactivated for security reasons and cannot be reactivated. I've seen people find their old card after getting a replacement and try to use it, only to have their account temporarily frozen because the system flags it as potential fraud. And yes, as others have mentioned, CalWORKs Cash Aid uses the same EBT card year after year until its expiration date (which should be printed on the front of the card). The 48-month time limit for CalWORKs doesn't affect the card itself - only your eligibility for benefits.

That's really good to know! I'll definitely destroy the old one if it turns up. I wasn't even thinking about the fraud flags.

My son has had the same card for 3 yrs now and they just reload it each month. BUT when we moved counties, they issued a new card for some reason? I was confused about that. Anyone else have to get new cards when moving between counties in CA?

Yes, moving between counties typically triggers a new card issuance because your case is transferred to the new county's system. Each county in California administers CalWORKs somewhat independently (though under the same state rules), and they often need to close your case in the old county and open a new one in the new county. This is why people sometimes experience benefit delays when moving between counties.
