New EBT 4.0 card not reloaded with CalFresh benefits - how long to wait?

Just got my new EBT 4.0 card in the mail last week. I activated it immediately but my monthly CalFresh benefits ($425) haven't been loaded yet. It's been 5 days now and I'm starting to worry. My old card expired and they automatically sent this new one, but I thought the benefits would transfer right away? Anyone else deal with this? How long did you have to wait for your new card to get loaded with your benefits? I have 2 kids and we're running low on groceries so I'm getting nervous.

mine took like 3 days to reload but my friend had to wait almost 2 weeks!! so frustrating

2 weeks?! Seriously? That's way too long. Did your friend have to call someone or did it just randomly show up?

This happened to me in February. The 4.0 cards are supposed to have your benefits transfer automatically upon activation, but there's often a delay. If you're past day 3, you should definitely call your county office. Make sure you're checking your balance through the official EBT app or phone line (not the old methods). Sometimes the benefits are there but not showing up on the old balance check systems.

Thanks, I've been checking through the app. I'll call tomorrow morning. Do you know if they can expedite it since we're almost out of food?

You need to call your county office ASAP. The 4.0 cards have been having synchronization issues in several counties. When you activated, did you get a confirmation number or just the general "Your card has been activated" message? They should be able to manually transfer the benefits, especially if your certification period is current. Bring up that you have children in the household if they try to make you wait - they have 3-day emergency protocols for households with children.

I just got the general message, no confirmation number. I'll definitely mention my kids when I call. Thanks for the info about the 3-day emergency protocol, I didn't know about that!

same here the whole system is trash. took me calling everyday for a week to get my benefits loaded. they kept saying 'its processing' whatever that means

Have you submitted your SAR7 recently? If you were due for the Semi-Annual Report and didn't submit it, they may have put a hold on your benefits even with the new card. That happened to me and I had to submit my SAR7 before they would release the funds to my new card. Just something to check!

I submitted my SAR7 back in February and got confirmation that it was processed. My next one isn't due until August, so I don't think that's the issue. But thanks for mentioning it!

If you're having trouble getting through to the county office (which is pretty common), I'd recommend using Claimyr. I was in the exact same situation with my 4.0 card last month and spent DAYS trying to reach someone. With Claimyr, they got me connected to a live person at the county office in about 15 minutes. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 and their website is claimyr.com. The worker was able to manually transfer my benefits to the new card while I was on the phone with them.

I haven't heard of that service before. Does it really work? I've been calling the county CalFresh line and just get stuck in that automated system forever.

Yeah, it absolutely works. The typical issue with county offices is their phone systems are overwhelmed. Claimyr basically does the waiting for you and calls you back when they've got a real person on the line. Saved me hours of frustration, especially with this exact 4.0 card issue.

my neighbor had this problem too!! she had to go IN PERSON to the county office bcuz they kept saying on the phone that it was a 'technical issue' and needed 'supervisor override' or something. might be faster than waiting on phone

Ugh, I really hope I don't have to go in person. I work during their office hours and taking time off is really tough with my boss. But if calling doesn't work tomorrow I might have to.

Update us on what happens! The EBT 4.0 rollout has been a mess in many counties. One important thing to know: if they do have to issue emergency benefits because of their error, make sure they give you the full month's amount. Some workers try to prorate it based on the days left in the month, but if it's their system error, you're entitled to the full month's benefits retroactive to your normal issuance date.

That's really good to know, thank you! I'll definitely ask for the full month's benefits since this wasn't my error. Will update tomorrow after I call.

UPDATE: Finally got this resolved! I called this morning using the Claimyr service someone recommended, and it actually worked - got through to a real person in about 20 minutes. The worker said there was a 'card synchronization error' that affected several people who got new 4.0 cards. She had to get supervisor approval, but they were able to transfer my full benefits while I was on the phone. Just checked my balance and it's all there! For anyone else having this issue, definitely call and specifically mention it's a '4.0 card synchronization error' - apparently that helps them know exactly what to do.

Great news! Glad you got it resolved and thanks for sharing the specific terminology. That'll help others who run into the same issue. The 'card synchronization error' is exactly what happened during the initial 4.0 rollout in my county too.

So happy you got your benefits! I'm dealing with the same issue right now - got my new 4.0 card 4 days ago and still waiting. Definitely going to try that Claimyr service and use the exact phrase "card synchronization error" when I call. Thanks for sharing the solution!
