How long for replacement EBT card to arrive after canceling old one?
My EBT card got damaged last week so I called the customer service number to report it and cancel it. They said they're sending a new card but it's been a week already and nothing's shown up in my mailbox. I'm getting really worried because I have about $345 in CalFresh benefits that I need to access ASAP for my kids' groceries. Does anyone know how long it typically takes for a replacement EBT card to arrive in 2025? The rep didn't give me any tracking info or estimate. I've been borrowing money from my sister to feed my family but I can't keep doing that. Should I call again or just keep waiting?

Replacement EBT cards are supposed to arrive within 5-7 business days (not counting weekends or holidays). Since it's been about a week, you should definitely call the EBT customer service again. Sometimes cards get lost in the mail or there might have been an error in your address. When you call, ask them to confirm the mailing address they have on file for you and ask if they can see if the card was actually sent out. If needed, they can expedite a new one.

•Thank you! I'll call them back today. Do you know if they can tell me over the phone if it was actually mailed or not? I'm worried maybe the first rep I talked to didn't actually process the request correctly.

•Oh no, that's awful! Did they give you any explanation for why it took so long? I really can't wait two weeks...

Former EBT processor here. The standard timeframe is 5-7 business days, but current USPS delays in some areas are causing longer waits. A few things to know: 1. The EBT customer service reps can see when your card was actually processed and mailed out 2. If it's been 7 business days, you can request they cancel that card and expedite a new one 3. Your benefits are still safe in your account even if you don't have the physical card 4. Some counties offer emergency card pickup at the local office if you're in a dire situation Call the EBT customer service number on the back of your old card (if you still have it) or 1-877-328-9677 and explain it's been over a week. Ask them to verify when the card was actually sent out.

I went through this nightmare last year. Called and called and could never get through to a real person. The automated system just kept telling me my card was "in process" whatever that means. After TWO WEEKS with no card I was beyond frustrated. Finally I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me through to an actual human at the CalFresh office in minutes instead of being stuck on hold forever. They were able to tell me my card had been returned to them due to a typo in my address! Check out their demo video if you're struggling to reach someone: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 Once I finally talked to a real person, they fixed my address and I had my new card in 3 days.

•Wow, I've never heard of that service before. I'll check it out if I can't get through today. Thanks for the suggestion! I'm definitely worried there might be some issue with my address since I moved to a new apartment in the same building last month.

iM pRETTY SURE replacement cards r REQUIRED to be sent within 3 days according to state regs!!! they are breaking the LAW making u wait longer than that!!! my cousin works for the county and she told me this. YOU SHOULD FILE A COMPLAINT!!

•That's not quite accurate. The county has to *process* the replacement request within 3 business days, but then standard mailing times apply. The actual delivery timeline is 5-7 business days from when the request is processed, according to the California Department of Social Services regulations. Filing a complaint too early might not be helpful, but if it goes beyond 7-10 business days, then yes, requesting escalation is appropriate.

Have you checked with your local post office? When I was waiting for my EBT card last year, it turned out it was sitting at the post office because they couldn't deliver it - something about requiring a signature (which isn't supposed to happen with EBT cards). Might be worth checking if they're holding it for some reason.

•I didn't think of that! I'll stop by the post office tomorrow if I can't get it resolved with the EBT customer service today. Thanks for the suggestion.

UPDATE: Thanks everyone for the advice! I called the EBT customer service line and after 45 minutes on hold, finally got through. Turns out they had my apartment number wrong (I'm in 304 but they had 340). They're sending a new card with the correct address and said I should have it within 5-7 business days. The rep also mentioned that if I don't receive it by next Friday, I can go to my county office for an emergency card. Really appreciate all your help!

•Great news! Make sure when you get the new card to immediately call and activate it, and change the PIN right away for security. Also, this is a good reminder for everyone to make sure your address is updated with both CalFresh AND the EBT card system, as they don't always automatically sync with each other.

So glad you got it sorted out! Address issues are super common with EBT cards - happened to my mom too when she moved apartments in the same complex. For anyone else reading this thread, it's worth calling to verify your address is correct BEFORE you need a replacement card. Also, if you're ever in a real emergency situation and can't wait for the mail, some food banks can help bridge the gap while you're waiting for your new card to arrive. The address mix-up explains why it was taking so long - your card was probably being delivered to the wrong apartment this whole time!

•This is such a helpful thread! I'm new to CalFresh and had no idea about the address sync issues between CalFresh and the EBT card system. Really good to know about food banks as an emergency backup too. @Andre Dupont glad everything worked out for you - that apartment number mixup must have been so frustrating when you re'trying to feed your kids!

This is such a helpful thread! I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - my EBT card stopped working yesterday and I'm not sure if it's damaged or if there's another issue. After reading through everyone's experiences, I'm definitely going to call the customer service line first thing tomorrow and make sure to verify my address is correct. It's really reassuring to know that the benefits stay safe in your account even without the physical card. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and advice - this community is so supportive!

•Welcome to the community @Isaiah Thompson! I'm also pretty new here but this thread has been incredibly helpful. Definitely call that customer service line - based on everyone's experiences here, it seems like the reps can run diagnostics on your card to tell you exactly what's wrong. Could be damaged, expired, or just a system glitch. And yes, knowing the benefits are safe in the account is such a relief! Good luck getting it sorted out tomorrow.

Just wanted to add another tip for anyone dealing with EBT card issues - if your card is physically damaged but still partially readable, sometimes you can still use it at certain machines even if it doesn't work at others. I had a cracked card last year that wouldn't work at grocery store card readers but still worked at some ATMs to check my balance. Obviously you should still request a replacement right away, but it might help in a pinch while you're waiting for the new one to arrive. Also, keep the customer service number (1-877-328-9677) saved in your phone so you don't have to scramble looking for it when you need it!

•That's a really smart tip about trying different card readers! I never would have thought of that. Saving the customer service number is brilliant too - I can't tell you how many times I've been in situations where I needed important phone numbers and couldn't find them. Thanks for sharing that practical advice @Isabella Ferreira! This whole thread has been like a masterclass in navigating EBT card issues.

Reading through this thread as someone who's had to deal with EBT card replacements multiple times, I want to emphasize how important it is to stay persistent with the customer service calls. I've noticed that different reps sometimes give different information or have access to different tools to help resolve issues. If the first person you talk to can't give you specific details about when your card was mailed or can't expedite a replacement, don't hesitate to politely ask to speak with a supervisor or call back to try a different rep. Also, for anyone in the Bay Area - I've found that the Oakland CalFresh office is particularly good about emergency card pickups if you're really in a bind. Just make sure to bring your ID and any documentation showing your current address. The most important thing is not to panic - your benefits are secure and there's always a solution, even if it takes a few extra steps to get there.

•This is such valuable advice @Dmitry Popov! I'm relatively new to navigating the CalFresh system and had no idea that different reps might have different capabilities or that asking for a supervisor could make a difference. The persistence tip is really important - it's easy to get discouraged after one phone call doesn't go well, but it sounds like it's worth trying again. Thanks for mentioning the Oakland office too - I'm in the East Bay so that's good to know for future reference. This whole conversation has been incredibly educational for someone like me who's still learning how everything works!

This thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm new to the CalFresh program and just got my first EBT card last month, so I had no idea what to expect if something like this happened. Reading everyone's experiences and solutions gives me so much peace of mind knowing there are multiple ways to resolve card issues and that the benefits stay safe in your account. I'm definitely saving that customer service number in my phone right now and making a note to double-check my address is correct in both systems. Thanks to everyone who shared their stories and advice - this community is amazing for helping newcomers like me understand how everything works!

•Welcome to CalFresh and to this community @Kaitlyn Jenkins! I'm also fairly new to the program (got my card about 3 months ago) and this thread has been like a crash course in EBT troubleshooting. It's so reassuring to know there are experienced folks here willing to share their knowledge. One thing I learned from this discussion that I wish I'd known earlier is about the address sync issues between CalFresh and the EBT card system - definitely worth checking on that even if you haven't had any problems yet. This community really is fantastic for helping us navigate all the ins and outs of the system!

This thread has been so educational! I'm also pretty new to CalFresh (just got approved last month) and had no idea about all these potential issues with replacement cards. The address sync problem between CalFresh and the EBT system seems to be a really common issue that nobody warns you about upfront. I'm definitely going to call and verify my address is correct in both systems before I ever need a replacement. It's also really helpful to know about the emergency pickup option at county offices - I had no idea that was even possible! Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences, especially @Andre Dupont for the update letting us know it all worked out. This community is such a great resource for navigating all the complexities of the system.

•Welcome to the community @Justin Evans! I'm also pretty new here (just joined a few weeks ago) and this thread has been incredibly informative. It's amazing how many little details about the EBT system you only learn through experiences like these. The address verification tip is really smart - I'm going to do the same thing proactively. It seems like such a simple thing that could save a lot of headache later. I had no idea about the emergency pickup option either until reading this thread. Really grateful for communities like this where people share real experiences and practical solutions!

As someone who's been on CalFresh for about 6 months now, I really appreciate this detailed discussion! I haven't had to deal with a replacement card yet, but reading through everyone's experiences has given me a great roadmap for what to do if it happens. The most valuable takeaway for me is definitely the importance of verifying your address is correct in BOTH the CalFresh system AND the EBT card system - I had no idea these were separate! I'm going to call tomorrow just to double-check mine are synced up correctly. Also bookmarking that Claimyr service @Liam Fitzgerald mentioned in case I ever need to get through to a human quickly. Thanks to everyone for sharing such practical advice - this is exactly the kind of community support that makes navigating government programs so much easier!
