Canceled my EBT 3.0 card that was 'lost' but it arrived today - what now for CalFresh benefits?

Ugh I'm so confused about what to do with my CalFresh benefits now! My EBT card wasn't showing up for weeks so I finally called the customer service line yesterday. The rep told me my EBT 3.0 card was supposedly mailed out on November 7th (almost 3 weeks ago!). Since it never arrived, I went ahead and canceled it and requested a new one. Well guess what? I just checked my mailbox TODAY and found the original card that was sent in November! I'm panicking because I have $437 in benefits that I really need for groceries. Does anyone know: 1) Will the canceled card still work since I have it now? 2) How long will the replacement take to arrive? 3) Can I somehow un-cancel the first card? I've got two kids to feed and can't wait another 3 weeks!

Once a card is canceled, it's deactivated in the system and won't work even if you physically have it. The replacement card typically takes 7-10 business days to arrive. Unfortunately, there's no way to 'un-cancel' a card once it's been reported - it's a security feature of the EBT system. Your benefits themselves are still safe in your account though! They'll be available once your new card arrives. If you're in an emergency situation, you could try calling the EBT customer service again and asking if they can expedite the replacement. Some counties offer emergency card pickup at the local office.

Thanks for the fast reply. I'm really worried now. Do you know if I can go to the county office in person to get a card faster? I called the EBT number again but got stuck in the automated system for 45 minutes before giving up.

this happened to me last month lol! the canceled card definitely WONT work, i tried swiping mine at the store and got declined. the new one came in about a week for me. btw your benefits are still there just waiting for your new card dont worry

Actually depends on your county! I work at a community resource center, and some counties offer same-day emergency card pickup if you're in a genuine hardship situation. You need to contact your specific county CalFresh office directly though, not the EBT customer service line. Explain that you have kids and need access to your benefits immediately. They might be able to help faster, especially with the holidays coming up.

If u really need food right now while waiting for new card, try calling 211 they can tell u about food banks near u. My church also does emergency food boxes for families no questions asked. The system is so frustrating!!! When my card got stolen last year I had to wait 12 days for new one even tho they said 5-7 business days. And yes ur old card is completely dead now even tho u have it.

I was in the same boat last summer - so frustrating! Have you tried using Claimyr to reach your county worker? I spent HOURS trying to get through the regular CalFresh phone line with no luck. Then someone told me about claimyr.com and they got me through to a real person in like 10 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. My worker was able to arrange for me to pick up an emergency card that same day at the office. Worth a try if you're desperate!

This is making me so anxious. I've got like $20 cash until next week and was counting on using my CalFresh benefits for Thanksgiving groceries. I'll try calling my county office directly tomorrow morning. Really hoping they can help me get emergency access.

Just to clarify some information here - your benefits themselves are still safe and will roll over to your new card. The EBT 3.0 cards are newer and have additional security features, which is why they're being sent out to replace older cards. For expedited service, here's what you can do: 1. Contact your specific county CalFresh office (not just the EBT customer service line) 2. Explain you have children and no access to your benefits 3. Ask specifically about "emergency card issuance" or "over-the-counter card services" Many counties can issue a temporary card same-day if you visit the office in person with proper identification. Bring your ID and your case number if you have it. The temporary card will give you immediate access to your benefits until your permanent replacement arrives.

UPDATE: I just got back from the county office! I took everyone's advice and went in person first thing this morning. Had to wait about an hour but they were able to issue me a temporary card right there! The lady said my permanent replacement will still arrive in the mail in 7-10 days, but this temp card works fine and has access to all my benefits. Thank you all so much for the help - we can have Thanksgiving dinner after all! For anyone else in this situation, definitely go to your county office in person if you can.

That's great news! I'm so glad they were able to help you quickly. The temporary cards usually last about 30 days, so that gives plenty of time for your permanent replacement to arrive. Just remember to activate the new permanent card when it comes in the mail. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family!

So happy to hear you got it sorted out! This is such valuable information for others who might face the same situation. I had no idea counties could issue temporary cards same-day - that's a game changer for families in emergency situations. Thanks for coming back to update us with the solution. Enjoy your Thanksgiving dinner! 🦃

This thread is so helpful! As someone new to CalFresh, I had no idea about the temporary card option either. It's really reassuring to know that if something like this happens, there's actually a same-day solution available. I'm bookmarking this post for future reference. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it really helps newcomers like me understand how the system actually works beyond what they tell you on the phone!

This whole thread is incredibly helpful! I'm relatively new to navigating the CalFresh system and had no idea about so many of these options. The temporary card same-day pickup is amazing information - I wish they made this more widely known instead of just telling people to wait 7-10 days. It's also really helpful to know about resources like 211 and Claimyr for when you can't get through the regular phone lines. @Astrid Bergström so glad you got it resolved and can have a proper Thanksgiving! This community is such a lifesaver for figuring out how things actually work in the real world.

Totally agree! I'm also pretty new to CalFresh and this whole conversation has been eye-opening. It's frustrating that they don't advertise these emergency options upfront - like why wouldn't they tell you about same-day temporary cards when you're reporting a lost card? Seems like basic information people would need to know. I'm definitely saving this thread too. Really shows how much more helpful real community advice is compared to the official phone lines. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences!

This is such a perfect example of why community knowledge is so much more valuable than official channels! I've been on CalFresh for about 6 months now and learned more from this one thread than from all my interactions with customer service combined. The fact that same-day emergency cards are available but not widely advertised is honestly infuriating - how many families have gone hungry waiting for replacements when they could have gotten help immediately? @Astrid Bergström I'm so relieved you got sorted out in time for Thanksgiving! And huge thanks to everyone who shared practical solutions like Claimyr and 211. Saving all of this info because you never know when you'll need it. This is exactly why we need spaces like this where people share real experiences and actual working solutions! 🙏
