Will EBT Summer 2025 P-EBT cards reload for school kids? Getting conflicting info
I'm so confused about whether the new 3.0 P-EBT cards will be reloaded for the upcoming summer for my kids (ages 8 and 12). My neighbor said her caseworker told her they'd automatically reload for all eligible school-aged children who qualify for free/reduced lunch, but when I called the county last week, the automated message said something about one-time issuance only. I've got about $78 left on each card from the school year and was counting on the summer reload to help with groceries when school meals aren't available. Has anyone received official notice about this? The CalFresh office just keeps transferring me around when I call.

My kids' school sent home a flyer last month that said the P-EBT 3.0 cards are NOT going to auto-reload for summer 2025. They said eligible families will receive completely new cards for the summer program if they qualify. The eligibility requirements changed too - now you need to have been on CalFresh at some point between March-May 2025 OR have kids who attended a school with universal free meals. Check if your kids' school participates in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), because that affects whether they'll qualify automatically.

•Thanks for the info! Our school does have universal free breakfast but not lunch. So confusing. Do you know when the new summer cards would arrive if we qualify? Planning my grocery budget is already stressful enough...

•This is why we need official information directly from CDSS rather than relying on secondhand sources. The Department of Social Services website (www.cdss.ca.gov/pebt) should be updated with the official 2025 Summer P-EBT guidelines by early May. Previous years' policies aren't necessarily applicable since the program keeps changing. If your children qualify for free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program, you're generally eligible, but the distribution method (reloading existing cards versus issuing new ones) changes year to year.

I just went through this last week and spent THREE DAYS trying to get through to someone who actually knew the answer. After getting disconnected 6 times, I finally used this service called Claimyr that got me through to a live person at CalFresh in 20 minutes instead of being on hold forever. The worker confirmed that for Summer 2025, they will NOT be reloading existing P-EBT 3.0 cards. They're issuing new Summer P-EBT cards to eligible households. You can see how the service works at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 - it was seriously the only way I could get confirmation instead of being stuck in phone tree hell. The eligibility this time is: 1. Kids who get free/reduced lunch at school 2. Kids at CEP/Provision 2 schools (where everyone gets free meals) 3. Families on CalFresh anytime from March-May 2025 Cards are supposed to arrive in June from what they told me.

•Is that service legit? I've been getting hung up on repeatedly when calling about my CalFresh case. Not just about the P-EBT stuff but also about my regular benefits that got cut for some reason.

I work with the school nutrition program in our district, and I can provide some clarity here. The P-EBT 3.0 program for Summer 2025 will NOT reload existing cards. This is a separate issuance requiring no application for most eligible families. Here's the official breakdown: - Children already receiving CalFresh, CalWORKs, or Medi-Cal are typically automatically eligible - Children at schools with universal free meals (CEP or Provision 2 schools) are automatically eligible - Children approved for free/reduced meals through a household application are eligible New Summer P-EBT cards should be mailed directly to eligible households in June 2025. The benefit amount is expected to be approximately $125 per eligible child for the summer period. This is separate from your regular CalFresh benefits. If your children received P-EBT during the school year, save those cards even after they're empty, as sometimes there are retroactive adjustments. The summer program uses new cards with new case numbers.

•Thank you SO much for this detailed explanation! This is exactly what I needed to know. One more question if you don't mind - do you know if there's a website or number where we can check eligibility status? Or do we just wait and see if cards arrive?

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!! They never tell us anything until the last minute!! I'm a single mom with 3 kids and I literally have to BUDGET MONTHS in advance because their dad pays child support whenever he feels like it. Last year they said the cards would reload then suddenly they mailed new ones that didn't arrive until AUGUST when summer was almost over!!! Then when I called they said "oh we sent them out in batches" WHY NOT TELL US THAT?? They should just put the summer money on our regular EBT cards instead of these stupid special cards that half the stores don't even know how to process!!!!!

•This this this!!! I'm so tired of the lack of communication. My son's card from last year suddenly got an extra $63 added in December with NO explanation. Like thanks I guess but some warning would be nice??

To provide some additional clarity on the P-EBT 3.0 Summer 2025 program: 1. The benefit amount will be $125 per eligible child for the entire summer period 2. New cards will be issued rather than reloading existing school-year P-EBT cards 3. Distribution timeline: Cards will be mailed in batches beginning in mid-June through early July 4. Eligibility verification is automatic through school district data and CalFresh/Medi-Cal databases 5. No application is required for most eligible households If you don't receive a card by July 15th and believe your child should be eligible, you can request a benefit status check through the P-EBT information portal at www.cdss.ca.gov/pebt or by calling the P-EBT Helpline at 877-328-9677 after July 15th. Before that date, representatives won't have access to the summer issuance data. Keep in mind P-EBT is separate from regular CalFresh benefits. If your household income has changed, you might also qualify for ongoing regular CalFresh benefits, which you can apply for at BenefitsCal.com.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! One last question - do we need to have used all the funds on the current P-EBT cards before the new summer ones arrive? Or do those benefits remain available even after new cards are issued?

my cousin works for the school district and she said they're changing the whole program again because of budget cuts... supposedly the summer benefits might be like $75 instead of the full amount from previous years. has anyone else heard this??

•This is incorrect information. The P-EBT Summer 2025 benefit amount was established in the federal funding authorization at $125 per eligible child. This amount is consistent with federal guidelines based on the average cost of summer meals. While benefit amounts have changed between different phases of the program over the years, the Summer 2025 amount has been confirmed at $125 per child. School district employees would not typically have this information before it's publicly announced by CDSS, so I'd recommend relying on official sources rather than word-of-mouth.

Thank you everyone for all this information! It's been so helpful. I'm going to check my kids' school tomorrow to confirm they're on the CEP list and then just plan on getting new cards in June. I'll make sure to budget accordingly and not count on the current cards being reloaded. I really appreciate all the detailed responses - this community is amazing!

•Can you update us with what the school says? My kids go to Jefferson Elementary and I'm not even sure how to check if they're CEP or whatever that means...

•@Caden Nguyen CEP stands for Community Eligibility Provision - it s'when a school has enough low-income students that they just provide free meals to everyone automatically. You can check by calling your school s'main office or looking on their website. They usually have it listed under their nutrition/meal program info. If Jefferson Elementary does CEP, your kids would automatically qualify for Summer P-EBT without needing to fill out any free lunch applications!

As someone who just went through this whole process, I can confirm what others have said - the Summer 2025 P-EBT cards will be NEW cards, not reloads of existing ones. I spent weeks trying to get a straight answer too! Here's what I learned from finally getting through to someone at CDSS: Keep your current P-EBT cards even after they're empty because sometimes they add retroactive adjustments months later (happened to me last year). The summer cards should arrive between mid-June and early July, and you don't need to apply if your kids already qualify for free/reduced lunch or if you're on CalFresh. One tip that helped me - if you need to call about anything CalFresh related, try calling right when they open at 8am. I had much better luck getting through then instead of calling in the afternoon when everyone else is trying to reach them during lunch breaks. Really hoping they improve the communication next year because this guessing game every season is exhausting for families trying to budget!

•Thank you for sharing your experience! The 8am calling tip is really helpful - I've been trying to call during my lunch break and always get stuck on hold forever. I'm definitely going to try calling first thing in the morning next time I need to reach them. It's reassuring to hear confirmation about the new cards vs reloading from someone who actually got through to CDSS. I'll make sure to keep my current cards safe just in case they add any retroactive amounts later. Really appreciate you taking the time to share what you learned!

•This is so helpful! I'm new to the P-EBT program and have been completely lost trying to figure out what's happening with the summer benefits. The 8am calling tip is gold - I work nights so I can actually call right when they open. Quick question though - when you say "retroactive adjustments," what kind of amounts are we talking about? Is it worth keeping track of the card balances or do they just randomly add money sometimes? Also, do you know if there's any way to get notifications when they do add funds, or do you just have to keep checking the balance?

•@Chloe Martin The retroactive adjustments I ve'seen have been anywhere from like $20 to $80 per card - it seems pretty random! Last year my daughter s'card got an extra $45 added in October, and my friend s'kids got $32 each added in December. I think it has to do with updated federal funding or calculation corrections, but they never really explain it clearly. As for notifications, unfortunately no - there s'no text or email alerts when they add money. I just got in the habit of checking the balance on the EBT app every few weeks. You can also call the number on the back of the card to check balance by phone. The Connect EBT app is actually pretty handy for keeping track of multiple cards if you have more than one kid. Definitely keep those cards safe even when they hit zero - you never know when surprise money might show up!
