Will CalFresh EBT cards get additional P-EBT 4.0 reloads in California 2025?
So confused about this P-EBT situation! My sister in Oregon said they're getting another round of P-EBT benefits in 2025 (P-EBT 4.0 I think?). Does anyone know if California will be doing more reloads too? I have 3 kids in elementary school who qualified for the last round in 2024, and those extra funds were a HUGE help for our grocery budget. Haven't received any notices about a new round yet, but maybe I missed something? I checked the BenefitsCal portal yesterday and nothing new shows up. Do we need to apply again or will it just automatically reload if we're still on CalFresh?

I think ur mixing up benefits. P-EBT is a separate program from CalFresh, even tho they both use EBT cards. P-EBT was a special program during covid for school kids who couldnt get school meals. Prety sure its over now cause kids are back in school. CalFresh is the regular food assistance that continues.

•But my sister definitely said P-EBT 4.0 is happening in her state for 2025! Are different states doing different things? I know covid is "over" but I thought they were still helping families with school-aged kids.

I work for a community resource center that partners with CalFresh outreach. As of right now, California has NOT announced any P-EBT 4.0 reloads for 2025. The P-EBT program was primarily a pandemic response, and each state has different timelines and approaches for phasing out these emergency benefits. Oregon might be handling their program differently, but I haven't seen any official announcements for California continuing P-EBT benefits into 2025. What I CAN tell you is that if your children receive free or reduced-price school meals, you should focus on maintaining that eligibility, as any future P-EBT benefits (if they happen) would likely be tied to that status. Also, make sure your address is current with your children's schools and in the BenefitsCal system.

I had the same question last month! I called the CalFresh customer service line and waited for HOURS just to be told they "don't have information about P-EBT" and that I needed to call a different number. When I called that number, it was just recordings and no real person. So frustrating when you're just trying to plan your family budget. I've been using Claimyr to get through to actual CalFresh workers when I need to talk to someone. You can check them out at claimyr.com - they have this system that calls and waits on hold for you, then calls your phone when a real person picks up. Saved me from wasting hours on hold. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 The worker I finally talked to said P-EBT is separate from CalFresh and handled by a different department, but they weren't aware of any new rounds coming for California. They suggested checking the CDSS website for updates.

•Thank you for the suggestion! I'll look into Claimyr - sounds better than being stuck on hold forever. I've been checking the CDSS website but it's so confusing to navigate and the P-EBT info seems outdated.

Let me clarify some things about P-EBT and CalFresh: 1. P-EBT (Pandemic EBT) was specifically created as a temporary program during COVID when schools were closed or operating virtually 2. Each P-EBT phase has required separate federal approval and funding 3. P-EBT 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 covered different time periods during and shortly after the height of the pandemic 4. For California, there has been no official announcement of P-EBT 4.0 for 2025 5. Some states may have received different approvals based on their specific circumstances If you're concerned about food resources, I'd recommend: - Ensure you're receiving the maximum CalFresh benefits you qualify for (did you report all deductions like childcare costs?) - Check if your children's schools offer after-school snack programs - Contact your local food bank for additional resources - Make sure your children are enrolled in free/reduced lunch programs at school The CDSS will announce any new P-EBT benefits via their official channels if they become available.

I just had my CalFresh recertification interview yesterday and specifically asked about this. The eligibility worker told me there are currently NO PLANS for P-EBT 4.0 in California for 2025. She said Oregon might have a different program or could be referring to something else entirely. However, she did mention that California has permanently expanded the Summer EBT program (which is similar to P-EBT but only for summer months when school is out). So if your kids qualify for free/reduced school meals, you should automatically get some extra food benefits during summer 2025. It's about $120 per eligible child for the summer, not as much as the old P-EBT payments but better than nothing. The worker also suggested making sure you're getting all the CalFresh deductions you're entitled to - many people don't report all their housing costs, childcare expenses, or medical expenses (for seniors/disabled) which could increase your regular monthly benefits.

•Thank you! This is really helpful information. I didn't know about the Summer EBT program becoming permanent. $120 per child isn't a ton, but it will definitely help during those summer months. I'll double-check that I've reported all our expenses correctly on our next SAR7.

i got p-ebt for my kids last year and the card still has some money on it. does anyone know if those benefits expire? should i spend it all before a certain date?

•Yes, P-EBT benefits remain active on your card for 274 days (about 9 months) from the date of issuance. After that, any unused benefits will expire and be removed from your card. You should be able to check the issuance dates by calling the number on the back of your P-EBT card. If you have funds that are approaching that 274-day mark, I'd recommend using them soon.

Maybe ur sister is talking bout Summer EBT not P-EBT 4.0?? They sound similar but different programs. Summer EBT is newer and gives money for kids during summer when school lunch isnt available. P-EBT was the covid thing.

•Ohhh that might be it! She did mention something about summer but I thought it was just when the benefits would come. I'll call her and ask for clarification. Thanks for pointing this out!

THE GOVERNMENT KEEPS CUTTING BENEFITS WHILE FOOD PRICES KEEP GOING UP!!!! My CalFresh benefits barely last 2 weeks now and they expect us to survive! They should be INCREASING benefits not taking away P-EBT! I'm a single mom with 3 kids and our CalFresh got reduced by $95/month when the emergency allotments ended. Now no more P-EBT either??? How are families supposed to feed their kids???

•I understand your frustration. The end of the emergency allotments was difficult for many families. While P-EBT was always designed as a temporary program, there are other resources that might help. Have you connected with your local food bank? Many have expanded their services. Also, if your income has decreased or expenses have increased since your last CalFresh calculation, you can report these changes to potentially increase your benefit amount. The Summer EBT program will provide some additional help during school breaks as well.

Has anyone been getting those random texts saying you can get "extra P-EBT benefits" by clicking some link? I got one last week and almost fell for it but realized it's probably a scam. Just warning everyone to be careful - I think scammers know people are hoping for more P-EBT and are taking advantage.

•YES! Those are definitely scams! The California CDSS will NEVER text you links asking for personal information or to "claim extra benefits." All official P-EBT communications come through mail to your address on file with your child's school. Please report these scam texts to the California Department of Social Services or the FTC. Thanks for the warning - these scams are getting more sophisticated.

I'm also confused about this whole situation! My kids are in 2nd and 4th grade and we definitely got P-EBT benefits in 2024 that helped so much. Reading through these comments, it sounds like California isn't doing P-EBT 4.0 but maybe there's still the Summer EBT program? Can someone explain the difference between P-EBT and Summer EBT? I want to make sure I understand what my family might be eligible for going forward. Also, should I be doing anything now to make sure we get the Summer EBT benefits when they come available?

•Hey! I'm new here but have been following this discussion closely since I'm in the same boat with 2 elementary school kids. From what I've gathered from everyone's responses, here's the key difference: P-EBT was the pandemic emergency program that gave families extra food benefits when schools were closed or had disrupted meal service due to COVID. Summer EBT is a separate, ongoing program that provides food benefits specifically during summer months when kids don't have access to school meals. The Summer EBT is permanent now and gives about $120 per eligible child for the summer. To make sure you get Summer EBT, keep your kids enrolled in free/reduced school meals and make sure your address is current with both the school and BenefitsCal. The school should automatically determine eligibility based on your free/reduced meal status. Hope this helps clarify things!

Thanks everyone for all the helpful information! I'm still hoping California will announce something similar to what Oregon is doing, but it sounds like I should focus on what's actually available. I'm going to check with my kids' school to make sure they're still enrolled in the free lunch program and that our address is current. The Summer EBT program sounds like it will be helpful even if it's not as much as the old P-EBT payments. I also want to double-check that I'm reporting all our expenses correctly on our CalFresh application - someone mentioned childcare costs and I'm not sure if I included those properly. Does anyone know if after-school care expenses count as childcare deductions for CalFresh purposes?
