Confused about my kid's CalWORKs EBT cards - $391 loaded on each but when do monthly benefits arrive?
Finally got my sons CalWORKs EBT cards in the mail yesterday (took forEVER!!) They both have $391 on each card which confused me because I thought they'd just share one? I'm new to all this cash aid stuff and trying to budget. Can someone tell me exactly when new money gets loaded each month? Is it always the same day? And will they BOTH get $391 every month or is this just like back pay or something? The worker explained this to me but honestly I was so stressed during that interview I can't remember half of what she said 😫 Thanks for any help!!

the amount depends on ur family size and income but the date is based on the last digit of ur case number. Like mine ends in 3 so I get it on the 3rd of each month. Check ur approval letter it should say the exact amount for ur household monthly benefit. also those are probably 2 separate benefits if they each have a card - one might be CalFresh and the other Cash Aid. $391 sounds like CF for 2 people.

•omg that makes so much sense! I just checked and our case # ends in 1 so I guess we get paid on the 1st? I'll go look for that approval letter again. Didn't realize one could be CalFresh and one Cash Aid! Now that you mention it I think the worker DID explain that and I just forgot 🤦♀️

Hi there! The $391 on each card could be for different programs. CalWORKs (Cash Aid) and CalFresh (food benefits) use the same EBT cards but they're separate programs with separate benefit amounts. If you received two cards with the same name, one might be a duplicate that you don't need. If they have different names (one for you, one for your child), that's unusual since children don't typically get their own EBT cards. For CalWORKs Cash Aid, benefits are deposited once a month according to the last digit of your case number: - Case numbers ending in 1: Benefits available on the 1st - Case numbers ending in 2: Benefits available on the 2nd - And so on through the 10th CalFresh benefits follow a similar schedule but from the 1st through the 10th based on your case number. I'd recommend calling your eligibility worker to clarify which program each card represents and confirm your correct monthly benefit amounts for planning purposes.

•Thank you for explaining this so clearly! I looked at the cards again and they actually have different names (one is mine, one is my oldest son who's 16). Is that normal? I don't understand why he'd get his own card when he's still a minor and I'm the head of household?

The same thing happened to me when I got approved! Turns out one card was for Cash Aid and one was for CalFresh, but they didn't explain it well. If your teenage son got his own card, that's actually normal in some counties if he's 16+. They sometimes issue separate cards for older teens even though you're still the head of household. Just FYI - CalFresh (food stamps) is typically more than Cash Aid for most families, so one of those $391 amounts is probably your food benefits. My benefits load at midnight on the 8th every month because my case number ends in 8. Super consistent - you can literally count on it hitting at 12:01am on your assigned day. Makes budgeting way easier once you know your date!

•Thanks! My son is 16 so that makes sense why he got his own card. I'll check with him if he received any instructions about his card. Glad to hear the deposits are so reliable - that will really help with planning our budget!

have you check benefitscal account? log in there and u can see which program is which amount. My 17 yr old got his own card 2 when we applied but the worker said its ok if I keep it since Im still in charge of the $$ until hes 18. the issue date on the card should also tell u if its new or old benefits. $391 per kid sounds high for cash aid unless u have like zero income

•Great suggestion about checking BenefitsCal! That's the easiest way to see a breakdown of which benefits are which. You can see exactly what programs you're enrolled in and the benefit amounts for each.

Sounds like you're dealing with the same confusing mess I went through last year! If you're trying to get answers from the county directly, good luck - I spent DAYS trying to get through on their phone lines only to get disconnected. So frustrating! I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a real person in about 10 minutes. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE that shows how it works. Saved me so much time when I needed to sort out my kids' benefits confusion. For what it's worth, my teenager also got his own card, and the worker explained that teens 16+ sometimes get their own cards but I still control the account as the parent. One was definitely CalFresh and one was Cash Aid in my case.

•is that service legit? sounds kinda sketchy tbh. did u have to give them ur personal info?

•Yeah it's legit - they don't access your benefits or anything. They just connect your call directly to the county worker and then you talk to the actual county person. I was suspicious too but it worked and saved me from spending all day on hold. The county workers recognize it when you call through them too.

Since no one's addressed this directly yet - it's very unlikely both cards will get $391 EVERY month. That initial amount could be: 1) One card is Cash Aid, one is CalFresh (most likely) 2) Retroactive benefits from your application date 3) A combination of current month + prorated amount from application date Your actual ongoing monthly benefit depends on your family size, income, and county of residence. For a parent with one or two children with minimal income, $391 sounds about right for CalFresh, but Cash Aid would likely be different. Once you sort out which card is which, put a label on them so you don't mix them up! The Cash Aid can be used anywhere, but CalFresh can only be used for food items. Using the wrong card at the wrong place is a common mistake that causes a lot of stress.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation! Labeling the cards is such a smart idea - I'm going to do that right away. I need to be super careful with these benefits because we really depend on them right now.

u need to check the balance on each card separately cause the amounts will be diffrent each month depending on if u reported any income on ur SAR7!!! If u miss reporting income ur benefits will get cut off real fast so DONT FORGET to turn in ur SAR7 every 6 months!!!! i lernded that lesson the hard way lol
