When can I access my CalWORKs Cash Aid funds after approval? Confused about EBT deposit timing
Just got approved for CalWORKs last week (finally!) and my worker said my first payment would be deposited 'on the 1st'. But I'm confused about when I can actually use the money? Do I have to wait until the 1st to access it, or does it sometimes show up early? I have rent due on the 2nd and I'm cutting it super close. Anyone know if the funds are available at midnight or if there's a specific time they post to the EBT card? This is my first time getting Cash Aid and I'm stressing about timing everything right.

The money hits your EBT card on the 1st of the month and u can access it as soon as it posts! usually like midnight or early morning on the 1st. But heads up they don't deposit early, its always ON the day, not before.

•Thanks! Do you know if there's any way to check when exactly it will be deposited? Like is there a specific time it usually hits accounts?

CalWORKs Cash Aid is deposited according to case number for ongoing benefits. For NEW approvals, it depends on when your case was authorized in the system. If your worker just processed your approval, your first payment might be available immediately as a one-time special issuance rather than waiting for the normal schedule. The regular schedule is: - If your case number ends in 1-3: Available on the 1st - Case number ends in 4-6: Available on the 2nd - Case number ends in 7-9: Available on the 3rd - Case number ends in 0: Available on the 4th You can call the EBT customer service line at 877-328-9677 to check your balance and find out when your regular payment date will be. This way you'll know for future months.

•That is WRONG information!!! CalWORKs Cash Aid is NOT staggered by case number like CalFresh is! All Cash Aid goes out on the 1st of the month regardless of case number. Please don't spread misinformation that could really mess someone up who's counting on their money!!!

California issues all ongoing CalWORKs Cash Aid payments on the 1st of the month, regardless of your case number. The staggered schedule only applies to CalFresh benefits, not Cash Aid. For your first payment, if you were approved mid-month, you might receive a prorated amount for the remaining days of the month when you were first approved, followed by your regular full month payment on the 1st. Funds are typically available at midnight on the 1st, but sometimes it can take until early morning (around 2-3am) for the system to fully process. You can check your balance anytime by calling the number on the back of your EBT card or using the EBT mobile app. If your rent is due on the 2nd, you should have no problem accessing your funds in time.

•Thank you! That's super helpful. I downloaded the EBT app but wasn't sure how accurate it was. If it's on the 1st, I should be fine for rent.

I had the exact same problem when I started cash aid!!! The worker tells u the first but they don't tell u that sometimes its delayed and doesnt show up till like noon!! I remember waiting at midnight refreshing the balance over & over and getting all stressed out when nothing showed up. If ur rent is due the next day tell ur landlord ahead of time u might be a few hrs late just incase.

•Ugh that's exactly what I'm worried about! My landlord isn't very flexible so I might need to figure out a backup plan just in case.

When I was on CalWORKs it always came at midnight exactly on the 1st. Never had a problem. But I think different counties might process at different times? I'm in LA county if that helps.

this is kinda related but make sure u report any other income u get to ur worker cuz if u don't they can say u committed fraud and make u pay everything back!! happened to my sister when she didn't report a part time job

Have u tried calling the county about this? I gave up calling them after being on hold for 3+ hours and getting disconnected TWICE. So frustrating! I found this service called Claimyr that calls the county for you and holds your place in line, then calls you back when a worker is available. Saved me so much time and stress! Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE. Might be worth trying if you need to talk to someone about your deposit timing and can't get through.

Just FYI, if this is your first month on CalWORKs, sometimes you get a partial payment for the first month (depends on when you applied/were approved) and then the regular full amount on the 1st of the next month. So don't be confused if your first payment seems smaller than what you were expecting! They should have explained this to you but many workers don't bother to explain the details.

One more important thing to know: you can set up text or email alerts for when deposits hit your EBT card. Go to the California EBT website (www.ebt.ca.gov) or use the mobile app, create an account if you haven't already, and sign up for notifications. This way you'll know exactly when funds are available without having to constantly check your balance.

also just so u know the cash aid calendar is different from the calfresh calendar!! lots of ppl get confused bcuz calfresh benefits come on different days depending on ur case # but cash aid is always the 1st no matter what

Hey! I've been on CalWORKs for about 8 months now and can confirm that Cash Aid always deposits on the 1st regardless of your case number. The funds usually show up between midnight and 3am, but I've noticed it can vary slightly by county. Since your rent is due on the 2nd, you should definitely have access to your money in time. Pro tip: if you're ever worried about timing in the future, you can usually pay rent online or set up a payment through your bank's bill pay feature for the morning of the 1st, which gives you a little buffer even if the deposit is slightly delayed. Good luck with everything!

I just went through this same situation a few months ago! The deposit timing can definitely be stressful when you're cutting it close with bills. In my experience, the funds typically show up between midnight and 2am on the 1st, but I've had it happen as late as 6am once. Since your rent is due on the 2nd, you should be totally fine. Just make sure to check your balance early in the morning on the 1st before you make any payments. Also, if you haven't already, download the EBT app - it's way easier than calling the customer service line to check your balance. One thing that really helped me was setting up automatic rent payments through my bank for the 2nd of each month. That way even if there's a slight delay, I have a little cushion and don't have to stress about timing everything perfectly. Welcome to the program and hope everything works out smoothly for you!

•Thank you so much! That's really reassuring to hear from someone who just went through this. I was getting pretty anxious about the timing but it sounds like I should be fine. The automatic payment setup is a great idea - I'll definitely look into that once I get my first payment sorted out. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience!

Just want to add that you can also withdraw cash from your EBT card at most ATMs once the funds are deposited! There's usually a daily withdrawal limit (I think it's $600 for cash aid but double check that) and some ATMs charge fees while others don't. Banks like Bank of America, Wells Fargo, and credit unions usually don't charge fees for EBT withdrawals. This might be helpful if you need to pay rent in cash or if your landlord doesn't accept card payments. The cash option gives you more flexibility than just using the card directly.

•This is really good to know! I wasn't sure about the cash withdrawal options. My landlord actually prefers cash payments so this could work out perfectly. Do you know if there's a way to find out which ATMs near me don't charge fees? I want to avoid paying extra fees if I can help it.

Mei Chen
•@Adrian Connor You can use the EBT app or website to find fee-free ATMs near you! There s'usually a locator feature that shows which ones don t'charge. Also, most major bank ATMs like (Chase, BofA, Wells Fargo and) credit union ATMs are usually free for EBT cash withdrawals. Just avoid the little corner store ATMs - those almost always have fees. The app will show you exactly which ones are free before you go!

Hey there! I totally understand the stress about timing - I was in the exact same boat when I first got approved. CalWORKs Cash Aid does deposit on the 1st of every month regardless of your case number (that's only for CalFresh that's staggered). The funds usually hit between midnight and early morning, though I've seen it as late as 6am sometimes depending on the county's processing. Since your rent is due on the 2nd, you should be completely fine! I'd recommend checking your balance first thing in the morning on the 1st before making any payments, just to be safe. The EBT app makes this super easy - way better than calling that customer service line. One tip that saved me a lot of anxiety: talk to your landlord now and let them know you're expecting funds on the 1st but might not be able to pay until later that day. Most landlords are understanding if you communicate ahead of time. You could also look into setting up an online payment or bank transfer for later in the day on the 1st, which gives you a buffer in case there's any delay. Welcome to the program and don't stress too much - the timing usually works out just fine!

•Thank you so much for all this helpful information! It's really reassuring to hear from people who have been through this before. I'm definitely going to talk to my landlord today just to give them a heads up about the timing, and I'll check my balance first thing on the 1st before doing anything. The EBT app sounds like it'll be a lifesaver - I had no idea it was so much better than calling. Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and tips!

Just wanted to jump in here since I'm also pretty new to CalWORKs (about 6 months in). Everything everyone said about the 1st of the month timing is spot on! I was super stressed my first month too because my worker wasn't super clear about when exactly I could access the money. One thing that really helped me was calling the EBT customer service number the night before the 1st just to confirm my card was active and ready to receive the deposit. The automated system will tell you your current balance and when your next deposit is scheduled, so you don't have to talk to a person. It's available 24/7 too which is nice. Also, since you mentioned this is your first payment, make sure you activated your EBT card already! They should have mailed it to you after approval. If you haven't gotten it yet or need to activate it, definitely call your worker ASAP because you can't access the money without an active card. Hope everything works out smoothly for you - the first month is always the most nerve-wracking but it gets easier once you know the routine!

•This is such great advice, thank you! I actually did activate my card already - got it in the mail about 3 days after my approval letter came. I had no idea you could call the night before to check everything, that's really smart! I'm definitely going to do that on the 31st just to make sure everything looks good. It's so helpful to hear from people who remember what it was like being new to this - makes me feel way less anxious about the whole thing. Thanks for sharing your experience!

I'm pretty new to CalWORKs too and was just approved a couple weeks ago! Reading through all these responses is super helpful - I had a lot of the same questions about timing. My worker told me the 1st but didn't explain much beyond that. It's really reassuring to see that so many people confirm it's always the 1st regardless of case number and that it usually hits between midnight and early morning. I'm also dealing with tight timing on bills so I really appreciate everyone sharing their experiences. The tip about setting up alerts through the EBT app is genius - definitely doing that today. Thanks everyone for being so helpful to us newcomers!

I'm also a newcomer to CalWORKs and this thread has been incredibly helpful! Just got approved two weeks ago and was having the same anxiety about deposit timing. It's really reassuring to see so many people confirm that Cash Aid always deposits on the 1st regardless of case number - my worker mentioned the 1st but didn't explain the difference between Cash Aid and CalFresh timing, so I was confused. The tip about downloading the EBT app and setting up alerts is perfect - just did that and it's so much easier than trying to remember to call and check. Also really appreciate everyone mentioning that funds typically hit between midnight and early morning, but can sometimes be as late as 6am. That helps me plan better for bill payments. Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences - it makes such a difference for those of us who are new to navigating this system!

Just wanted to add my experience as someone who's been on CalWORKs for about a year now - all the advice here is spot on! Cash Aid definitely always deposits on the 1st regardless of case number (unlike CalFresh which is staggered). One thing I learned that might help: if you're really worried about timing, you can actually call your county worker and ask them to confirm when your case was authorized in the system. Sometimes for new approvals they can tell you if there are any processing delays that might affect your first deposit. Also, if you have a smartphone, the EBT mobile app will send you a push notification the moment funds hit your account - way faster than email alerts! Since your rent is due the 2nd you should be totally fine, but I totally get the anxiety. The first few months are definitely stressful until you get used to the routine. Welcome to the program and don't hesitate to ask questions here - this community has been incredibly helpful for me!

•This is all such valuable information, thank you! I had no idea about the push notifications through the mobile app - that sounds way more convenient than waiting for emails. I might actually call my worker tomorrow to double-check on the processing status since this is my first payment and I want to make sure there aren't any delays. It's so reassuring to hear from someone who's been through the adjustment period - a year in you must have the routine down! Really appreciate you sharing your experience and making newcomers like me feel welcome in this community.

Just got approved for CalWORKs myself about a month ago and went through the exact same stress about timing! Everyone here is absolutely right - Cash Aid deposits on the 1st regardless of case number (that's only CalFresh that's staggered by case number). My funds have hit between 12:30am and 2:15am every month so far, never later than that. Since your rent is due on the 2nd you'll definitely be fine! One thing that really helped my peace of mind was setting up the EBT app notifications - you get an instant alert the moment funds deposit so you don't have to keep checking. Also, if you're still worried, most landlords are pretty understanding if you just give them a heads up that payment might come later in the day on the 1st rather than the night before. Welcome to the program and try not to stress too much - the timing works out! This community has been amazing for getting real answers that workers don't always explain clearly.

I'm also brand new to CalWORKs (literally just got approved yesterday!) and this entire discussion has been such a lifesaver. I was panicking because my worker just said "funds available on the 1st" with zero additional details, and I have several bills due right after. Reading everyone's experiences about the midnight to early morning deposit window and that it's ALWAYS the 1st for Cash Aid (not staggered like CalFresh) has completely eased my anxiety. Just downloaded the EBT app based on all the recommendations here - the push notification feature sounds perfect for peace of mind. Also planning to call the automated line on the 31st to double-check everything looks good in the system. •Welcome to the program! I'm also super new to CalWORKs (just got approved last week like the original poster) and this thread has been absolutely incredible for getting real answers. It's so frustrating when workers give you the bare minimum info and leave you to figure out all the important details yourself! I was having the exact same panic about timing - my worker literally said the same thing "funds available on the 1st" with zero explanation about when exactly that means. Reading everyone's specific experiences about the midnight to 3am window has been so reassuring. Just set up the EBT app notifications too and it's such a relief knowing I'll get an instant alert when funds hit. The tip about calling the automated line the night before is genius - definitely doing that on the 31st! It's amazing how this community fills in all the gaps that the official system leaves. Thanks for adding your voice as another newcomer - it really helps knowing we're all figuring this out together!

As another newcomer to CalWORKs (just got approved a few days ago!), I can't tell you how helpful this entire thread has been. I was literally losing sleep over the timing question because my worker gave me the same vague "deposits on the 1st" answer with zero details about what that actually means in practice. Reading everyone's experiences about the midnight to early morning window (usually by 2-3am at the latest) has been such a relief. I had no idea that Cash Aid was different from CalFresh in terms of deposit scheduling - definitely would have been confused about that! Just downloaded the EBT app based on all the recommendations here and wow, the notification features are exactly what I needed. The tip about calling the automated line the night before to verify everything looks good is brilliant too - definitely adding that to my mental checklist. It's incredible how this community provides all the practical details that the official system somehow fails to explain clearly. Thank you to everyone for sharing real experiences and making those of us new to the program feel supported and informed. This is exactly the kind of information that makes all the difference when you're trying to navigate something completely new!
