When do CalWORKs Cash Aid payments hit EBT cards each month?
I just got approved for CalWORKs last month and received my first payment, but I'm confused about when the regular monthly payments are supposed to come through. My rent is due on the 1st, and I need to know if I can count on the Cash Aid being deposited before then. My worker mentioned something about payment schedules but I was so overwhelmed with all the paperwork that I forgot to write it down. Does everyone get paid on the same day each month or does it depend on your case number or something? I'm trying to budget and plan ahead so I don't fall behind on bills.

Cash Aid payments go out on a staggered schedule throughout the first 10 days of each month. The exact date depends on the last digit of your case number. If your case number ends in 1, you'll get paid on the 1st. If it ends in 2, you'll get paid on the 2nd, and so on. If your case number ends in 0, you'll get paid on the 10th. You can check your case number on any CalWORKs notice or on your BenefitsCal account.

•Thank you! My case number ends with 7 so I guess I'll get paid on the 7th. That's cutting it close with my rent. Do they ever deposit early or is it always exactly on those dates?

The previous responses are correct about the payment schedule being based on the last digit of your case number. However, I want to point out that if the scheduled date falls on a weekend or holiday, your payment will be deposited on the previous business day. So if your payment date falls on a Sunday, you'll actually get it on Friday. This might help with your rent situation. Also, if you're really concerned about timing, you might want to look into the Housing Support Program through CalWORKs - they sometimes can help with temporary rental assistance while you're getting stabilized.

•That's really helpful to know about it coming early if it falls on a weekend! I'll check my calendar. And I didn't know about the Housing Support Program - I'll definitely ask about that at my next appointment.

MY WORKER NEVER TOLD ME ANY OF THIS!!! I've been waiting for my payment for 3 days now and no one at the county office will pick up the phone! This is ridiculous how they expect us to pay bills when we don't even know when money is coming! I've called like 20 times today!!

•I had the same problem trying to reach my worker last month. What worked for me was using Claimyr - it's a service that gets you through to a CalWORKs worker without spending hours on hold. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/jzISHxCPLwE or just go to claimyr.com. They somehow get you through the phone system and a real person calls you back. Totally worth it when you need immediate answers about your benefits.

U should set up direct deposit insted of EBT for cash aid. I had so many problems with my EBT card - one time it got declined when I was trying to pay rent and I had to get money orders and it was a whole mess. At ur next appointment ask about direct deposit to ur bank account, its way better and sometimes hits a day early depending on ur bank.

•This is good advice. Direct deposit is definitely more reliable for paying bills. Just note that you'll need to fill out Form CW 2224 (Authorization for Direct Deposit) and provide a voided check or letter from your bank with your account and routing numbers. Your worker can provide the form, or you can find it online on the CDSS website.

Since your rent is due on the 1st but your payment comes on the 7th, you might want to talk to your worker about budgeting strategies. CalWORKs sometimes offers financial workshops that can help with this situation. A common approach is to set aside part of each month's payment for the following month's rent, so you're always paying rent with the previous month's benefits. It takes some discipline to get started, but once you're in that cycle, it reduces a lot of stress.

•That makes a lot of sense, but it's hard to get started with that system when I'm already behind. I'll definitely talk to my worker about any workshops they offer though. Do you know if they ever do emergency payments if someone is at risk of eviction?

•Yes, CalWORKs does have emergency assistance in certain situations. If you're at risk of eviction, you might qualify for Homeless Assistance, which can provide temporary shelter payments or help with rent/deposits. There are also community organizations that offer emergency rental assistance. Definitely discuss this with your worker - preventing homelessness is a priority for the program.

Something else to keep in mind - if you're just getting started with CalWORKs, make sure you understand the difference between your initial payment and your ongoing monthly payments. Sometimes the first payment can be prorated or adjusted based on when your case was approved during the month. Your regular monthly payments should be more predictable once you're in the system for a few months. Also, I'd recommend setting up text alerts through your bank if possible so you know the exact moment your payment hits - that way you're not constantly checking your balance and stressing about it.

•That's really helpful about the prorated first payment - I was wondering why my first payment seemed different from what I expected! And the text alerts idea is great, I'm definitely going to set that up. I've been checking my balance like every hour which is probably not healthy lol. Thanks for the practical advice!

One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is that you can check your payment history and upcoming deposit dates through your BenefitsCal online account or the mobile app. This is super helpful for planning ahead! Once you log in, go to "Case Information" and then "Benefit History" to see your payment pattern. You can also set up email notifications through the system to get reminders about when your benefits are being deposited. I found this way less stressful than trying to remember dates or constantly checking my card balance. The online account also shows if there are any holds or issues with your case that might delay payment, so you're not left wondering what happened if your money doesn't show up on schedule.

•This is exactly what I needed to know! I had no idea about the BenefitsCal app - I've just been using the EBT card to check my balance. Having access to payment history and being able to see upcoming dates will make budgeting so much easier. I'm going to download the app right now and set up those email notifications. Thank you for such a detailed explanation!

Just wanted to add that if you're having trouble with timing between rent and benefits, some landlords are understanding about CalWORKs payment schedules if you explain the situation upfront. I talked to my property manager when I first got on benefits and we worked out that I could pay rent by the 10th of each month instead of the 1st. It never hurts to ask - many landlords would rather have a reliable tenant who pays a few days late than deal with turnover. Also, if your landlord won't budge on the date, you might want to look into local emergency assistance programs through 211 (just dial 2-1-1) - they often have one-time rental assistance that can help bridge the gap while you get established on the payment schedule.

•This is such great advice about talking to your landlord! I never thought about asking to change my rent due date. My landlord seems pretty reasonable so maybe they'd be willing to work with me on this. And I had no idea about 211 - that's really good to know for emergencies. It's reassuring to know there are options if I get in a tight spot while I'm still figuring out this whole system. Thanks for sharing your experience with how you handled it!

One more tip that really helped me when I first started on CalWORKs - if you have a smartphone, take a screenshot of your case number and payment schedule info so you always have it handy. I used to panic when I couldn't remember my case number or payment date, especially when calling the office. Also, keep in mind that during the first few months, it's totally normal to feel overwhelmed by all the rules and schedules. I promise it gets easier once you've been through a few payment cycles and develop your own system for budgeting around the dates. Don't be too hard on yourself while you're learning - we've all been there!

•This is such a thoughtful reminder about taking screenshots! I'm definitely going to do that right now. You're right that it feels overwhelming at first - I was so stressed about getting everything wrong, but everyone here has been so helpful with practical tips. It's comforting to know that other people have figured this out and that I will too. Thanks for the encouragement and for normalizing how confusing it can be when you're new to the system!

I've been on CalWORKs for about 8 months now and wanted to share something that really helped me with the timing issue. Since my payment comes on the 6th but most of my bills are due on the 1st, I started using my local credit union's "bill pay" feature to schedule automatic payments for a few days after my benefits hit. This way I don't have to stress about remembering dates or worrying about late fees. Most banks and credit unions offer this service for free, and you can set it up so your rent, utilities, etc. get paid automatically on whatever date works with your CalWORKs schedule. It took a couple months to get everything aligned, but now I barely have to think about it. Just make sure you account for any processing time your bank might need - some transfers can take 1-2 business days.

•This is such a smart approach! I never thought about using automatic bill pay to work around the payment schedule. That would definitely eliminate a lot of the stress I'm feeling about timing everything perfectly. I'm going to call my bank tomorrow to ask about setting this up. Do you know if there are any fees for scheduling payments a few days out, or is it usually free as long as it's within the same month? I'm trying to be really careful about any extra costs while I'm getting my budget figured out.

•Most banks offer bill pay for free, especially credit unions! I use it with my credit union and there's no charge for scheduling payments within the same month. Just double-check when you call - some banks might charge for expedited payments, but regular bill pay that's scheduled a few days out is usually free. The peace of mind is totally worth it. I used to lose sleep worrying about whether I'd remember to pay everything on time, and now it's all automated. Just make sure to keep a little buffer in your account in case there are any small timing differences between when CalWORKs deposits and when your bills get pulled.

Just wanted to add something that might help with your rent situation - if you're really tight on timing and your landlord won't work with you on the due date, consider asking if they accept partial payments. Some landlords will let you pay half your rent on the 1st (maybe from savings or a small loan from family) and then the other half when your CalWORKs hits on the 7th. It's not ideal long-term, but it can help during those first few months while you're getting established and figuring out your budget rhythm. Also, don't forget that you might be eligible for utility assistance programs through LIHEAP (Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program) which can help free up more of your CalWORKs money for rent. Your worker should be able to help you apply for that too.

•This is really helpful about partial payments - I hadn't thought of that option! My landlord seems pretty understanding so maybe they'd be open to splitting the payment like that for the first couple months while I get into a routine. And I definitely want to look into LIHEAP - any extra help with utilities would make a huge difference in my budget. It's amazing how many resources are available that I just didn't know about. I'm learning that it's really worth asking about everything because there might be programs or options I haven't even heard of yet. Thanks for sharing these ideas!
