When do CalFresh extra allotments come in February 2025? Need for Super Bowl grocery shopping

I'm really stressing about my food budget for next month. My regular CalFresh benefits got reduced to only $43 last month (used to get $281!) and I'm trying to figure out when the supplemental payment is coming in February. I heard we're supposed to get some extra food stamps but nobody at the county office will give me a straight answer. I want to plan a small Super Bowl gathering for my kids and their friends, but can't afford it with my current benefit amount. Does anyone know the exact date the extra CalFresh amount hits our EBT cards in California? Do they even still do supplemental payments in 2025? My worker just keeps transferring me to voicemail when I call.

thye dont do extra payments anymore since covid emergency ended. what ur seeing is just ur regular benefits now

Are you sure? My neighbor said she got an extra payment last month on top of her regular benefits. I'm so confused now.

I think you might be confusing the regular issuance schedule with supplemental payments. The emergency allotments that gave everyone the maximum benefit amount for their household size ended back in early 2023. What you're getting now ($43) is your calculated benefit based on your income, expenses, and household size. Benefits are issued over the first 10 days of each month based on the last digit of your case number. There's no special Super Bowl supplement or anything like that.

Oh no, that's really bad news. Do you know if there's any way to get my benefits increased? My rent went up and I'm working fewer hours now, but I haven't reported those changes yet.

Yes! You should definitely report those changes right away. If your income decreased or your housing costs increased, your benefits could go up significantly. You don't have to wait for your next SAR7 or recertification to report these types of changes. Call your county office or submit the changes through BenefitsCal online.

I WENT THROUGH THIS EXACT THING!!! The county keeps cutting benefits while food prices are SKYROCKETING! I was getting $267 for me and my two kids last year and now it's down to $86!!! How are we supposed to feed our families on this?? The system is totally broken and nobody cares. I've called so many times and just get the runaround. They say one thing then do another. So sick of it.

I understand the frustration, but benefits are calculated based on a specific formula that takes into account your income, household size, and expenses like rent and utilities. If your benefits decreased, it's usually because the system shows your income increased or expenses decreased. You can request a breakdown of how your benefit amount was calculated from your caseworker, and if you think there's an error, you have the right to appeal the decision.

They NEVER answer when I call! I've spent HOURS on hold just to get disconnected!!

Sorry about your benefit reduction. If your benefits seem lower than they should be, make sure you're claiming all eligible deductions on your application or SAR7. Many people don't realize you can deduct childcare expenses, some medical costs for seniors/disabled household members, and the full amount of your rent and utilities. Check if you reported all these correctly. BTW, I had the same problem reaching my worker until I found a service called Claimyr that got me through to a real person at CalFresh in about 10 minutes. They call the county for you and put you on when they reach a real person. Saved me hours of waiting on hold. Their video explains it better than I can: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 or check claimyr.com. Totally worth it to actually speak to someone who can explain your benefit calculation.

Thank you so much! I definitely haven't been reporting my full rent ($1950/month) because my landlord gives me unofficial cash discounts sometimes. And I didn't know childcare counts as a deduction! I pay my sister $600/month to watch the kids when I work weekends. I'll check out that service too - I'm desperate to talk to someone who can actually help.

does that service cost money? seems sketchy tbh

To give you the most accurate information: There are no more extra/emergency allotments as others have mentioned. Those ended in February 2023 nationwide. What you're currently receiving ($43) is your calculated benefit amount based on the standard formula. However, there are two important things to know: 1. California does issue quarterly Nutrition Benefits for families with school-aged children through the CalFresh program. The next one should be in mid-February 2025. If you have eligible children, check your EBT balance around February 10-15. 2. If your circumstances have changed (income decreased, rent increased, more dependents, etc.), you should submit a SAR 3 (Change Report Form) immediately. You don't have to wait for your regular reporting period if the change would increase your benefits. The regular issuance schedule for February benefits is based on the last digit of your case number (1st through 10th of the month). No special Super Bowl timing, unfortunately.

This is really helpful! I do have school-aged children (8 and 11), so maybe that's what my neighbor was talking about. I'll check my balance mid-February. And I'll definitely submit the SAR 3 form with my updated income and expenses. Thanks for the clear explanation!

This might sound stupid but are you sure you're checking on the right day? My sister thought her benefits were cut but she was just checking too early. CalFresh benefits get deposited on different days based on the last digit of your case number. Mine's a 7 so I get mine on the 7th of each month. When do yours normally come in?

Not a stupid question at all! Mine usually come on the 3rd (my case number ends in 3). I checked on the 3rd and again today (the 5th) and still only have the $43 from January. I'm really hoping something changes before the Super Bowl so I can at least make some snacks for the kids.

I work with CalFresh recipients and wanted to explain why your benefits may have been reduced. The most common reasons are: 1. Increased income (even small increases can impact benefits) 2. Change in household composition 3. Unreported income discovered during verification 4. Missing or incomplete SAR7 information 5. Expenses like rent or utilities not fully reported To maximize your benefits, make sure you're reporting all allowable expenses on your SAR7 or recertification application. This includes: - Full rent/mortgage amount - Utilities (if not using the standard utility allowance) - Child care expenses - Medical expenses over $35/month for elderly or disabled household members - Court-ordered child support payments Regarding the timing of benefits, they're issued from the 1st-10th of each month based on the last digit of your case number. There are no supplemental payments tied to specific events like the Super Bowl. If you believe your benefits were incorrectly calculated, you can request a state hearing within 90 days of receiving your Notice of Action.

Thank you for all this information! I'm thinking #1 and #5 might be my issues. I got a small raise last summer (about $1.25/hour) but I'm actually working fewer hours now. And I definitely haven't been reporting my full rent because sometimes I pay less in cash. I'll make sure to update everything on my next report.
