How to check CalFresh balance and deposit date on EBT card?

I recently got approved for CalFresh benefits but I'm completely lost on how to check my current balance and when my next deposit will hit my account. This is my first month receiving benefits and I'm trying to budget carefully. I've been looking through all the paperwork they sent me but nothing clearly explains how to check this information. Do I need to call the county office every time I want to check my balance? Is there an app or website? Also, does CalFresh always deposit on the same day each month or does it vary? I'm so confused and really need this info to plan my grocery shopping for my kids.

You have a few different options to check your balance and deposit date: 1. Call the EBT customer service number on the back of your card (it's toll-free) 2. Create an account on the California EBT website: www.ebt.ca.gov 3. Download the CalFresh Mobile app 4. Check your receipt after any purchase - your remaining balance prints at the bottom For deposit dates, CalFresh benefits are loaded onto your EBT card on the same day each month based on the last digit of your case number. Benefits are available by the 10th of each month, with specific dates varying by county. The exact schedule should have been included in your approval packet.

Thank you so much! I didn't even notice there was a phone number on the back of my card, feeling kinda silly now. Do you know if the app shows the future deposit date too or just the current balance? And do stores charge any fee when I check my balance on the receipt?

i just check mine on the mobile app its WAY easier than calling everytime... download CalFresh Mobile and u can check balance anytime, even set up notifications for deposits. also FYI the deposits hit at midnight on ur assigned day but sometimes takes till like 6am to show up

Thanks! Just downloaded the app. You're right, it's super convenient. Still figuring out how to set up the deposit notifications though. I appreciate the tip about the timing - good to know they might be a little delayed in the morning.

Just to clarify, the official CalFresh Mobile app is secure and encrypted. It's developed and maintained by the state. What sometimes happens is people download fake lookalike apps instead of the official one. Always make sure you're downloading the official app from the California Department of Social Services.

I've been on CalFresh for about 2 years now, and the easiest way I've found is definitely using the website (www.ebt.ca.gov). You can check your balance, see your next deposit date, AND view your transaction history all in one place. Super helpful for budgeting! As for your deposit date question - yes, it's always the same day each month based on your case number. Mine hits on the 6th every month like clockwork. Check your approval letter - it should have your specific date listed somewhere.

Thank you! I found my approval letter and you're right, it says my benefits will be available on the 4th of each month. The website sounds perfect for what I need. I really appreciate the help!

If you're having trouble reaching someone at CalFresh to explain anything about your EBT card or benefits, I had great results using Claimyr. Instead of waiting on hold forever, they wait for you and call you back when a real person is on the line. Helped me resolve an issue with my deposit date that wasn't showing correctly online. Their video explains it better than I can: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 and their website is claimyr.com if you want to check it out.

That actually sounds really useful. I tried calling the county office earlier this week about another question and gave up after being on hold for 40 minutes. I'll check out that video, thanks!

Does this actually work?? I've been trying to reach someone about my missing deposit for THREE DAYS and keep getting disconnected after waiting for like an hour each time.

@profile6 It definitely worked for me. I was skeptical too but was desperate after multiple disconnects. They called me back in about 40 minutes with an actual caseworker on the line. Saved me hours of frustration.

THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO CONFUSE YOU!!!! They make it complicated ON PURPOSE so people give up and don't get their full benefits. I've been dealing with CalFresh for 5 years and they've NEVER made anything simple! Also don't trust the app 100%, I've had times when it showed one balance but the actual store showed a different amount. ALWAYS get a receipt when you shop!!!

While the system can definitely be confusing, the EBT balance information is generally accurate across platforms. If you've experienced discrepancies, it might be because some purchases or deposits hadn't processed fully yet. Always reporting these issues to the EBT customer service line is important so they can investigate.

i always just ask the cashier to check my balance before i start shopping...they can do that for you at any store that takes ebt! that way i no exactly how much i have 2 spend right then. sumtimes the app is slow to update if u just used the card somewhere else

That's a good tip! I was actually a bit embarrassed to ask the cashier, but I guess they must get that request all the time. I'll try that next time I'm shopping.

Btw if u ever want 2 check if ur deposit hit without logging in, just try 2 buy something small like at 7-11 after midnight on ur deposit day...the receipt will show the new balance with the deposit added

Smart idea! Thanks for the tip.

Just wanted to add that if you're shopping at places like Walmart or Target, their self-checkout machines also let you check your EBT balance without making a purchase. Just insert your card, select EBT, and choose "balance inquiry" - super convenient when you're already at the store and want to double-check before you start shopping. Also, keep your approval paperwork somewhere safe because it has all your important case info including your deposit schedule!

This is incredibly helpful! I had no idea you could check your balance at self-checkout without buying anything. I've been overthinking this whole process - sounds like there are actually tons of convenient ways to stay on top of my balance. Really appreciate everyone taking the time to explain all these options to a newbie like me!

One more tip that's really helpful for budgeting - if you sign up for the ebt.ca.gov website account, you can actually see your transaction history going back several months. This is super useful for tracking your spending patterns and figuring out how to make your benefits last the whole month. You can see exactly where you shopped, how much you spent, and what your balance was after each transaction. It really helped me get better at meal planning and budgeting when I first started receiving CalFresh benefits!

This is such a great tip! I never thought about using the transaction history for budgeting purposes. I've been struggling to make my benefits last the full month, so being able to see my spending patterns sounds really helpful. I'm definitely going to set up that website account now. Thanks for sharing this - it's exactly the kind of practical advice I need as someone who's completely new to all this!

As someone who's been helping folks navigate CalFresh for a while, I just want to say you're asking all the right questions! Don't feel silly about not knowing this stuff - the system really isn't intuitive for newcomers. One thing I didn't see mentioned yet: if you ever have issues with your card being declined even though you think you have benefits, sometimes there's a 24-48 hour delay between when benefits are "issued" and when they're actually available to spend. This is rare but can happen, especially around holidays or weekends. Also, make sure you're using your card at authorized retailers - not all stores accept EBT, and some that do only accept it for certain items. The fact that you're being proactive about learning how to check your balance and budget carefully shows you're going to do great with managing your benefits! Welcome to the CalFresh community.
