Empty CalFresh eNotices showing as 'viewed' but nothing there - should I be concerned?

Has anyone else had this weird issue with CalFresh eNotices? I got notifications for 2 eNotices today, so I immediately logged into my BenefitsCal account to check what they were about (worried it might be about verification documents or something urgent). But when I opened them, both notices were completely blank! Now the system shows them as 'viewed' even though there was literally nothing to view. I'm paranoid that I missed something important or that there's some glitch that might affect my benefits. Should I call my caseworker about these blank notices or just ignore them? My recertification isn't due for another 4 months, and I haven't had any income changes, so I'm confused about what these could be.

This happened to me twice last month! The blank eNotices thing seems to be a system glitch that's been happening since they updated the BenefitsCal platform. In my case, nothing bad happened to my benefits, but I did call my worker just to be safe. She confirmed they were system-generated errors and not actual notices. If you're worried, I'd suggest calling your county office to confirm nothing's pending for your case.

Thank you! That's such a relief to hear. Did your worker say if they're working on fixing this glitch? It gave me a mini heart attack thinking I might have missed something important.

The BenefitsCal system has been NOTHING but problems since day one!! My worker admitted they hate it too. First the login issues, then the document upload failures, and now phantom notices. Meanwhile they expect US to jump through hoops perfectly or get our benefits cut. Just ridiculous.

I work for a community organization that helps people with CalFresh applications, and we've heard about this issue from several clients recently. It appears to be related to a system update they rolled out in February 2025. The blank eNotices are often duplicates of notices that were already sent by mail or they're system tests that accidentally got sent to recipients. If you're concerned, you should check your physical mail for the next few days to see if paper notices arrive. You can also call your county office, but unless you're expecting a specific action (like pending verification or recertification), it's probably just the system glitch others have mentioned.

Good to know! I haven't received any physical mail from them yet, but I'll keep an eye out. My regular SAR7 isn't due until next month, so maybe it's just an early automatic reminder that got corrupted somehow?

This kept happening to me and I COULD NOT get through to anyone at the county office to ask about it. After 3 days of trying I found this service called Claimyr that got me through to a real person in like 20 minutes. They basically call the CalFresh office for you and when they reach a live person, they connect you. Saved me hours of being on hold! Check out their video to see how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 or go to claimyr.com. The worker I finally reached said those blank notices were a known technical issue and nothing to worry about.

Does this actually work? I've been trying to reach someone at the Santa Clara County office for DAYS about my income verification. Might try this if it actually works.

Yeah it really did work for me! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after being hung up on three times by their automated system. Way better than sitting on hold all day.

I experienced something similar, but in my case, I found out the blank notices were actually related to an internal case note my eligibility worker made that accidentally triggered a notice. Here's what you can do: 1. Check the Message Center in BenefitsCal, not just the eNotices section 2. Look at your Documents section to see if anything new was uploaded 3. If you have CalWORKs too, make sure the notices weren't for that program instead 4. If you're worried, call your county office and ask them to check if any notices were supposed to be sent to you Empty notices typically don't indicate any action you need to take, but it's always better to verify if you're concerned about your benefits status.

Thanks for the detailed steps! I checked the Message Center and Documents sections like you suggested, but nothing new there either. I only have CalFresh, no other benefits, so that's not it. Maybe I'll try calling just to make sure.

No, eNotices are different from text notifications. eNotices are the official communications from the county about your CalFresh benefits that appear in your BenefitsCal account - they're the digital version of the letters you'd otherwise get in the mail. Texts are just reminders or alerts telling you to check your account or that something has been posted. You should definitely be checking your BenefitsCal account regularly, especially if you opted for paperless notifications!

anyone else notice the website is down like every sunday night? maybe they were doing maintenance and the blank notices happened during that?

Update from my county worker: They confirmed this is a known issue happening statewide. The blank notices are being generated during system maintenance but don't contain any actual information. They said you don't need to call about them unless you're expecting an important notice about your case. They're supposedly working on a fix that will be implemented in the next system update.

Thank you so much for the update! That definitely puts my mind at ease. Fingers crossed they fix it soon because it really is anxiety-inducing to get notices and then find nothing inside them.

I've been dealing with this exact same issue for the past few weeks! Got 4 blank eNotices over two different days and it was driving me crazy thinking I missed something critical. After reading everyone's responses here, I feel so much better knowing it's a widespread system glitch. I actually did call my county office (took forever to get through) and they confirmed what others have said - it's just phantom notices from system maintenance. They told me to ignore any blank ones unless I'm specifically waiting for something like recertification paperwork. Really hoping they get this fixed soon because the anxiety of thinking you missed an important notice is no joke!

Same here! I'm new to CalFresh and when I got my first blank eNotice last week, I was convinced I had somehow messed up my application or missed a deadline. Spent hours trying to figure out what went wrong before finding this thread. It's really reassuring to know this is just a technical issue and not something I did. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it's so helpful for those of us who are still learning how all this works!
