Can I cancel my unemployment claim to qualify for CalFresh? Being denied benefits due to unemployment I never received!
So frustrated with the system right now! I lost my job at the end of January and just got approved for public housing (which I desperately need). I applied for CalFresh and cash aid to help cover rent, but they're saying I HAVE to apply for unemployment first. I didn't want to because I knew it might put me over the income limit for housing, but they insisted. Guess what happened? CalFresh denied me because of an unemployment award letter showing potential benefits - even though I NEVER CERTIFIED and HAVEN'T RECEIVED A SINGLE DOLLAR from unemployment! They're counting phantom income against me! My housing manager is giving me one final chance to prove I'm not actually receiving unemployment. Has anyone successfully canceled an unemployment claim? Will EDD give me official documentation proving I canceled or never received payments? I'm thinking of going directly to an unemployment office tomorrow since calling is totally useless (they hang up every time!). This isn't strictly a CalFresh question, but I'm desperate for advice before I lose my housing opportunity too.

•Thank you SO much for the clear steps! I'll definitely ask for that "Claim Statement" showing $0 paid. Do you think I should also get something showing I've withdrawn my claim entirely? I'm worried housing won't accept just the $0 payment proof and will think future payments might come. This whole system is so confusing...just trying to keep a roof over my head.
