CalFresh benefits stolen from EBT card AGAIN - how to report theft faster this time?
So frustrated right now!!! My CalFresh benefits were completely WIPED OUT from my EBT card AGAIN ðŸ˜ðŸ˜¡ This just happened to me last month and it took a FULL MONTH to get my benefits back after reporting the theft. Now I have to go through this nightmare all over again! I'm so careful with my card - I NEVER let anyone use it, not even my kids. I don't share my PIN with anyone. I check my balance regularly and yesterday all my $525 February benefits were there, today ZERO. I have 3 kids to feed and no grocery money now. Has anyone found a faster way to report EBT theft and get benefits replaced? I can't wait another month while my case worker "investigates" what happened. Did anyone get their stolen benefits back faster than 30 days?

•6 WEEKS?! I can't wait that long again! Did they make you fill out that affidavit form and get it notarized? Last time they gave me so much paperwork.

I'm sorry this is happening again. There's been a huge increase in EBT skimming theft in California. When benefits are stolen, you need to: 1) Call the EBT customer service immediately to report it and have your card deactivated (877-328-9677), 2) Request a new card, 3) File a police report, 4) Contact your county office to complete the EBT-2259 benefit theft form, and 5) Submit all documentation ASAP. Most importantly, make sure you're specifically asking for "expedited replacement" due to hardship. They can prioritize your case if you emphasize you have children and no food. The standard investigation takes 30 days, but expedited cases can be processed in 5-10 business days.

•Thank you!!! I didn't know about asking for "expedited replacement" - nobody mentioned that option last time. I already called EBT customer service this morning and deactivated the card but they just transferred me to the county office voicemail that nobody answers. 😫 I'll definitely request this expedited processing when I finally reach someone!

This is getting ridiculous with the EBT theft everywhere! Did you use your card at sketchy stores or ATMs? Sometimes they have skimmers installed. Also check if your card is the new chip version with the gold square - those are harder to clone.

•I only use it at Walmart and Food4Less! And yes I have the chip card - got it replaced last month after the first theft. Doesn't seem to make any difference with these scammers. 😡

When this happened to me last year, I spent THREE DAYS trying to reach someone at the county office. Kept getting voicemail or disconnected after waiting for hours. I finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a live person at the CalFresh office in about 20 minutes. Worth every penny because I was able to explain my situation directly to a caseworker who started the expedited replacement process right away. You can see how it works in their video: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Definitely helped me get my benefits back faster than just waiting for someone to call me back.

•Thank you!!! I've been calling all morning and either get disconnected or sent to voicemail. I'll definitely check out that service. At this point I just need to talk to a real person who can help me!

THE SAME EXACT THING HAPPENED TO ME!!! They stole my benefits TWO MONTHS IN A ROW! I think it's an inside job or something. The county workers act like we're lying but how come they can't stop this??? The system is completely broken and they don't care that families are going hungry while they take their sweet time doing "investigations.

•While the fraud investigation does take time, I recommend everyone enable account alerts so you're notified of every transaction. Also, never use your card at outdoor ATMs, check for card skimmers before inserting your card, and change your PIN regularly. You can sign up for text/email alerts through the EBT mobile app or at www.ebt.ca.gov.

When my mom had her benefits stolen last year, what helped speed things up was going IN PERSON to the county office with all her documentation. She brought her ID, the police report number, bank statements showing she didn't withdraw the money, and proof of hardship (past-due utility bills). The worker was able to process her expedited replacement request right there. She got emergency benefits loaded within 3 days and the full replacement within 2 weeks. Much faster than waiting on the phone.

•That's really helpful advice. I didn't think about bringing bank statements to prove I didn't take the money myself. Did she need an appointment or could she just walk in? Our county office always has a 3+ hour wait.

•I've definitely thought about that possibility, but my kids are all under 8 years old, and I'm a single parent. I keep my card hidden in my wallet and never take it out around them. The weird thing is I still have my physical card - it hasn't left my possession, so I think it must be getting skimmed somehow.

Quick update on EBT theft prevention: California has been rolling out increased security measures for EBT accounts. Make sure you've done these things to protect your replacement benefits: 1. Create an online account at www.ebt.ca.gov if you haven't already 2. Enable two-factor authentication for your online account 3. Set up transaction alerts via text message 4. Use the "lock card" feature in the app when not actively shopping 5. Change your PIN immediately after receiving your new card Also, when your case is being processed, ask your worker about emergency food assistance through local food banks. Many counties can provide immediate referrals while your EBT theft claim is being processed.

•Thank you SO much for this info! I didn't know about the "lock card" feature - that sounds perfect. Going to set up all these security measures as soon as my replacement card arrives. And I'll definitely ask about emergency food assistance because we're already down to what's in the pantry.

This is becoming such a huge problem! I read in the news that California is planning to eventually replace all EBT cards with the newer versions that have tap-to-pay and better security. But who knows when that'll actually happen 🙄
