anyone else kids get different amounts? my 2yr old got $580 but my 5yr old only got $412?? both on same calfresh case
The P-EBT benefit amounts can vary by child based on several factors, including their exact age category and when they became eligible for CalFresh. Children who were eligible for the entire benefit period receive the maximum amount, while those who became eligible partway through receive prorated benefits. That's why your children received different amounts despite being on the same case.
Unfortunately, the emergency allotments (the "extra" CalFresh benefits) ended over two years ago when the federal public health emergency declaration for COVID ended. Each household now only receives their regular calculated benefit amount based on household size, income, and expenses. What might help you is reporting any changes that could increase your benefit amount: 1. Decreased income 2. Increased rent/housing costs 3. Increased utility expenses 4. Childcare expenses 5. Medical expenses over $35/month (for elderly or disabled household members) You can report these changes at BenefitsCal.com or by submitting verification to your county office. This might increase your regular monthly benefit.
Thank you for this detailed explanation! I had no idea the extras were tied to COVID. I'm definitely going to check if I can get more for childcare expenses - I'm paying $950/month for after-school care that I never reported because nobody told me I could!
That's because people keep spreading rumors without understanding how CalFresh actually works! The pandemic emergency allotments ended YEARS ago, but the misinformation keeps circulating. It's actually harmful because people budget expecting money that will never come.
Everyone's giving good advice about income reporting, but I wanted to add something important: If your hours/income will be changing significantly from month to month (like more than $100 increase), remember that with CalFresh you need to report if you go over your Income Reporting Threshold (IRT). That amount should be listed on your last CalFresh approval notice. This is separate from your regular SAR7 reporting. Many people miss this and end up with overpayments they have to pay back later.
Thank you for mentioning this! I didn't even think about the IRT. I'll dig out my approval notice tonight and check what that amount is. My hours do vary a bit each month depending on client needs.
Good point! The IRT is super important. If u go over that amount, u gotta report within 10 days even if its not SAR7 time. OP - the IRT is usually like 130% of the poverty level for ur household size.
hey just wonderin - do u get paid differently for community hours vs home hours? cuz thats what would affect calfresh not where u clock in
Quick tip from someone who just went through this: Take a screenshot of your current balance before activating the new card! That way if there's any discrepancy you have proof of what was supposed to transfer. I did this and everything went smoothly, but better safe than sorry with something as important as food benefits.
That's a really smart idea! I'll definitely do that. Thanks for the suggestion!
the whole system is so frustrating why cant they just leave things alone my benefits got delayed last time they did a "system upgrade" and i couldnt feed my kids for 3 days
I'm sorry you had that experience. System upgrades can definitely cause temporary issues, but the 4.0 cards are being implemented to reduce fraud and protect everyone's benefits long-term. If you experience any delays this time, request expedited assistance and mention that you have children with no food. Counties are required to address emergency food needs within 24 hours.

One more thing about P-EBT that's confusing people - if your kid changed schools during the eligibility period, benefits might be split or delayed. My neighbor's kids switched from one Riverside school to another in January, and she had to call to get it straightened out. Just something to keep in mind if anyone is in that situation.

•That's good to know! My younger one did change schools after winter break when we moved to a different part of town. I'll definitely keep an eye out for any issues. Thanks for the heads up!

•That's great news! It does sound like Riverside County distribution is now underway. For everyone else waiting, this is a good sign that you should be receiving your notices soon. Remember to activate the card as soon as you receive it, and create a PIN you'll remember easily.
