Will CalFresh benefits load at midnight on issuance day or do I have to wait?
So my CalFresh benefits are supposed to reload tomorrow (the 11th according to my last approval letter), but I'm literally out of food tonight. Does anyone know if the benefits actually load right at midnight or do they process them during business hours? I need to make an emergency grocery run for my kids' breakfast and I'm trying to figure out if I can go shopping at the 24-hour Walmart after midnight tonight or if I need to find another solution. Thanks for any help!

In my experience, benefits almost always load at midnight or sometimes even a little earlier like 11pm the night before. I've definitely gone shopping right after midnight many times when things were tight. Just be aware that the exact time can vary slightly - I once went at 12:05am and it hadn't loaded yet, but when I tried again at 12:30am it worked fine.

•Thank you so much! That gives me hope. I'll give it a try around midnight and see if it works.

It depends on ur county tbh, mine always loads like 1-2am but my sister in a different county gets hers at exactly midnight. Sometimes the system glitches too lol

•What county are you in? I'm in LA County if that helps. I'll try at midnight and if it doesn't work maybe check again around 1-2am like you mentioned.

The official answer is that benefits are made available on your assigned issuance date, which is based on the last digit of your case number. However, in practice, most counties process the electronic transfers overnight, so benefits typically appear between 12am-2am on your issuance day. There are occasional technical delays, so it's not 100% guaranteed to be available exactly at midnight. If you're in a true emergency situation and can't wait until morning, you might want to call your county office first thing tomorrow if the midnight option doesn't work out.

•Thank you for the detailed info! I didn't realize it was connected to the last digit of my case number - that makes sense. I'll check tonight and hopefully it works.

•Yep! I remember the first time I tried at midnight and it worked - felt like I discovered a secret hack lol. Now I always shop at odd hours when the store is empty.

This might help if you need to speak with someone at your county office about this or other CalFresh questions - I recently found a service called Claimyr that helped me get through to a real person at the CalFresh office when I couldn't get past the automated system. They basically call and wait on hold for you then connect you once a real person answers. Made a huge difference when I had an urgent benefits issue. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8

•Thanks for the tip! I might need this tomorrow if my card doesn't work tonight. Bookmarking that site just in case.

Just a heads up that sometimes there can be system maintenance that delays the usual midnight loading. Back in January, I stayed up to shop at midnight and my benefits didn't actually load until 6am because they were updating something in the EBT system. So definitely have a backup plan just in case. But to directly answer your question - yes, it's usually midnight, not during business hours. They don't manually press a button during the day or anything. It's all automated.

•This is absolutely correct. The EBT system runs on automated schedules, but occasional maintenance or high-volume processing can cause delays. If you're ever in this situation again and need immediate food assistance, remember that many counties have emergency same-day services for families with children who are completely out of food. You'd need to call your county office first thing in the morning though.

UPDATE: IT WORKED!!! Just got back from Walmart at 12:40am and my benefits were loaded! Thank you everyone for the help. Such a relief to have food in the house again.

•That's great news! I'm so glad it worked out for you and your kids. It's such a helpless feeling to be waiting for those benefits to load when you're out of food.
