What time do CalFresh EBT benefits deposit? Can't access funds at 12:01 AM
I'm usually awake late at night and was hoping to do some early morning grocery shopping when my CalFresh benefits hit my EBT card. This month I waited until 12:01 AM on my deposit date (the 10th), but when I tried to check my balance at the ATM, nothing was there yet. Does anyone know what exact time CalFresh loads benefits onto EBT cards in California? I've heard some people say it's midnight, others say it's like 4 AM or 6 AM. Trying to plan my shopping trip and wondering if there's an actual set time or if it varies by county?

I've been on CalFresh for about 3 years now, and the benefits are usually deposited early morning on your assigned day. It's not exactly at midnight despite what some people think. The system typically updates between 2-6 AM, though I've noticed it's usually closer to 4 AM in my experience. Your benefit availability date is based on the last digit of your case number - the CalFresh office should have told you which day of the month you'll receive benefits (usually between the 1st and 10th). The time is the same regardless of which county you're in since it's a state-level system.

Thanks! I knew about the date (mine is definitely the 10th), but wasn't sure about the time. I'll try checking again around 5 AM then. Really appreciate the info!

Yeah same for me! I'm in Sacramento and I've had different experiences each month. Last month it was there at like 4am but month before it didn't show up til almost 8am. So frustrating when you need groceries ASAP

THEY NEVER TELL YOU THE ACTUAL TIME!!! This drives me CRAZY every month! I've called the EBT customer service number a million times and they just say

While I understand your frustration, the reason they don't commit to a specific time is because the system does batch processing overnight and can vary slightly each month depending on system load. They don't want to promise midnight and then have people upset if it's 2 AM instead. The benefits will definitely be there by morning on your assigned day.

In my experience working with CalFresh beneficiaries, the EBT system processes the deposits in batches overnight, usually completing by 6 AM. The technical answer is that benefits are deposited based on a processing schedule that runs from approximately 2 AM - 6 AM on your designated day, which is determined by the last digit of your case number. \n\nIf you're experiencing delays beyond 6 AM on your assigned day, there might be an issue with your case or account that needs addressing. I'd recommend contacting your county CalFresh office directly. Many clients have success using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through quickly rather than waiting on hold for hours. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8

Thank you for the detailed explanation! This is really helpful. I think I was just being impatient trying at 12:01 AM. I'll wait until morning next time. I've bookmarked that Claimyr site for future reference - my county office is impossible to reach by phone normally.

this is actually a really good question that comes up a lot! when i first got on calfresh i thought it was midnight too lol. but from my experience (im in alameda county) my benefits always hit between 4-5am. i've talked to other people in my building who get calfresh and we all see it around the same time even though we have different days. \n\nbtw if you need to check without going to an atm, you can use the ebt app or call the number on the back of your card. saves you a trip in the middle of the night!

OMG I totally forgot about the app! 🤦♀️ That would have saved me the trip to the ATM. Thanks for the reminder!

wait r we talking about calfresh or calworks? cuz those r different. calfresh is only for food you cant withdraw cash from it. calworks cash aid you can withdraw but calfresh is just for groceries.

Sorry for the confusion! I meant checking my balance at the ATM, not withdrawing cash. I know CalFresh is only for food purchases. I should have been clearer.

Ella rollingthunder87
You're right to point out the distinction! CalFresh (formerly Food Stamps) can only be used for eligible food purchases, while CalWORKs provides cash aid that can be withdrawn. They do use the same EBT card in California, but the benefits are separate. The deposit schedules are similar though - both typically process overnight.

I tried tracking the exact time for 3 months straight earlier this year. January was 3:42am, February was 4:17am, and March was 3:58am according to when the balance showed up in the app. So definitely not consistent to the minute, but always between 3-4:30am for me!

I'm new to CalFresh and this thread has been super informative! I was wondering the same thing since I just got approved last week. My deposit date is the 15th so I haven't experienced this yet. It's good to know it's typically early morning rather than midnight - I was planning to stay up late too! The EBT app tip is really helpful since I don't have a car and the nearest ATM is a bit of a walk. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences!

•Welcome to CalFresh! It's great that you found this thread helpful. Since your deposit date is the 15th, you'll be able to test out what everyone has shared here soon. The EBT app is definitely a game-changer when you don't have easy access to an ATM - you can check your balance anytime and even see your transaction history. Just make sure to download the official "ebtEDGE" app for California. Good luck with your first deposit and welcome to the community! 🙂

Just wanted to chime in with my experience from Orange County - I've been getting CalFresh for about 8 months now and my benefits consistently show up between 4-5 AM on my deposit date (the 8th). I used to set alarms to check at midnight when I first started, but learned pretty quickly that was pointless! Now I just check when I wake up and they're always there. The EBT app has been a lifesaver for checking balance without having to find an ATM. For anyone new to this, don't stress about the exact time - just know they'll be there by morning and you can start your grocery shopping!

•Thanks for sharing your Orange County experience! It's really reassuring to hear that the timing is pretty consistent across different counties. I'm in Riverside County and just got approved for CalFresh last month - still waiting for my first deposit on the 3rd. It's helpful to know that 4-5 AM seems to be the sweet spot for most people. I was definitely planning to stay up until midnight like the original poster, so you probably saved me from a sleepless night! The EBT app tip keeps coming up in this thread so I'm definitely downloading that today. Really appreciate this community sharing real experiences instead of just the vague "sometime in the morning" that the official sources give you.

I'm in Fresno County and have been getting CalFresh for about 6 months now. My benefits always deposit around 3:30-4:00 AM on my assigned day (the 12th). I learned this the hard way after staying up until midnight the first couple times! 😅 One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is that sometimes there can be delays during holidays or weekends. If your deposit date falls on a weekend, the benefits usually still process overnight Saturday into Sunday, but I've noticed it might be a bit later - sometimes closer to 6 AM. Same thing happened last month when there was a federal holiday. The EBT app is definitely the way to go for checking your balance. I have it set up with notifications so I get an alert when my balance updates, which usually happens around 4 AM. Saves me from having to remember to check manually! For anyone who hasn't downloaded it yet, make sure you get the official "ebtEDGE" app - there are some fake ones out there that aren't secure.

•This is really helpful information about the holiday delays! I hadn't thought about that factor. I'm still pretty new to CalFresh (just got my card last month) and my first deposit date happened to fall on a regular weekday, so I didn't experience any delays. It's good to know that weekends and holidays might push the time back a bit later. The notification feature on the ebtEDGE app sounds amazing - I had no idea it could alert you when your balance updates! I've been manually checking every morning which is kind of a pain. Thanks for the tip about avoiding fake apps too, that's definitely something to watch out for when you're new to all this.

I'm in Los Angeles County and have been on CalFresh for about a year now. My benefits consistently deposit between 3:45-4:15 AM on my assigned day (the 7th). Like others have mentioned, I made the mistake of staying up until midnight the first few times too! One thing I've noticed is that the deposit time can vary slightly during busy months - like around the holidays when more people are using the system. But it's never been later than 5 AM in my experience. For those mentioning the ebtEDGE app - definitely recommend it! You can also set up text alerts through the EBT customer service line (the number on the back of your card) if you prefer notifications that way. And if you're planning early morning grocery shopping, keep in mind that not all stores accept EBT at self-checkout terminals early in the morning - some require a cashier to be present. Learned that one the hard way at 6 AM! 😅 Hope this helps anyone else trying to figure out the timing!

•Thanks for sharing your LA County experience! The point about stores not accepting EBT at self-checkout early in the morning is something I never would have thought of - that's really practical advice. I'm in Kern County and just started receiving CalFresh benefits this month (my deposit day is the 5th). I was definitely one of those people planning to do my grocery shopping at like 6 AM thinking I'd beat the crowds, but now I know to check which stores have cashiers available that early or wait until regular hours. The text alert option through the customer service line sounds convenient too - I like having multiple ways to stay updated. It's really reassuring to hear that even during busy periods, the benefits are still there by 5 AM at the latest across different counties!

I'm in Ventura County and have been receiving CalFresh for about 4 months now. My benefits always show up between 4:00-4:30 AM on my deposit day (the 6th). I actually discovered this by accident - I work night shifts sometimes and happened to check the app around 4:15 AM one morning and there they were! What's been really helpful for me is creating a little routine around it. I check the ebtEDGE app when I wake up, then I plan my grocery trip for later that morning when stores are fully staffed. I've learned that some of the smaller markets in my area don't even open until 7 AM, so there's no rush to be shopping at dawn anyway. For anyone just starting with CalFresh - don't stress about the exact timing! The benefits will definitely be there by the time you're ready to do your normal grocery shopping. And definitely download the official app, it makes everything so much easier than trying to find an ATM every time you want to check your balance.

•Thanks for sharing your Ventura County experience! I really appreciate the practical advice about creating a routine around checking the app and not rushing to shop at dawn. I'm completely new to CalFresh - just got approved yesterday actually - and this whole thread has been incredibly helpful for setting expectations. My deposit date is the 4th, so I'll get to test out all this advice next month! It's reassuring to hear from so many people across different counties that the timing is pretty consistent in that 4-5 AM window. The point about smaller markets not opening until 7 AM is something I hadn't considered either. I was getting caught up in the idea of shopping as soon as the benefits hit, but you're right that there's no real rush. I'm definitely downloading the ebtEDGE app today so I'll be all set when my first deposit comes through. This community is amazing - thank you everyone for sharing such detailed and helpful experiences!

I'm in San Bernardino County and have been getting CalFresh for about 2 years now. My benefits deposit between 3:30-4:45 AM on my assigned day (the 9th). Like so many others here, I also tried the midnight thing when I first started! 😂 One tip I haven't seen mentioned yet - if you're planning to shop early, call ahead to make sure the store's EBT system is working. I've had a couple times where I got to the store around 7 AM and their card readers were down for maintenance. Most grocery stores have their systems back online by 8 AM, but it's worth checking if you're making a special early trip. Also, for anyone new to this - your CalFresh case worker should have given you a paper with your deposit date when you got approved. If you can't find it or aren't sure, you can call the customer service number on your EBT card and they'll tell you which day of the month your benefits come. The day is based on the last digit of your case number and never changes unless there's some major issue with your case. This thread has been so helpful - it's nice to see real experiences from people across different counties confirming that 4-5 AM seems to be the magic window statewide!

•This is such great practical advice about calling ahead to check if the EBT system is working! I never would have thought of that potential issue. I'm brand new to this whole process - literally just joined this community today after getting my CalFresh approval letter. My case worker did give me that paper you mentioned with my deposit date (the 14th), but honestly I was so overwhelmed with all the paperwork that I didn't pay much attention to the timing details. Reading through this entire thread has been like getting a masterclass in how CalFresh actually works in real life versus what the official paperwork tells you. The 4-5 AM window seems pretty consistent across everyone's experiences, which is really reassuring. I'm definitely saving your tip about calling stores ahead of time - that could save a lot of frustration on my first shopping trip! Thanks for sharing your 2 years of experience, it really helps us newcomers know what to expect.

I'm new to this community and just got approved for CalFresh last week! This entire thread has been incredibly informative - I had the exact same question about timing since my deposit date is the 11th. Reading everyone's experiences from different counties showing that consistent 4-5 AM window is really reassuring. I was definitely planning to check at midnight like the original poster, so you all saved me from staying up unnecessarily! I've already downloaded the ebtEDGE app based on all the recommendations here. The tip about some stores not accepting EBT at self-checkout early in the morning is something I never would have considered. Also really appreciate the advice about calling ahead to make sure the store's EBT system is working if you're planning an early shopping trip. This community is amazing - getting real experiences from actual users is so much more helpful than the vague "benefits will be available on your assigned day" that the official sources give you. •Welcome to the community and congratulations on getting approved for CalFresh! It's great that you found this thread so helpful - I was in the exact same boat when I first joined a few months ago. You're smart to download the ebtEDGE app right away - it really does make everything so much easier than having to find an ATM every time you want to check your balance. Since your deposit date is the 11th, you'll get to experience all the advice shared here firsthand soon! Don't worry about staying up until midnight - based on everyone's experiences, you can just check the app when you wake up and your benefits will be there. This community has been such a lifesaver for navigating all the practical aspects of CalFresh that they don't really explain in the paperwork. Welcome aboard!

This has been such a helpful thread! I'm also new to CalFresh (just got approved two weeks ago) and was wondering about this exact timing issue. My deposit date is the 13th, so I haven't experienced it yet, but based on everyone's shared experiences, it sounds like that 4-5 AM window is pretty reliable across different counties. I really appreciate all the practical tips people have shared - downloading the ebtEDGE app, calling stores ahead to check their EBT systems, and knowing that some places don't accept EBT at self-checkout early in the morning. These are the kinds of real-world details you don't get from the official paperwork! It's also reassuring to know that even during busy periods or holidays, the benefits are still there by morning. I was definitely one of those people planning to stay up until midnight, so thank you all for saving me from that unnecessary wait. Looking forward to my first deposit and putting all this advice to use!

•Welcome to CalFresh and this community! It's so great to see how helpful everyone has been in sharing their real experiences. As someone who's been on CalFresh for about a year now, I can confirm that the 4-5 AM window is pretty spot on - I'm in Contra Costa County and mine consistently shows up around 4:20 AM on my deposit day (the 2nd). You're definitely making the right choice downloading the ebtEDGE app ahead of time! One small tip I'd add is to make sure you have your EBT card number handy when you set up the app - you'll need it for registration. Also, once you get your first deposit, don't be surprised if you feel a little overwhelmed planning your first big grocery trip with CalFresh benefits. Take your time and maybe make a list beforehand of what you need most. This community is always here if you have questions about eligible items or anything else that comes up. Good luck with your first deposit on the 13th!

•Welcome to CalFresh and this community! It's so exciting to see another newcomer who found this thread as helpful as I did. I just got approved a couple weeks ago myself and was in the exact same boat - planning to check at midnight until everyone here shared their real experiences. The consistency of that 4-5 AM window across different counties is really reassuring, isn't it? You're smart to get the ebtEDGE app set up early. I did the same thing and it's been great having it ready to go. The store tips about calling ahead and the self-checkout restrictions are game-changers too - I would have definitely run into those issues without this community's advice! Since we're both so new to this, feel free to reach out if you have any questions as you navigate your first deposit. It's nice to connect with someone who's at the same stage in this process. Good luck on the 16th!

•Welcome to CalFresh and this community! Congratulations on getting approved - that's such a relief when it finally comes through! As someone who's also relatively new to this (got approved about 6 months ago), I can totally relate to that midnight plan. I did the exact same thing my first month and learned the hard way that it's a waste of sleep! 😅 The 4-5 AM window really is consistent - I'm in San Mateo County and mine hits around 4:30 AM on my day (the 8th). You're being super smart getting the ebtEDGE app ready ahead of time. One thing I'd add to all the great advice here is to maybe do a practice run to your grocery store during the hours you're planning to shop, just to get familiar with their layout and EBT process before your first big trip. It can feel a bit overwhelming the first time! This community has been amazing for answering all those little questions that come up. Welcome aboard and good luck on the 18th!
