CalFresh benefits not loading on EBT card after income reporting - anyone else experiencing delays?

I reported a small income change on my SAR7 last month (got a few more hours at my job, about $320 more monthly). My caseworker said everything was processed correctly and I'd still qualify for CalFresh, just at a slightly reduced amount. But it's already the 7th of the month and NOTHING has loaded onto my EBT card yet! I called the automated line and it just says my balance is $0. This has never happened before - benefits always load on the 1st. I've tried calling the county office for 3 days but can't get through to a human. My kids are asking why there's no food in the fridge and I'm seriously panicking. Has anyone else experienced payment delays after reporting income changes? Is this normal or did something go wrong with my case?

How long did you have to wait? Did your benefits eventually show up or did you have to call them?

This sounds like what happened to me after my recertification. When you report an income change, sometimes they need to process additional verification before releasing benefits, even if your caseworker said everything was good. The most likely issue is that your case is in a pending verification status but nobody notified you. You need to speak with someone at your county office as soon as possible to determine what's holding up your benefits.

Thank you for the explanation. That makes sense. But I'm so frustrated because I've called like 15 times and keep getting stuck in the automated system. Do you know if there's any other way to reach someone?

I went through something similar after reporting a job change. Turns out they put my case on hold because they needed my last two pay stubs to verify the new income amount, but the notice got sent to my old address! Check your BenefitsCal account if you have one - sometimes notices appear there even if you don't get them in the mail. Also, if you're having trouble reaching someone at the county office, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr that helped me get through. Their website is claimyr.com and they have this video demo: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 showing how it works. It helped me skip the hold time and get a callback from a real person who fixed my issue in like 10 minutes. So much better than calling repeatedly and getting nowhere.

does that service cost money tho? not trying to pay just to talk to someone who my taxes already pay for lol

Thank you! I'll check BenefitsCal right now. I didn't even think about the possibility that they might need additional verification. And I might try that Claimyr service if I can't get through tomorrow - at this point I'm desperate enough to try anything.

When you report an income change above the Income Reporting Threshold (IRT), it triggers a complete recalculation of your benefits. Even though your worker initially said everything was processed, the system might have flagged your case for additional verification. Here's what you need to check: 1. Log into BenefitsCal and look for any notices or tasks (especially ones requesting additional verification) 2. Check if your Quarterly Report (QR7) or Semi-Annual Report (SAR7) was fully processed 3. Verify if your income change put you close to the income limit for your household size If you can't find anything, you absolutely need to speak with your eligibility worker. With income changes, benefits can sometimes be delayed as they recalculate, but they shouldn't just stop without notification. This is likely a processing error that needs to be fixed manually.

Thank you for the detailed explanation. I just checked BenefitsCal and found a notice from last week asking for my most recent pay stubs! It says my case is "pending verification" which explains why no benefits loaded. I never got this notice in the mail. I'll upload the pay stubs right now. Do you know how long it usually takes for benefits to load after providing verification?

This EXACT thing happend to me!!! The county is ALWAYS messing up peoples benefits. They dont care that familys are STARVING while they take there sweet time "processing" things that should of been done already!!! And just wait, when they finally fix it they'll probably give you some BS excuse about "system errors" or "high volume of cases" instead of admitting THEY screwed up!!! I had to go to a food bank for 2 weeks because of their mistakes last year. The system is BROKEN!!!!

so true... its like they make it complicated on purpose just to discourage ppl from using benefits they deserve. i got cut off 2x last year over paperwork they never even sent me

UPDATE: I found the verification request in BenefitsCal (never got it in the mail) and uploaded my pay stubs this morning. Just called using that Claimyr service someone recommended and actually got through to a person! They confirmed my case was on hold pending verification and said they've now received my paystubs. Benefits should load within 3 business days. So relieved but still frustrated this wasn't communicated clearly. Going to sign up for electronic notifications so this doesn't happen again. Thanks everyone for your help!

Great news! Yes, definitely sign up for electronic notifications - they're much more reliable than mail. Also, for future reference, whenever you report an income change, ask your worker specifically if they need verification documents and when your benefits will be available. Getting these details upfront can save a lot of stress.
