CalFresh benefits missing and county office closed for Labor Day weekend - what to do?

I'm freaking out right now. I was supposed to get my CalFresh benefits loaded yesterday but nothing showed up on my EBT card. I've been calling the county office all day but keep getting a message saying 'our systems are currently down for maintenance' then it hangs up! I drove to the office in San Bernardino and there was a sign on the door saying computer systems are down through the weekend. With Labor Day on Monday, that means I can't talk to anyone until TUESDAY! My fridge is practically empty and I have two kids to feed. Has anyone else in SoCal having this issue? Is there an emergency number to call when the regular systems are down? This is seriously stressful.

This is so frustrating! Did you try calling the EBT card customer service number? I tried that too but they just said it's a county issue and they can't help.

I'm having the same problem in LA County. Benefits were supposed to load on the 1st (my usual date) but nothing came through. I called the state EBT customer service (not the county) at 877-328-9677 and they confirmed it's a statewide system issue affecting multiple counties, especially in Southern California. They said benefits should be available by Tuesday at the latest, but that doesn't help for the holiday weekend.

Thanks for sharing the info. Tuesday feels like forever away when you're worried about feeding your kids. Did they say anything about emergency assistance for people who need food now?

This issue happens sometimes during system updates. If you're in an emergency situation, you can try these steps: 1. Call 211 - they can direct you to emergency food resources 2. Visit a local food bank - most are open on Saturdays 3. If you have less than $100 in your bank account, you might qualify for emergency aid even with the systems down For what it's worth, when this happened last year, benefits were loaded early Monday morning even though the offices were closed for the holiday. They can process the payments even when the customer service systems are down.

Thank you for these suggestions! I'll definitely call 211 today. I didn't know they could help with emergency food. Really hope the benefits come through on Monday like you said.

Have you tried using Claimyr to reach someone? When the regular phone lines give you the runaround, they can often get you through to a real person. I was in a similar situation a few months ago and used their service at claimyr.com - they got me through to an actual caseworker even when the main line said systems were down. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 that shows how it works. In my case, the worker was able to process an emergency benefit load even though the main systems were having issues.

I've never heard of this service before. Does it actually work when they say the systems are completely down? I'm willing to try anything at this point.

Yes, it worked for me during the last outage. Even though the main phone system says everything is down, there are usually some county workers who have access to emergency systems. Claimyr helps you get to those specific workers instead of just the general queue.

im in san diego county an my benefits came thru normal yesterday so maybe its just certain counties? did u check ur balance online sometimez the card dont work but the money is actually there

I checked the app, the website, and called the balance number. All show $0 balance. Glad yours came through though. Makes me think it might be fixable if some counties are working.

This sounds like the scheduled system maintenance they announced two weeks ago. There was a notice on BenefitsCal.com about it, but they didn't make it very obvious. I remember it said something about a 72-hour upgrade affecting transaction processing but that benefits would be restored by Tuesday, September 7th. I know that doesn't help your immediate situation, but at least it confirms that it's a planned issue and your benefits aren't permanently affected. For immediate help, you should contact your local food bank. Most have emergency provisions for exactly this situation. In San Bernardino, I believe you can contact Feeding America Riverside|San Bernardino at (951) 359-4757 - they usually have weekend hours and emergency distribution.

Thank you for the food bank info! I had no idea about the maintenance announcement - I never got any notice about it. I check my BenefitsCal account regularly but must have missed it somehow. It's really frustrating they don't text or email about something this important.

They're supposed to send texts/emails for major system outages, but the notification system is separate from the benefits system. If your contact info isn't updated or if you didn't opt-in for alerts, you might miss these announcements. For future reference, always check your BenefitsCal account around the 15th of each month - that's when they typically post notices about upcoming maintenance.

This happened to me back in June!!! I had to go to a food bank for the weekend. Which was humiliating because I already get CalFresh but the volunteers were nice. The most frustrating part is that when benefits finally came back Tuesday, they acted like it was no big deal. Like we're just supposed to magically find food for 4 days with no warning???

right??? they dont care at all about us. my worker once told me "oh just go to the food bank" like im not already getting benefits cuz i NEED THEM

I'm sorry you went through this too. Did they at least give you the full benefit amount when it finally went through? I'm worried they'll prorate it or something because of the delay.

Quick update for everyone in this thread - I just got a text alert from the CalFresh office stating benefits delayed by the system outage will be deposited by Monday 9am, even though offices are closed for Labor Day. They're prioritizing getting benefits loaded before resolving other systems issues. Hope this helps ease some stress for the weekend.

That's such a relief to hear! Thank you for sharing this update. I haven't received any text yet but hopefully that means mine will come through Monday too. Going to try the food bank tomorrow just in case, but this makes me feel so much better.

Just got the same text! Really wish they'd sent this information out BEFORE people panicked, but at least they're fixing it faster than Tuesday.
