CalFresh EBT emergency allotment 'Sun Bucks' coming back in 2025?

Hey fellow CalFresh folks! I just heard from my cousin that those extra 'sun bucks' might be coming back to our EBT cards soon? She said her caseworker mentioned something about emergency allotments returning for a few months in 2025. I've been struggling since they stopped the extra benefits after COVID. Has anyone else heard about this or gotten any official info about extra funds being added back to our CalFresh benefits? My budget is super tight and even $100 extra per month would make a huge difference for my kids and me.

I'm pretty sure your cousin is misinformed. The emergency allotments (what some people called "sun bucks" or "extra bucks") were part of the pandemic response and officially ended in March 2023. CalFresh benefits returned to standard calculation methods based on household size, income, and expenses. I haven't seen any announcements about bringing back emergency allotments for 2025. What might be happening is the annual cost-of-living adjustment that usually happens in October, which slightly increases benefit amounts to account for inflation.

Thanks for clarifying. That's disappointing 😔 She seemed so sure! Maybe she misunderstood something about the regular annual increase? Do you know approximately how much the October adjustments usually add? Even a little bit more would help.

I'm in Los Angeles County. Maybe it is county-specific? But now I'm thinking she probably just misunderstood something her worker said. Ugh, I got all excited for nothing!

What your cousin might be referring to is the proposed California Food Assistance Program (CFAP) expansion that's been discussed for 2025, which would provide additional state-funded benefits to some households that don't currently qualify for the maximum federal benefit. It's not the same as the pandemic emergency allotments, and it won't affect everyone on CalFresh. There's also the normal October 1st benefit adjustment that happens every year based on the cost of food. For 2025, that's expected to increase benefits by about 3-4%, so a household getting $500 might see an extra $15-20 per month.

Thank you for explaining! That CFAP expansion sounds interesting - do you know who would qualify? And that October adjustment seems pretty small compared to how prices keep rising, but I guess any increase helps.

This system is RIDICULOUS!!! They give us extra when the whole country was getting stimulus checks and unemployment bonuses, then they YANK IT AWAY when inflation is at record highs and food costs 30% MORE than before!!! My family of 4 gets $650/month which barely lasts 3 weeks now. When are they going to understand people are STARVING because benefits don't match actual costs?!?! The so-called "adjustments" are A JOKE compared to real grocery prices!!

I feel ya. Prices are crazy now! Did u try getting ur benefits recalculated? I reported higher rent and utilities last month and got an extra $75 added to my monthly amount. Worth checking if u haven't maxed out the shelter deduction.

I actually heard something similar from someone at my son's school, but they were talking about a one-time supplement that might come through in early 2025, not a permanent return to emergency allotments. I've been trying to reach my county worker to verify but keep getting stuck in the phone system. After 45 minutes waiting yesterday, I got disconnected right when I was about to speak to someone! So frustrating when you're just trying to get accurate information about your benefits.

Try using Claimyr to get through to a CalFresh worker faster. I was having the same issue with endless holds and disconnects until someone here recommended it. You enter your number on their website (claimyr.com) and they call you back when they've connected with a real person at the office. I got through in 20 minutes instead of waiting for hours. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8. Seriously saved me so much frustration when I needed to verify my recertification status.

BTW my worker also said to make sure were all reporting any income changes on our SAR7 forms cuz they're doing more checks now. if u dont report everything u could get an overpayment notice and have to pay stuff back

Good reminder! I always get so anxious about the SAR7 forms. Last time I accidentally forgot to include some side gig income and got a scary notice. Had to set up a repayment plan for $340. Never making that mistake again!

Coming back to provide some accurate information: For 2025, what IS changing is that CalFresh will have a new "Standard Medical Deduction" option for elderly and disabled household members. If you have a disabled or elderly person in your household who spends more than $35 per month on medical expenses, you might qualify for higher benefits through this deduction. There's also going to be an increase in the standard utility allowance (SUA) which could help some households get more benefits if they pay for heating or cooling separately from rent. These aren't "emergency allotments" but they could result in benefit increases for certain households.

That's helpful to know! My mom might be moving in with us next year and she's on disability. Sounds like I should definitely mention her medical expenses when I update my household info. Thanks for sharing these details!

Does anyone remember how much the sun bucks actually were? I feel like my family got like an extra $400/month during covid but my friend says it was more like $200. I'm not good at keeping track of that stuff lol

The emergency allotments varied by household size and situation, but every household received at least $95 extra per month, with many receiving much more. The extra amount was calculated to bring your total benefits up to the maximum amount for your household size. So if your regular calculation already gave you $200 below the maximum, you'd get $200 extra. If you were only $50 below maximum, you'd still get $95 (the minimum emergency allotment). For a family of 4, the maximum monthly benefit during 2022 was around $835, so some families saw their benefits double during that period.

$12?! What a JOKE! My grocery bill went up more than that in a SINGLE WEEK. These "adjustments" are insulting when families are struggling to put food on the table. The system is BROKEN!!
