Are K-12 students getting the 4.0 P-EBT benefits in 2025? Can't find clear info

Does anyone know if they're giving the 4.0 P-EBT for kids in school this year? My daughter's school sent home some paper about eligibility but I lost it, and when I called the school office they said to check online but I can't find anything that says yes or no for 2025. I thought they ended this after covid but then my neighbor said her kids got something in the mail about it last week? We qualify for reduced lunch if that matters. Thx!

Yep, P-EBT 4.0 is active for the 2024-2025 school year for K-12 students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program. They finally approved the extension. Your daughter should be eligible if you're on reduced lunch. They're sending out cards to new recipients and reloading existing P-EBT cards for returning students. Check your mail carefully - the envelope is pretty plain and easy to miss. Benefits are around $175 per eligible month depending on your school's specific schedule. You can also check BenefitsCal and set up a P-EBT account, or call the P-EBT helpline at 877-328-9677 (though good luck getting through).

Omg thank u!! I'm gonna go check my mail pile right now, I throw away so much junk mail I might have missed it. Do you know if it looks the same as the old card from 2021? My daughter had one then.

I spent 2 HOURS on hold with the P-EBT line yesterday trying to ask this EXACT question!!! And then they just disconnected me!! This system is BROKEN. My kids' school said they submitted all the eligible students' info months ago but we haven't received ANYTHING. Last time they did this, half the families at our school never got their cards at all. So frustrating!!!!

I had the same problem trying to reach them! After trying for days I found a service called Claimyr that got me through to a real person at the P-EBT helpline in about 15 minutes. They call and wait on hold for you then connect you when someone picks up. Saved me so much stress! Check out their website claimyr.com - they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8

This is actually not correct information. P-EBT 4.0 is only for children under 6 who receive SNAP/CalFresh. The K-12 program ended after the summer 2023 payments. What your neighbor probably received was information about applying for CalFresh, not P-EBT. The only exception is for families who never received their entitled benefits from the earlier phases.

That's not right - I literally just received confirmation from my county worker last week. P-EBT 4.0 includes both the under-6 SNAP children AND K-12 students on free/reduced lunch. California got approved for both. The implementation is just happening in phases, with the under-6 group first and K-12 starting to roll out now. The confusion is because the USDA and California took forever to finalize the plan after the legislation passed.

Thanks for confirming! We already qualified for reduced lunch back in September so that part should be ok. Did they send a new card or use the old one from previous years?

P-EBT 4.0 for the 2024-2025 school year includes K-12 students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals. The benefit amount is calculated based on the number of school days and absences reported by your school district. For accurate information, I'd recommend: 1. Check if you have an existing P-EBT card from previous rounds 2. Create an account on the P-EBT Portal at ca.p-ebt.org if you haven't already 3. Make sure your mailing address is current with your school 4. If you can't get through on the P-EBT hotline, try contacting your county CalFresh office directly as they can sometimes access the P-EBT system The cards can take 2-3 months to arrive after eligibility is determined, so there may still be a wait even if your child is eligible.

Wait does this mean we need to report when our kids are absent from school? I didn't know that was part of it, my son has missed like two weeks this year from being sick

Oh I was just wondering about this too because my son's friend got his but we didn't get anything! I think maybe it depends what school district your in? We're in Sacramento Unified and they always seem to be behind on everything lol. But my sister's kids go to school in Elk Grove and they got their cards already. Does anyone know if there's a number to call to check on the status?

Yes, there are significant differences in timing based on school districts. The official P-EBT Helpline is 877-328-9677, but be prepared for very long wait times. You can also check the status through the P-EBT Portal at ca.p-ebt.org if you create an account. For Sacramento Unified specifically, they've been processing in alphabetical batches, so your last name might be in a later batch than your sister's family.

@OP - to answer your question about the cards, they're using the same P-EBT cards as before for returning students. If you still have your daughter's card from 2021, keep it! They should reload that one. If you lost it, you'll need to request a replacement through the P-EBT Portal or by calling the helpline. Just know they're VERY slow at sending replacements - could take 6-8 weeks.

Ugh I'm pretty sure we threw that card away after we used up all the money. Do you know if I can still get the new benefits somehow or are we just out of luck now?

If you've lost your P-EBT card, you can request a replacement. Here's what to do: 1. Call the P-EBT Helpline at 877-328-9677 (be prepared for long wait times) 2. Or go to the P-EBT Portal at ca.p-ebt.org and report the card lost 3. The system will deactivate the old card and send a new one 4. The new card will have all available benefits loaded You won't lose eligibility just because you lost the card. The replacement process is frustrating but your child's benefits will be preserved.
