Will CalFresh P-EBT 4.0 benefits get reloaded or is it one-time only?
I just received my P-EBT 4.0 card in the mail yesterday, and I'm trying to figure out if benefits will be reloaded onto this card in the future or if it's just a one-time benefit payment. I don't want to throw the card away if there will be more deposits coming. The letter that came with it wasn't very clear about whether this is ongoing or just a single payment for the 2024-2025 school year. Does anyone have definite information about this? I have two elementary school kids who qualify for free lunch, if that matters. Thanks in advance for any help!

its a one time thing now. my kids got the p-ebt 4.0 last month and the paper said its 1 payment covering the whole school year. dont throw ur card away tho cuz they might use same cards again for future programs

•Thanks! I was confused because with the older P-EBT cards, they had multiple payments over several months. Appreciate the info - I'll definitely keep the card then.

KEEP THE CARD!! I threw away my P-EBT 3.0 card thinking it was done and then they started that summer program and I had to wait 6 WEEKS for a replacement!!! Learned my lesson the hard way

•Oh no, that sounds awful! Thanks for the warning. I'll definitely hold onto it now.

The P-EBT 4.0 program is structured differently than previous versions. It provides a single lump-sum payment of $402 per eligible child for the entire 2024-2025 school year. This is specifically for children who would have received free or reduced-price meals through the National School Lunch Program. While the current plan is just one payment, I strongly recommend keeping the card for three reasons: 1. If any benefits are not used within 274 days, they will be removed from the card (benefits don't expire immediately) 2. If additional pandemic or emergency assistance programs are implemented, they often use existing cards 3. If there are any adjustments or supplements to the program, they would be loaded to the same card Also, remember P-EBT is separate from regular CalFresh benefits, so this doesn't affect your normal EBT card if you have one.

Hey there, I had the same question when my kids got their cards! I called the P-EBT hotline but was on hold forever. I ended up using Claimyr.com to get through - they have this service that calls and waits on hold for you, then calls you when a real person gets on the line. They connected me with someone who confirmed it's a single payment for this round. I saved like an hour of hold time! They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/eZ19FHRETv8?si=_CXnXqNXbLl26WB8 Definitely keep the card though. The rep said even though it's one payment now, if they extend the program or add summer benefits, they'll use the same card.

•OMG waiting on hold with these benefit programs is THE WORST. I spent 3 hours trying to get through to someone about my CalFresh recertification last month. Thanks for sharing this tip - I'm definitely going to try this next time!

I've been through all the P-EBT phases with my kids, and I can confirm what others have said - P-EBT 4.0 is currently designed as a single payment. However, based on past experience, I've noticed these programs often get extended or modified. During P-EBT 3.0, they suddenly announced summer benefits and used the same cards. Definitely keep your card for at least a year. Store it somewhere safe with a note about what it is, because I guarantee you'll forget which card is which if you have multiple benefit cards (speaking from experience!

•Thank you for sharing your experience! That's exactly the kind of insight I was hoping for. I'll put the card in our important documents folder with a label.

I received different amounts for my two kids - one got $402 and the other got $272. Anyone know why there's a difference? They're at the same school and both get free lunch. Now I'm wondering if the lower amount one will get more loaded later?

•The amount can vary based on when your child was enrolled in school or when they became eligible for free/reduced lunch. If one child wasn't eligible for the full school year, they get a prorated amount. You could call the P-EBT hotline to ask about the specific calculation for your kids.

•That makes sense! My younger one started kindergarten late because he was sick for the first few weeks. Thanks for explaining!
