Anyone know if P-EBT benefits for school children are getting reloaded soon?
Hi everyone, I'm a single dad with two kids in elementary school. We qualified for P-EBT during previous years, and it was such a huge help for our grocery budget. My kids' school sent home some confusing paperwork about free lunch programs and mentioned something about P-EBT possibly continuing, but I can't tell if they're actually reloading the cards for the 2025 school year. My oldest daughter's card has had a zero balance for months now. Has anyone received any recent deposits or heard anything official about when/if they're reloading the P-EBT cards this year? The school office wasn't very helpful when I called.

•Really? That's interesting your neighbor got something. Do you know if they had to apply again or if it was automatic? I'm worried we missed some paperwork.

The P-EBT program for the 2024-2025 school year is still active but with some changes. It's a common misunderstanding, but P-EBT is separate from CalFresh (though they both use EBT cards). For this school year, they're issuing benefits in quarterly batches rather than monthly. If your children qualify for free or reduced-price school meals through the National School Lunch Program, they should automatically receive P-EBT benefits. The first batch for this school year was supposed to be loaded in October 2025, with the next batch coming in January 2026. Some counties are experiencing delays though. You don't need to submit a new application if your children already qualify for free/reduced school meals.

•Thank you so much for that clear explanation! I didn't realize they switched to quarterly payments or that it was tied to the free lunch program qualification. My kids do get free lunch at school, so I guess we just need to wait for the county to process everything. Really appreciate your help!

Make sure your address is up to date with the school! I learned the hard way that P-EBT cards for new school years sometimes get mailed to old addresses if you've moved. If your kids are using the same P-EBT cards from previous years, then what the previous person said about quarterly loading is correct. But if they issue new cards each year in your county, you might want to check with the school secretary (not just the front desk person) to make sure they have your current mailing address on file. The school lunch program coordinator might have more information than the general office staff.

•THIS!!!! We moved last summer and didn't get our card until I went to the school and raised hell about it. The office lady kept saying 'we don't handle those cards' but turns out they SUBMIT THE INFO that determines where cards get sent!!!!!

My kid's P-EBT just got reloaded yesterday actually! $510 for the quarter. We're in Los Angeles County. I was surprised because I hadn't heard anything about it coming. Maybe check your balance again?

•Wait, are you sure that's P-EBT and not regular CalFresh? We get both and sometimes I mix them up on the balance checking app. P-EBT should show as a separate account from regular CalFresh benefits. $510 sounds more like a monthly CalFresh amount for a household with kids than a P-EBT amount. Just wanted to check since they're different programs with different funding sources, even though they both use EBT cards.

I called the P-EBT hotline last week after waiting for 2 hours (!!) and they told me the new benefits are starting to roll out but it's being done alphabetically by last name in some counties. If your last name starts with A-M, you should see it this month, and N-Z will be next month. But honestly, I've learned not to trust anything until I actually see the money on the card. The system is so frustrating - my kids qualify for free meals but I always have to chase down these benefits.

•That is truly impressive patience to wait on hold for 2 hours! I've never been able to get through to anyone on the P-EBT hotline. Every time I've called, I get stuck in an endless loop of automated messages or get disconnected. Did you call at a specific time of day to get through?

•Yes, you can qualify for both CalFresh and P-EBT - they're separate programs. If your children's school participates in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) where all students get free meals regardless of income, then your children should automatically qualify for P-EBT benefits! That's actually good news because you don't have to submit any additional paperwork. The school should have already submitted the necessary information to the state.

Something to keep in mind is that the P-EBT program's existence depends on federal funding and approvals. The current program was authorized through the end of the 2025-26 school year, but there's always the possibility of changes. What I've found helpful is signing up for email/text alerts from the California Department of Social Services website so you get notified about these benefits directly rather than relying on schools (which often have outdated or incomplete information).

•That's a really good idea about signing up for alerts directly. Do you happen to have the link for that? I've looked around the CDSS website before and got lost in all the different pages.

•Here you go: https://www.cdss.ca.gov/inforesources/cdss-programs/calworks/subscriber. This page lets you sign up for alerts about various programs including P-EBT. Just make sure you check the boxes for all the programs you want updates about. Hope this helps!
