Illinois Secretary of State UCC filing fees - anyone know current rates?

Hey everyone, I need to submit several UCC-1 filings in Illinois and want to budget properly. Does anyone know the current Illinois Secretary of State UCC filing fees? I'm handling about 8 different equipment loans and need to file initial statements plus a couple amendments. Last time I filed was 2022 and I think fees were around $25-30 but not sure if they've changed. Also wondering if there's bulk pricing or if each filing is individual cost. The SOS website isn't super clear on this and I'm trying to get quotes ready for clients. Any recent filers who can share what they paid?

Filed 3 UCC-1s in Illinois just last month. Current fee is $30 per initial filing, $25 for amendments/continuations. No bulk discounts that I know of. The online portal charges your card immediately when you submit.

Thanks! That's helpful. So for 8 initial UCC-1s I'm looking at $240 plus any amendments. Did you use the electronic filing system or paper?

0 coins

All electronic through their portal. Much faster processing, usually same day acceptance if you file before 3pm.

Be careful with debtor names! I had 2 rejections last week because of minor name discrepancies between my UCC-1 and the debtor's articles of incorporation. Cost me an extra $50 in refiling fees plus delays.

Oh no, what kind of discrepancies? I always worry about getting the exact legal name right.

One had 'LLC' vs 'L.L.C.' and another had a missing comma in the business name. Illinois is really picky about exact matches.

This is exactly why I started using Certana.ai's document checker. You upload your charter docs and UCC-1 together and it flags any name mismatches before filing. Saved me probably $200 in rejected filing fees this year.

Current Illinois UCC fees as of 2025: UCC-1 initial = $30, UCC-3 amendment/continuation = $25, UCC-3 termination = $25. Search fees are $10 per debtor name. These haven't changed since 2023.

Perfect breakdown, thank you! Do you know if they accept credit cards or just ACH?

Ethan Wilson

•

Both credit cards and ACH. Credit cards process immediately, ACH takes 1-2 business days but no processing fee.

Wait, there's no processing fee for ACH? The portal charged me $2.50 extra last time I used my card.

•

Correct, ACH is just the filing fee. Credit cards have the convenience fee added by the payment processor.

ugh why does every state have different fees?? Wisconsin is like $20, Indiana is $25, now Illinois is $30. Makes multi-state deals so annoying to budget.

I know! I do filings in 5 different states and have to keep a spreadsheet of all the different fee structures.

At least Illinois processes quickly. I've waited 3 weeks for acceptances in other states.

Pro tip: if you're doing multiple filings for the same debtor, double-check your collateral descriptions are consistent across all the UCC-1s. Illinois rejected mine because I had slightly different equipment descriptions for the same assets.

Good point. I'm filing for different pieces of equipment but want to make sure the descriptions don't overlap or conflict.

Yeah, be specific but not so specific that minor model differences cause issues. 'All equipment' is too broad, but serial numbers can be problematic if they change.

Another reason I love that Certana.ai tool - it checks for inconsistent collateral descriptions across multiple filings. Caught an overlap I didn't notice that could have voided priority.

Filed 12 UCC-1s last quarter in Illinois, total was $360 plus the credit card fees. Portal worked fine, got confirmation emails within an hour for all of them.

That matches the $30 each that others mentioned. Did you have any rejections or issues?

0 coins

Nope, all went through clean. I spent extra time verifying debtor names against Secretary of State business records first.

The Illinois portal is actually pretty user-friendly compared to some other states. Just make sure you have your debtor info exactly right before submitting because amendments to fix mistakes cost $25 each.

Yeah, I learned that lesson the hard way in another state. Always worth double-checking everything before hitting submit.

Seriously! I had to file a UCC-3 amendment because I misspelled a street name. $25 mistake.

This is why I always run documents through verification first. The small cost of using something like Certana.ai's checker is nothing compared to amendment fees and potential lien priority issues.

btw if you're filing continuation statements, remember Illinois requires them within 6 months before the 5-year expiration. Don't wait until the last minute like I almost did!

Good reminder! These are all new filings but I'll need to calendar the continuation dates for 2030.

0 coins

Yeah set calendar reminders now. Nothing worse than having a lien lapse because you forgot to continue it.

Illinois actually allows continuations up to 6 months early, so you have a good window if you stay on top of it.

For 8 filings budget around $240-280 depending on payment method. The portal is reliable but always keep copies of your confirmation emails - you'll need the filing numbers for future amendments or terminations.

Will do. I always save confirmations to a dedicated folder. Thanks for all the help everyone!

No problem! Illinois is one of the easier states to work with once you know their requirements.

One more thing - if you're unsure about any debtor name formatting, you can do a UCC search first for $10 to see how similar companies are listed in their system. Sometimes helps avoid rejections.

Smart idea! Especially for the couple of newer LLCs where I'm not 100% sure about punctuation in their registered names.

Exactly. The search results show you the exact format Illinois expects, takes the guesswork out of it.

Just wanted to jump in as someone new to UCC filings - this thread has been incredibly helpful! I'm preparing to do my first Illinois UCC-1 filing next month and was completely lost on fees and procedures. The $30 per initial filing info and tips about exact name matching are exactly what I needed. Quick question - for someone doing their first filing, would you recommend doing a test search first to make sure I understand the portal before submitting the actual UCC-1? I'd rather spend $10 on a search than risk a $30 rejection and having to refile.
