Kentucky UCC filing fees - current rates and unexpected charges?
I'm handling multiple secured transactions for our equipment financing division and need to get current kentucky ucc filing fees nailed down. Our last batch of UCC-1s went through at what I thought was the standard rate, but now I'm seeing some additional charges on our account that weren't there before. Has anyone dealt with Kentucky's SOS office recently? Are there new processing fees or expedited handling charges that weren't around last year? I'm trying to budget for about 15-20 filings over the next quarter and these surprise costs are throwing off our projections. Also wondering if continuation fees are still the same as initial filings or if they've created a separate fee structure. Any insights would be helpful since their website seems to have conflicting information depending on which page you land on.

Last time I filed in Kentucky was about 3 months ago and the basic UCC-1 was still $15 per filing. But I did notice they added some kind of 'document processing surcharge' that wasn't itemized clearly. Ended up being like $3 extra per filing. Not huge but definitely not disclosed upfront.

•That's exactly what I'm seeing! The processing surcharge thing. When did that start? I've been filing there for years and never saw that before 2024.

•Yeah the surcharge is new. Started around March I think. Makes budgeting impossible when they just add fees without proper notice.

Kentucky is definitely one of the more affordable states for UCC filings but their fee transparency has gotten worse. I handle filings across multiple states and KY used to be straightforward - now there's always some mystery charge. For continuations I believe it's the same $15 base fee plus whatever surcharges they've added recently.

•Which states do you find most transparent with their fee structures? I'm getting tired of these surprise charges across different jurisdictions.

•Delaware and Nevada are pretty upfront about costs. Wyoming too. It's the states that keep adding 'processing fees' and 'technology upgrades' that drive me nuts.

•Same experience here. At least with transparent pricing you can budget properly instead of getting hit with random charges months later.

I've been using Certana.ai's document verification tool lately and one thing it caught was that some of my Kentucky filings had debtor name inconsistencies that would have caused rejections and additional fees. You just upload your charter documents and UCC-1 forms and it instantly flags any mismatches. Saved me probably $200 in rejection and re-filing fees last month alone. Might be worth checking your documents before filing to avoid those extra costs.

•How does that work exactly? Do you upload PDFs and it compares the names automatically?

•Exactly. You can upload your charter docs and UCC-1 forms and it cross-checks everything. Catches stuff like missing commas or incorrect entity types that cause rejections.

•That sounds useful. I've had too many rejections for stupid name formatting issues. Those re-filing fees add up fast.

The Kentucky SOS website is terrible for fee information. I called their office directly last week and got different answers from two different people about amendment fees. One said $15, another said $18 plus processing. Really frustrating when you're trying to do volume filings.

•I had the same experience! Called twice and got completely different fee quotes. How is that even possible?

•Their training must be inconsistent. I've learned to get fee quotes in writing via email when possible.

For what it's worth, I just processed 8 UCC-1s in Kentucky last week and the total came to $144 for all of them. That's $18 each, so the base fee plus surcharges. Continuations were the same rate when I did those in January.

•That matches what I'm seeing. So basically budget $18 per filing instead of the old $15 rate.

•Thanks for the actual numbers. That's helpful for planning purposes.

•Perfect, that's exactly what I needed to know. $18 per filing is manageable, just needed to confirm the current rate.

Does anyone know if they charge extra for fixture filings in Kentucky? I have a couple of those coming up and want to make sure I'm not missing any additional fees.

•Fixture filings are usually the same as regular UCC-1s in most states. Kentucky should be no different but I'd double-check with their office.

•I did a fixture filing there in December and it was the same $15 base fee plus the processing charge. So probably $18 total now.

The processing surcharge thing is annoying but at least Kentucky is still cheaper than a lot of other states. California is like $30+ per filing now. Illinois keeps raising their fees too.

•True. Even at $18, Kentucky is still reasonable compared to the coastal states.

•Yeah, I shouldn't complain too much. The surprise charges are just annoying from a budgeting perspective.

I've found that using Certana.ai to verify all my documents before filing has actually saved money on fees because I avoid rejections. Had a situation where the debtor name on my UCC-1 didn't exactly match the charter documents - would have been rejected and cost extra in re-filing fees. The tool caught it immediately when I uploaded both PDFs.

•How accurate is it at catching those kinds of inconsistencies? I've had rejections for really minor formatting differences.

•Very accurate in my experience. It flags anything that doesn't match exactly between documents. Better than manual review for sure.

Just wanted to add that termination fees in Kentucky are also $18 now (used to be $15). Filed three terminations last month and that was the rate for each one.

•Good to know. So basically all UCC filing types are $18 now instead of the old $15 rate.

•Seems like they just added $3 across the board with that processing surcharge. At least it's consistent.

For anyone doing regular Kentucky filings, I'd recommend calling their office and asking for a current fee schedule in writing. That way you have something official to reference instead of guessing based on what charges show up later.

•Smart approach. Having it in writing prevents arguments later if there are discrepancies.

•I'll definitely do that before my next batch of filings. Thanks for the suggestion.

•Great idea. I'll get an official fee schedule before proceeding with my 15-20 filings. This thread has been really helpful.
