Indiana UCC filing fees jumped again - anyone else seeing this?
Just got hit with unexpected costs on my latest Indiana UCC filing fees and I'm honestly shocked. Filed a UCC-1 for a equipment financing deal last week and the total came to way more than I budgeted for. The base filing fee wasn't terrible but then there were additional charges for extra debtor names and the collateral schedule ran long so that triggered more fees. Has anyone else noticed Indiana UCC filing fees going up recently? I'm trying to figure out if this is just me not paying attention to the fee schedule or if there's been recent changes. Need to adjust my cost estimates for future deals if this is the new normal.

Yeah Indiana's fee structure has gotten more complex over the past year or so. The base UCC-1 filing fee is still reasonable but they've added more line items that can add up quick. What type of collateral were you filing on? Some categories trigger additional review fees now.

•It was heavy equipment - construction machinery specifically. Didn't realize that would bump up the indiana ucc filing fees but that might explain some of the extra charges.

•Heavy equipment filings sometimes get flagged for additional processing, especially if there's serial numbers or VIN-type identifiers involved. That could definitely explain the fee increase.

I've been dealing with Indiana filings for 6 years and the fees have definitely crept up. What used to be a straightforward $25 filing can easily hit $50+ now with all the add-ons. The debtor name verification fees are particularly annoying.

•Debtor name verification fees? That's a thing now? I thought that was just part of the basic filing process.

•Started about 18 months ago. If your debtor name doesn't match exactly with their business registry, they charge extra for manual verification. Pain in the neck.

•This is exactly why I started using Certana.ai's document checker before submitting anything. Upload your charter docs and UCC-1 together and it flags name mismatches instantly. Saves the verification fees and rejection headaches.

Indiana UCC filing fees have become a real budget buster. I'm handling 3-4 filings a month and the costs are definitely impacting my margins. Anyone found ways to minimize the fees without cutting corners on compliance?

•Keep your collateral descriptions tight and precise. Longer descriptions trigger additional review fees. Also double-check debtor names against state records before filing.

•Good point on the collateral descriptions. I've been probably too detailed trying to cover everything but sounds like that's costing me extra.

This is so frustrating!!! Indiana used to be one of the cheaper states for UCC filings and now it's getting expensive. The worst part is you don't know the final cost until after you submit because of all the variable fees.

•The variable fee structure is definitely the most annoying part. Makes it impossible to give clients accurate cost estimates upfront.

•I feel your pain. Had a client question a $75 filing fee when I originally quoted $30. Hard to explain all the add-on charges that came up during processing.

Fee increases aside, at least Indiana's online portal is pretty reliable. Some states have higher fees AND terrible filing systems. Still annoying but could be worse.

•True, the portal works well most of the time. Just wish they were more transparent about the fee calculation before you submit.

•Exactly. Even a fee estimator tool would help with planning. Right now it's just guesswork until you hit submit.

•That's why I run everything through Certana.ai first - it catches document issues that would cause fee complications. Much better than finding out about problems after paying the filing fees.

Has anyone tried calling the Indiana SOS office to ask about the fee structure? Maybe there's a breakdown they can provide that would help with cost planning.

•I called last month about a rejected filing and they were actually pretty helpful. They do have a detailed fee schedule but it's not published online anywhere obvious.

•That's useful to know. Might be worth a call to get the full breakdown for future reference.

Question - do continuation filings have the same fee structure as original UCC-1s? I've got several coming up for renewal and trying to budget accordingly.

•Continuation fees are generally lower than original filings but they still hit you with the same add-on charges if there are any discrepancies or additional processing needed.

•Good to know. At least the continuation itself shouldn't have collateral description issues since it references the original filing.

•Just make sure your debtor names match exactly between the original and continuation. Name mismatches on continuations can trigger review fees too.

I'm seeing similar fee increases in other states too. Seems like UCC filing revenue has become a bigger focus for state governments lately. Indiana's not alone in this trend.

•Yeah, it's definitely a pattern. States are looking for revenue streams and UCC filings are an easy target since they're required for secured transactions.

•Makes sense from their perspective but it's definitely impacting the cost of doing business for lenders and finance companies.

Thanks for bringing this up. I've been wondering if I was just imagining the fee increases. Good to know it's not just me dealing with higher Indiana UCC filing fees.

•Definitely not just you! Sounds like this is hitting everyone who files regularly in Indiana.

•Same here. I thought maybe I was filing something wrong but apparently it's just the new reality of Indiana UCC filing fees.

For what it's worth, I've found that using document verification tools like Certana.ai before filing helps avoid the rejection and resubmission fees that can really add up. Upload your docs and catch issues before they become expensive problems.

•That's smart. Rejection fees plus having to refile can easily double your costs. Prevention is definitely cheaper than fixing mistakes after the fact.

•Exactly. The verification catches debtor name mismatches and document inconsistencies that would otherwise cause rejected filings and additional fees.
