Student unable to sign FAFSA, but parent section submitted - strange error message?
My daughter is trying to complete her 2025-2026 FAFSA application and keeps getting stuck on the signature page. Every time she tries to sign, she gets an error message saying "your information is not saved" and it won't let her proceed. The weird thing is that I had zero issues completing, signing, and submitting the parent portion of the application. Has anyone else run into this problem? What did you do to fix it? She's stressing because her school's priority deadline is coming up in two weeks.

My son had the EXACT same problem last week!! So frustrating. It turned out he needed to clear his browser cache and cookies, then restart the browser completely. For some reason the FAFSA website gets buggy when there's cached data. Also tell her to make sure she's using Chrome or Edge - we had problems with Firefox.

•Thanks, we'll try that right now. She's been using Safari, so maybe switching browsers will help. Did your son have to re-enter any information after clearing the cache?

This is a known issue with the new 2025-2026 FAFSA student signature pages. According to the Federal Student Aid office, the problem usually happens when there's incomplete information in one of the previous sections. Even though it LOOKS complete, sometimes the system doesn't register all the answers. Have your daughter go back through each section one by one and click "Save" at the bottom of each page, even if she already completed them. Pay special attention to the sections about her citizenship status and selective service (if applicable). Those are often the culprits.

•That makes sense! She did mention that she wasn't sure about one of the citizenship questions and might have skipped it. We'll double-check all those sections tonight. Thanks for the tip!

someone told me if u use different devices it can cause this. like if she started on laptop then tried to sign on her phone. my cousin had this issue and had to start completely over lol

•Oh no, I hope she doesn't have to start over! She's been working on her application from both her laptop and phone, so this could definitely be the problem. Thanks for the warning.

•I know it's beyond frustrating! I had this happen with my daughter too. What finally worked for us was calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center. Fair warning though - I spent 2+ hours on hold before getting through.

This is actually a fairly common issue with the new FAFSA system. Here's what I recommend: 1. First, try the browser cache clearing that was suggested 2. If that doesn't work, have your daughter check if her FSA ID is properly linked to her Social Security Number - sometimes there's a verification issue there 3. Make sure all demographic information exactly matches what's on her Social Security card 4. Try completing the FAFSA in one sitting without switching devices 5. Double-check that the email verification was completed for her FSA ID If none of that works, unfortunately you'll need to contact FSA directly. The phone lines are extremely backed up right now with the new application issues.

•Thank you for this detailed checklist! We'll work through these steps tonight. Her FSA ID was created a few weeks ago, so hopefully that's not the issue, but we'll verify everything just to be safe.

You might want to try Claimyr if you need to speak with someone at the Federal Student Aid office. I was stuck on hold forever trying to fix a similar signature issue, then discovered this service that holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me hours of waiting! Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. It was such a relief to actually talk to someone who could help with the signature error.

•Does that actually work? I need to call about my son's SAI calculation but keep getting discouraged by the wait times.

•Yes! It saved me so much time. They held my place in line and I was able to get other things done instead of being stuck on hold. The agent I spoke with fixed the signature problem in about 5 minutes once I got through.

This might sound odd, but check if your daughter's name has any special characters or if it's particularly long. My daughter has a hyphenated last name, and the system kept giving the same error until we realized the hyphen was causing problems with the signature page. We had to make sure her name was entered EXACTLY the same way across all sections of the application.

•That's interesting! Her name is pretty straightforward, but she does have a middle name that sometimes gets truncated on forms. I'll have her double-check that everything matches her Social Security card.

UPDATE: I just checked the Federal Student Aid Twitter account, and they've acknowledged there's an issue with the student signature page that they're working to fix. It's affecting a lot of people applying this week. They suggest trying again in 24-48 hours if the other troubleshooting steps don't work.

•Thanks for the update! That's actually a relief to hear it's a system issue and not something we're doing wrong. I'll have her try the troubleshooting steps first, but it's good to know we might just need to wait for them to fix it.

Did you guys manage to fix this? My niece is having the exact same problem now and I'm trying to help her figure it out.

•Yes! We actually got it fixed last night. We followed the advice about clearing the browser cache AND we switched from Safari to Chrome. Then my daughter went through each section one by one, saving each page even if she had already completed it. When she got to the signature page, it worked! So I think it was a combination of browser issues and maybe some unsaved data.

I'm so glad to hear this community exists! I'm a college freshman whose little brother is about to apply for his FAFSA next year, and reading through these posts is already teaching me so much about potential issues to watch out for. The browser compatibility problems seem to be a recurring theme - I'll definitely make sure he uses Chrome from the start and sticks to one device throughout the process. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and solutions!

•That's such a smart approach to get ahead of these issues! I wish I had known about the browser compatibility problems when my daughter first started her application - would have saved us so much stress. One other tip I'd add for your brother: make sure he has all his documents ready before he even starts (tax returns, bank statements, etc.) so he can complete everything in one sitting. The FAFSA system seems to work much better when you don't leave it partially completed for days. Good luck to him next year!
