FAFSA signature error loop - school says delete application but can't log in

I'm at my wit's end with this FAFSA signature nightmare. We submitted my daughter's application back in December and now we're stuck in this bizarre loop: • December: Completed full FAFSA application with both our signatures (at least we thought) • February: College financial aid office emails saying her application is incomplete - no notification from studentaid.gov • I managed to log in and complete MY signature part again • My daughter keeps getting "unknown error occurred" every time she tries to sign • April: School now claims my daughter never signed FAFSA at all • She tried with financial aid advisor sitting next to her - still getting errors on verification page • Spent HOURS with FAFSA help desk getting transferred and disconnected • Got told it's "browser issues" (tried 3 different browsers and 2 different devices) • Then told we have to wait for "system update" from February changes to process • Now financial aid office says they might be able to "request paper signature from Dept of Ed" but that failed • Today: School says we should DELETE the application and start over but... we can't even log in properly! Has anyone dealt with this signature verification error cycle? Her SAI could qualify her for significant grants but we can't move forward. Any solutions?

This sounds like a classic FSA ID issue, not the FAFSA application itself. Your daughter's FSA ID is likely disconnected from her application somehow. Instead of deleting, try this: 1. Have your daughter go to studentaid.gov/fsa-id/ 2. Select "Forgot Username" or "Forgot Password" (even if she knows it) 3. Complete identity verification 4. Create new challenge questions 5. Try logging in with the refreshed credentials If that doesn't work, call 1-800-433-3243 and specifically ask for the "FSA ID Technical Support" team. The regular helpline folks often can't solve these deep technical issues.

Thank you for the detailed steps! I'll have her try the FSA ID reset today. We've been transferred to technical support twice but they disconnected both times after 20+ minutes on hold. Absolutely maddening when her financial aid package is hanging in the balance.

this happened 2 my brother to. The "unknown error" thing is the WORST!!! he had to make a whole new fsa id bc his old 1 got corrupted or somthing. dont delete the application!!!! thats BAD advice from the school tbh

That's what I was thinking too! Deleting seems extreme when everything else is done. Did your brother have to start the whole application over or just fix the FSA ID part?

We went through the EXACT same nightmare scenario! After weeks of frustration, what worked was having my son create an entirely new FSA ID with a different email address. The old one was somehow corrupted in their system. Here's what's weird - when he created the new FSA ID, he could suddenly see his FAFSA application was actually COMPLETE with his signature! The system was showing different statuses to him vs. the school. The school had to refresh something on their end to see the updated status. Don't delete the application - that's a last resort. Ask the financial aid office if they can specifically check the backend status with Dept of Ed first.

Oh wow, that's fascinating! So the system was showing him incomplete but it was actually signed? We'll definitely try creating a new FSA ID before considering deletion. The school's portal still shows "Missing Student Signature" but maybe it's a similar glitch.

Hey there, I've been dealing with FAFSA for several years now (third kid in college) and these signature glitches are unfortunately common. Have you tried having your daughter call the Federal Student Aid Information Center directly? The school can only see what's in their system, but the FSA folks can sometimes see deeper issues. Btw, I recently found this service called Claimyr that helps you skip the hold times when calling FSA. Saved me hours of waiting! Their site is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ - basically they wait on hold for you then call you when an agent is ready. Might be worth it since resolving this by phone seems to be your best bet at this point.

Is Claimyr legit? I've seen it mentioned before but hesitated to try. We've been on hold with FAFSA for literally 2+ hours before getting disconnected multiple times.

Yep, totally legit - used it twice now. They don't ask for any personal info beyond your phone number to call you back. Beats waiting on hold for hours just to get disconnected!

Financial aid administrator here. This sounds like a system synchronization issue we've seen several times this cycle. The 2024-2025 FAFSA rollout has been exceptionally problematic. What's likely happening is your daughter's signature IS registered in the Federal Student Aid system, but the status isn't properly syncing with your school's system. The technical term is an "identity validation mismatch." DO NOT DELETE THE APPLICATION YET. Have your daughter: 1. Take screenshots of any errors 2. Create a new FSA ID using a different email address 3. Call 1-800-433-3243 and request to speak with a FAFSA Processing Specialist (not just the frontline support) 4. Ask them to check the "signature status flag" in their system 5. Request they manually push a status update to your school's financial aid office If all else fails, only then consider starting over. But at this point in the cycle, it may be faster to fix the existing application than start fresh.

Thank you so much for this expert advice! I had no idea there was a "signature status flag" they could check. We'll definitely try this approach. If we have to start over, will that delay her financial aid package significantly? Her school's deadline for priority consideration is June 1.

If you have to start over, request that the school use your original submission date for priority consideration purposes. Most schools will honor this if the delay was caused by system issues. Document everything and be persistent!

WHATEVER U DO DONT DELETE!!!! My cousin deleted her application after similar problems and had to START ALL OVER and missed her school's priority deadline for grants!!! The schools financial aid ppl aren't always right about FAFSA stuff they just want a easy fix for THEM not you!!

omg thats so true. my financial aid office told me to delete my moms info and reenter it for a correction and it MESSED UP my whole dependency status somehow??? took WEEKS to fix

This is exactly what I'm afraid of! The June 1 deadline is coming up fast and I don't want my daughter to miss out on grants. We'll definitely avoid deleting until we've exhausted all other options.

Have your daughter try logging in using an Incognito/Private browser window. I had weird errors that only happened in regular browser sessions because of cached data. Also, clear cookies specifically for studentaid.gov before trying again. And this may sound silly, but has your daughter tried signing in very late at night or very early morning? The system gets overwhelmed during peak hours and sometimes works perfectly at 5am when nobody's using it.

We've tried incognito mode and clearing cookies multiple times, but we haven't tried the off-hours approach! That's a great idea - we'll set an alarm and try at 5am tomorrow. At this point we're willing to try anything.

Quick update: I checked with my son, and what finally worked for us was having the financial aid office submit a case to FSA's "Application Processing Division" - not just regular support. Apparently they can do this through a special school portal. Maybe ask your financial aid office if they can submit a processing case for your daughter specifically about the signature issue?

0 coins

I'll definitely ask about this! Thank you for the follow-up. It's frustrating that there are apparently special escalation channels that they haven't offered yet. I'll call financial aid first thing tomorrow.

One other technical troubleshooting step: Make sure your daughter's name, DOB, and SSN are EXACTLY the same between her FSA ID account and the FAFSA application. Even a single missing hyphen or middle initial can cause these signature verification loops. This is especially true with the new FAFSA system rollout for 2024-2025.

0 coins

That's a good point - I'll have her check that carefully. Her legal name has an apostrophe that sometimes causes system issues. If that's the problem, can it be corrected without starting over?

0 coins

Yes! Name mismatches can be corrected through the FSA ID portal without starting over. Have her update her FSA ID profile first, then wait 24-48 hours before trying to sign the FAFSA again. The systems need time to synchronize.
