Stuck on parent signature for FAFSA - should I start over completely?
I'm at my wits end with my daughter's 2025-2026 FAFSA application. For THREE WEEKS we've been stuck at the parent signature stage - the system won't let me make ANY changes and keeps cycling back to the same error screen. I've called the 800 number at least 15 times (literally spending hours on hold each time) and either get disconnected or told "we're experiencing high call volume." My daughter attends a tiny rural college prep school (graduating class of 8 students!) and their guidance counselor retired last month. No replacement yet. I'm seriously considering just scrapping the whole application and starting fresh, but I'm worried about delays or potential flags on her account. Has anyone had to start completely over? Any downsides besides the obvious time waste? At this point I've probably spent 30+ hours trying to get this stupid signature to work, so I'm almost ready to try anything. Does starting over reset the whole timeline for SAI calculation?

I wouldn't recommend starting over unless absolutely necessary. The system might flag duplicate applications and potentially cause more delays. Have you tried using a different browser or clearing your cache/cookies? Sometimes the FAFSA site has weird technical glitches that can be fixed by simple troubleshooting. Also, check if you're using the correct FSA ID for the parent signature - that's a common issue.

•I've tried three different browsers, cleared cache/cookies multiple times, and even tried my husband's computer. Same issue every time. And yes, I'm 100% sure I'm using the correct FSA ID - triple checked that. It keeps saying "signature pending" but then won't let me proceed to actually sign! It's maddening!

•Did you eventually get through on the phone? Any tips for actually reaching a human being? I feel like I'm losing my mind with this endless hold music.

I had to deal with this EXACT issue for my son's FAFSA. The parent signature page was completely glitched. I was stuck for almost 3 weeks too. After trying literally everything, I finally got through to someone helpful at FSA and they told me there was a backend system error that they had to manually fix on their end. Starting over would NOT have solved it because it was tied to my FSA ID, not the specific application. Honestly, your best bet is to keep trying to reach someone by phone who can actually help. I know it's beyond frustrating, but restarting could potentially create new problems or flags in the system.

•That's really helpful info, thank you! Did they tell you what specifically was wrong with your FSA ID? I'm wondering if I should try to create a new parent FSA ID altogether.

i started over and regretted it BIG TIME!!!! the system flagged both applications and i had to send in a bunch of extra verification documents. took like 2 months longer than everyone else to get my SAI score. dont do it!!!

After getting stuck in the FAFSA signature loop last semester, I found a service called Claimyr that helped me actually get through to a real person at Federal Student Aid. You put in your number and they basically handle the waiting on hold part for you, then call you when a real agent is actually on the line. Saved me hours of frustration. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ that shows how it works. The agent I finally reached was able to override the signature glitch on their end.

•Has anyone actually tried this service? Seems too good to be true. How do they get through when regular callers can't?

The FAFSA system is COMPLETELY BROKEN this year after their so-called "improvements." It's an absolute disgrace. They roll out this half-baked system that doesn't work properly and then make it IMPOSSIBLE to reach anyone for help. Meanwhile students' financial futures hang in the balance and no one at the Department of Education seems to care! I've written TWO complaint letters and all I got back were automated responses. The whole thing is a joke.

•While I understand your frustration, and there have definitely been some challenges with the new SAI system, I'd recommend focusing on solutions rather than complaints at this point. For the original poster, there is actually a special technical support email specifically for parent signature issues: FAFSA.TechSupport@ed.gov. Include your name, student's name, and detailed description of the error you're seeing. They typically respond within 48-72 hours for these specific issues.

Have you tried logging in suuuuper late at night? Like 2am? That's when I finally got my parent signature to work lol. I think the system is less busy then.

Based on everything shared, here's what I recommend: 1. DON'T start over - multiple applications will likely cause verification flags 2. Try the technical support email specifically for signature issues: FAFSA.TechSupport@ed.gov 3. If you need more immediate help, consider using the call service someone mentioned or try calling during off-hours (early morning or late night) 4. Document everything - take screenshots of error messages and note dates/times of your attempts 5. If all else fails, contact your daughter's college financial aid office - even at small schools, they often have direct contacts at FSA they can reach The parent signature issue is a known glitch in the system this year. Starting over won't fix it since it's likely tied to your FSA ID in their database.

•Thank you for this comprehensive advice! I'll definitely try the email first, then maybe the call service if that doesn't work. I have been taking screenshots so that's good to hear. I'll update this thread once I (hopefully) get this resolved in case it helps someone else.

Quick update for anyone following this thread - the signature issues are being addressed in the next system update according to the FSA Twitter account. They posted yesterday that they're doing maintenance this weekend specifically to fix parent signature problems. Might be worth waiting until Monday to try again if other methods don't work.
