Parent signature stuck for FAFSA - wrong SSN in system for 3 months!
I'm at my wits' end trying to complete my son's 2025-26 FAFSA form. For THREE MONTHS we've been receiving weekly reminders to sign the application. My son signed his part immediately, but when I try to sign as parent, the system keeps rejecting my Social Security Number saying it's "not correct" - even though it's definitely the right number! The website won't let me update my SSN, and I've used the chat feature at least 8 times. Every rep just tells me I need to call the FSA phone number, but when I call, I either get disconnected or sit on hold until the system automatically ends the call after 2 hours. Is there some secret backdoor to fix this? My son's school priority deadline is coming up in 3 weeks and I'm seriously stressed about him losing aid opportunities because of this technical glitch.

This exact thing happened to me last year! The problem is likely in the FSA ID system, not the FAFSA form itself. You need to try to update your SSN in your FSA ID account first (separate from the FAFSA). Go to studentaid.gov (not the FAFSA form), click on your name at the top right, then "My Account," then "Edit Personal Information." You might need to verify your email first. If that doesn't work, try creating a completely new FSA ID with a different email address but with your correct SSN.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I tried going to My Account but the same issue happens there - it won't let me edit my SSN because the system says I need to verify my current SSN first (which it won't accept). It's like being trapped in a computer logic error. Did you eventually get through on the phone?

•It's somewhat comforting to know I'm not alone, but also frustrating that they haven't fixed such a critical problem! Have you found any workarounds yet?

This is a known issue affecting many parents this cycle. When the FAFSA moved to the SAI calculation method, they made database changes that sometimes cause mismatches with SSA verification. Three things to try: 1. Call very early - literally at 8:00:01 AM Eastern when they open 2. Check if your SSN might be connected to a previous FSA ID you forgot about (sometimes from your own education) 3. Submit a "FAFSA Correction" form through your son's school financial aid office Option 3 worked for several parents I've advised. The school can submit a correction form that bypasses the online system's verification checks. However, it may take 1-2 weeks to process.

•Thank you so much for these detailed suggestions! I never thought about contacting my son's school directly. I'll call their financial aid office tomorrow morning. And I'll definitely try the early morning call trick too. I don't think I have an old FSA ID since this is my first time dealing with college financial aid.

I work in a university financial aid office, and we're seeing this issue frequently this year. The most reliable solution is having someone actually answer your call at FSA. Unfortunately, their call volume is astronomical with the FAFSA Simplification Act changes. I've had students use Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through - it holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Once you get an agent, specifically ask for the "SSN verification override" - that's the internal term they use. They can manually push your application through while the SSN issue gets fixed in the background.

•Thank you for this insider information! I've never heard of Claimyr before but I'm desperate enough to try anything at this point. I'll check out that video. And knowing to ask for the "SSN verification override" specifically is super helpful - none of the chat agents ever mentioned that term to me.

pffft the whole fafsa system is JUNK this year! they had extra time to implement the new system and still messed it up. my daughter's financial aid package is $7,800 less than last year with NO change in our income. i bet your ssn problem is just one symptom of their garbage system.

•The SAI (Student Aid Index) calculation is completely different from the old EFC formula, so that might explain the change in your daughter's aid package. It's not necessarily a system error - they changed how they evaluate financial need. But the technical glitches are definitely frustrating for everyone.

Update: I tried the Claimyr service that someone suggested, and I FINALLY got through to a real person at FSA! The agent confirmed there was a mismatch between my SSN in their system and what the Social Security Administration had on file (even though I was entering it correctly). They did the "verification override" mentioned above and manually updated my account. My signature went through this morning and our FAFSA is now complete! Thank you all for the help - I would have never figured this out from the automated emails they kept sending.

•Great to hear! For anyone else with this issue, remember to check your SAI calculation after this type of override. Sometimes these manual fixes can trigger a separate verification flag, so be sure to log back in after 3-5 business days to confirm everything processed correctly.

•For students (not parents) with SSN mismatches, there's actually a different process. He should contact his school's financial aid office and ask about a "Special Circumstances FAFSA Review" - this is different from the parent signature override. The school can initiate this process and it usually resolves within 10 business days.
