Wrong SSN on dad's FAFSA contribution - can't delete or fix it
I'm at my wit's end with this FAFSA nightmare! My son's father completed his contributor section last week, but he accidentally entered the wrong social security number (transposed two digits). He tried to go back and fix it, but the system won't let him edit that field. We then tried to delete his entire contribution to start over, but that option seems broken too! The delete button just refreshes the page without doing anything. Has anyone dealt with this before? I'm worried it will delay my son's financial aid or flag his application for verification. Our school's priority deadline is in 3 weeks and I'm starting to panic. Do we need to contact FSA directly? Start a new application? Any help would be SO appreciated!

same thing happened with my daughters app! the SSA verification will fail and that automatically triggers a verification. you'll prob need to call FSA directly to fix it but good luck getting thru lol

•Oh no, that's what I was afraid of! How long did it take to resolve your daughter's situation? Did you have to submit extra documentation or anything?

This is actually a common issue, and you do need to address it before the application is fully processed. Don't try to create a new application - that causes more problems than it solves. Here's what you should do: 1. Document the error with screenshots showing the incorrect SSN 2. Contact your son's college financial aid office and let them know about the error (they might be able to put a note on the file) 3. Contact Federal Student Aid office to explain the situation - they can place a correction request Typically, the verification will be triggered due to the SSN mismatch, but if you're proactive, it shouldn't delay the aid package much if at all.

•I had a similar issue and did this ^ BUT my son's aid was delayed by almost 6 WEEKS because we couldnt get through to anyone at FSA!! The phone system is COMPLETELY BROKEN.

•That's actually reassuring to hear that it's common! I'll definitely reach out to my son's university financial aid office tomorrow to see if they can help.

While everyone is right about contacting the school, I want to add that you ABSOLUTELY MUST get this fixed with FSA directly. When we had a similar issue (husband put wrong DOB, not SSN), the school said they could note it but ultimately the SAI calculation would be affected until the correction was made officially. I was on hold with FSA for 3.5 hours before getting disconnected TWICE. It was infuriating. I finally used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to hold my place in line and they called me back when an agent was available. Saved me so much time and frustration. They have a quick demo video if you're curious: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Once I got through, the agent was able to unlock that field for correction. Took about 5 minutes to actually fix once I had someone on the line.

•Yep! It saved me so much time. After trying for days to get through myself, I had an agent on the line within about an hour of using their service. Worth every penny considering how much aid was at stake.

I'm a financial aid counselor, and I see this issue regularly. Here's what you need to know: 1. The SSN error will trigger a verification flag, which can delay processing 2. The school cannot override SSN verification issues in the FAFSA system 3. You need to contact Federal Student Aid directly to have them unlock the field for correction 4. Once corrected, request that they expedite the re-verification process Make sure to mention to FSA that you're approaching your school's priority deadline. They can sometimes flag the application for expedited processing. Document everything - get the agent's name, case number if provided, and follow up with an email to your school's financial aid office explaining the situation and when it was resolved. Also, double-check that your son's SSN is correct on his portion of the application. I've seen cases where people focus on fixing one error while missing another.

•Thank you for such a detailed explanation! We double-checked my son's SSN and it's correct, so at least that's not an issue. I'll make sure to ask for a case number and expedited processing when I call FSA.

btw when u do finally get thru to FSA make SURE u ask them to unlock the field AND to remove the verification flag if possible!! Sometimes they can do that and save u the headache later...

THE ENTIRE FAFSA SYSTEM IS BROKEN THIS YEAR!!! I've been dealing with issues since January and STILL haven't resolved everything. Why did they roll out a completely new system without proper testing?? My daughter might lose her scholarship because of these delays and NO ONE at FSA seems to care. I've called 28 TIMES!!!!!

I had something similar happen but with my own SSN when applying for my daughter. I spent weeks trying to fix it myself online. Called FSA and actually got through after only 45 minutes somehow. The agent told me they've been seeing this issue constantly with the new FAFSA rollout. Something about the input validation not working properly in certain browsers.

UPDATE: I managed to get through to someone at FSA this morning! They confirmed that they need to unlock the SSN field on their end. The agent said the correction should be processed within 3-5 business days, and they put a note in the system about our school's priority deadline. Fingers crossed everything gets fixed in time. Thank you all so much for your advice and support! This process has been so stressful, especially since it's my son's first year applying for college aid.

•That's great news! Just make sure to follow up if you don't see the change reflected in the system after 5 business days. And definitely keep your son's school's financial aid office in the loop - they can sometimes access updates before they're visible to you in the system.

•Will do! I've already emailed his financial aid counselor at the university to let them know what's happening. Thanks again for all your help!

Glad to hear you got through to FSA and they're working on fixing it! Just wanted to add for anyone else reading this thread - if you're having trouble getting through to FSA by phone, try calling right when they open (8am ET) or during lunch hours when call volume might be lower. I've noticed the wait times are usually shorter then. Also, make sure you have your FSA ID and all relevant documents ready before calling so you don't waste time once you get connected. Good luck with getting everything resolved before your deadline!

•Thanks for those tips! I actually called around 8:15am this morning and only waited about 20 minutes, which was way better than the horror stories I'd been hearing. Having all my documents ready definitely helped too - the agent was able to pull everything up quickly. For anyone else dealing with this, I'd also recommend writing down the key points you want to cover before calling so you don't forget anything important when you're finally talking to someone!

Just wanted to share my experience for anyone else dealing with this issue - I had the exact same problem last year with my daughter's FAFSA when I accidentally entered my SSN with a typo. The key thing I learned is to be persistent but patient with FSA. When you call, make sure to explain that it's a contributor SSN error specifically, not the student's SSN, because they handle those differently. Also, if the first agent you talk to seems unsure about the process, don't be afraid to politely ask to speak with a supervisor who deals with FAFSA corrections regularly. Some agents are newer and might not know all the steps for unlocking those locked fields. Document everything with dates and reference numbers - this saved me when I had to call back for a follow-up. The whole process took about 2 weeks from start to finish, but my daughter's aid wasn't delayed because we caught it early and kept the school informed throughout the process.
