FAFSA rejected my son's SSN and won't let us update it - system error?
Seriously frustrated with the FAFSA system right now! My son is applying for 2025-2026 aid and we submitted everything last week. Now the status shows his information is 'not verified' and when we logged in to check, the Social Security number showing in the system is COMPLETELY wrong. It's not even remotely close to his actual SSN (off by more than 5 digits). The crazy part is I triple-checked this when we entered it! When we try to edit the SSN field to fix it, the system won't let us make any changes. Has anyone else run into this weird glitch? How do we get this fixed without starting the whole application over again? His college priority deadline is in 3 weeks!

Oh yeah, had the EXACT same problem with my daughter's application last month! The system somehow changed her SSN to something completely different after submission. Called FSA for FOUR DAYS straight and kept getting disconnected. Finally got through and they told me it was a known glitch in their system that happens sometimes when their verification process has an error. They had to manually reset something on their end.

•Thanks for sharing this! Did they give you any specific number to call or department to ask for? I've been calling the main helpline but keep getting the automated system.

This is actually a recognized system issue that's been occurring more frequently with the 2025-2026 FAFSA. The problem occurs during the SSN verification process with the Social Security Administration. Here's how to resolve it: 1. Do NOT create a new application - this will flag your account for potential fraud 2. You need to speak directly with a FAFSA specialist who can perform a manual override 3. Have your son's actual SSN card available when you call 4. Be prepared to verify identity with additional documentation The issue typically takes 2-3 business days to resolve once you connect with a specialist. Since you mentioned a deadline in 3 weeks, you should have sufficient time if you address this immediately.

•Thank you SO MUCH for this detailed explanation! This makes me feel better knowing it's a recognized issue. Will definitely call tomorrow with his SSN card ready.

why dont u just start over with a new application? seems easier than dealing with their stupid phone system lol

•That's actually not recommended. Creating multiple applications for the same student can trigger a fraud alert in the system, which would delay processing even further. It's much better to get the existing application corrected.

I had to deal with this exact problem when helping my nephew with his FAFSA last month. After spending days trying to get through on the regular FSA number, I discovered a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me skip the phone queue and got me connected to an actual FSA agent in about 10 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent was able to see that the SSN verification system had a glitch and put in an immediate correction request. My nephew's application was fixed within 48 hours. Might be worth a try since you're dealing with a deadline.

•This is incredibly helpful! I've literally spent hours on hold this week. Going to check out that video right now. Did they need any special information to fix the SSN issue?

•They just needed his correct SSN, date of birth, and the exact name as it appears on his Social Security card. Also had to verify some info from the original application to prove identity. The whole call only took about 15 minutes once I got through.

STUPID FAFSA SYSTEM!!! They did the SAME THING to my sister's application and she MISSED HER DEADLINE because they took so long to fix it. The schools need to stop making these ridiculously early priority deadlines when the gov's system is so broken!!!! 😡😡😡

•While I understand your frustration, most schools will work with students if there's a documented FAFSA system issue. Your sister should contact the financial aid office directly and explain the situation - many schools have exception processes for these cases.

•That's interesting - I hadn't thought about asking his counselor. I'll reach out to the school tomorrow too.

Hi there! Financial aid counselor here. This SSN verification error is becoming more common with the new FAFSA processing system. A few important points: 1. This is a known issue with the FSA-SSA verification interface, not something you did wrong 2. The fastest resolution is calling FSA directly and requesting an "SSN verification override" - make sure to use those exact words 3. Document all communication - get confirmation numbers and agent names 4. If your deadline is approaching, contact your son's college financial aid office IMMEDIATELY and request a priority deadline extension due to a "FAFSA system error" - most schools are aware of these issues and will accommodate 5. Don't create a new application - this will only complicate things further I've seen this resolved in as little as 24 hours when handled correctly.

•Thank you so much for this professional advice! I'll call tomorrow and use those exact words. Should I also send something in writing to the schools he's applied to?

•Yes, I would recommend emailing the financial aid offices at each school. Include your son's name, DOB, student ID (if he has one), and a brief explanation that you're experiencing the "FAFSA SSN verification system error" and are working with FSA to resolve it. Most schools are tracking these cases and may have institutional processes to ensure he doesn't miss out on aid opportunities while waiting for the correction.

UPDATE: Finally got this resolved! Used Claimyr to get through to FSA (seriously, saved me hours of wait time), and the agent confirmed it was indeed a system glitch with their verification process. Had to provide his actual SSN and some identity verification, and they submitted an override. Got an email this morning that the correction has been processed and his application is now moving forward. For anyone else dealing with this - definitely call rather than trying to fix it online, and make sure to use the phrase "SSN verification override" like someone suggested here. Thanks everyone for your help!

•So glad it worked out! I'm still dealing with FAFSA issues for my younger daughter... might try that Claimyr thing since the hold times are RIDICULOUS.

•Thanks for sharing the update! This is helpful information for other families encountering the same issue. I recommend checking your son's SAI calculation once it's completed to ensure everything processed correctly after the override.

I'm so relieved to see this thread! I'm currently dealing with the exact same issue with my daughter's FAFSA - her SSN got completely scrambled in the system after we submitted. Reading through all these responses has been incredibly helpful, especially knowing it's a recognized system bug and not something we did wrong. Planning to call FSA tomorrow using the "SSN verification override" phrase that @Mason Kaczka mentioned, and I'm definitely going to check out that Claimyr service @Olivia Van-Cleve recommended since the regular phone lines have been impossible. Thanks @Emily Sanjay for the update - gives me hope this can be resolved quickly! Has anyone else had success with the override process recently?

•Hi @Chloe Martin! I just went through this exact same nightmare with my son's application last month. The "SSN verification override" phrase really does work - I think it helps the agents immediately understand what type of system error you're dealing with. When you call, make sure you have your daughter's Social Security card handy because they'll want to verify the correct number digit by digit. Also, don't be discouraged if the first agent you talk to seems unfamiliar with the issue - I had to ask to speak with a "FAFSA specialist" to get someone who really knew how to handle the override. The whole process took about 3 business days from when I called to when I got the confirmation email that it was fixed. Definitely worth trying Claimyr too since getting through the regular way can take forever!

Just wanted to add another data point here - I'm a parent who went through this exact SSN scrambling issue with my son's 2024-2025 FAFSA last year. The frustrating thing is that this seems to be happening more frequently, but the FSA agents I spoke with acted like it was the first time they'd heard of it! I ended up having to escalate to a supervisor who finally admitted it was a "known technical issue with the verification system." The fix took about 5 days once I got to the right person. For anyone still dealing with this, I'd recommend asking specifically for a supervisor if the first agent seems confused about the SSN verification override process. Also, screenshot everything before you call - I took photos of the wrong SSN showing in the system which helped prove it wasn't user error. This really shouldn't be happening to so many families, especially with such tight deadlines!

•@Reina Salazar This is so helpful to know about asking for a supervisor! I m'new to dealing with FAFSA issues and had no idea this was such a widespread problem. The screenshot idea is brilliant - I wish I had thought of that when we first noticed the wrong SSN in my son s'application. It s'really frustrating that the agents aren t'being properly trained on these known issues. Thanks for sharing your experience - it gives me confidence that persistence will pay off when I call tomorrow!
