FAFSA disaster - entered father's SSN in student section, now system says he has account & won't let me fix it

I'm at my wit's end with this FAFSA nightmare! Back in January, I started my son's 2025-2026 application and accidentally put his father's social security number in the STUDENT section (totally my fault, I was exhausted that night). When I realized my mistake, the FAFSA helpline told me to just start over with a new application. Well, NOW when I try to create a new application and enter his dad's SSN in the PARENT section where it BELONGS, the system says "this person already has an account" - but when I try to access the original incorrect application, it says "SSN doesn't match." I'm completely STUCK in this ridiculous loop! I've sent probably 15 emails, tried the live chat feature repeatedly (disconnects every time), and called the 1-800 number at least 20 times but can never reach an actual human. I desperately need to speak with someone who can help me fix this mess. The priority deadline for his state school is coming up soon and I'm panicking. Has anyone dealt with this kind of SSN mixup before? Is there any secret way to actually get through to a real person at FSA? I'm seriously losing sleep over this.

Thanks for the tip! Did your niece eventually get it fixed by phone, or did she have to do something else? I'm willing to try anything at this point.

The FAFSA system is such a disaster this year with all the "simplified" changes. When you call, are you selecting option 2 (for parents) or option 5 (for technical issues)? I found option 5 gets you to someone faster who can actually help with account problems. Also, make sure you have both your son's AND his father's FSA IDs ready when you call - they'll need both to fix the SSN mix-up.

I've been selecting option 2! I'll definitely try option 5 next time. And thanks for the tip about having both FSA IDs ready - I only had my son's information in front of me before.

This exact situation is why I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) last month. I had a similar issue with my daughter's application where I entered my SSN incorrectly and got stuck in that same verification loop. I spent weeks trying to reach someone. Claimyr basically holds your place in the phone queue and calls you back when an agent is about to answer. I was skeptical but you can watch their demo video (https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ) to see how it works. They got me connected to an actual FSA agent in about 40 minutes instead of me waiting on hold all day. The agent was able to clear both accounts and let me start fresh.

I've heard about that service too - a colleague at work used it to fix her son's verification issues. Said it saved her from taking a day off work just to sit on hold.

Thank you! I'm going to check this out today. At this point I'd try anything to get this fixed. Did the agent have to delete both accounts completely or were they able to just fix the SSN issue?

NOBODY AT FAFSA KNOWS WHAT THEYRE DOING!!!! I had wrong SSN problem too and called 37 TIMES before someone fixed it!!!! The whole system is BROKEN and they expect us to just figure it out ourselves. I finally got through by calling at EXACTLY 8:00am Eastern when they open and waiting for 2.5 hours. Complete joke of a system!!!!

37 times?! That's insane but honestly not surprising based on my experience so far. Did you have to do anything special when you finally got through? I'm willing to wake up early to try the 8am trick.

I work at a college financial aid office, and we're seeing this exact problem multiple times every day. Here's what you need to do: 1. First, gather ALL documentation: both SSNs, both birthdates, both FSA IDs, and any confirmation numbers you have from the original application 2. Call the FSA help line at 1-800-433-3243 and select option 5 for technical issues (not option 2) 3. When you reach a representative, specifically ask for an "account specialist" who can handle FSA ID and SSN correction issues 4. They will need to verify both identities and then must submit a backend ticket to their IT department to disassociate the incorrectly linked SSN 5. This typically takes 3-5 business days to resolve after they submit the ticket The agent cannot fix it immediately as it requires database-level changes. I know it's frustrating, but keep detailed notes of who you speak with and when. If possible, try to get a case or ticket number for reference in follow-up calls.

Thank you SO much for these detailed steps! This is exactly what I needed. I'll try calling again today with all this information ready to go. Should I also have my son's tax information ready, or is that not necessary for fixing the SSN issue?

You won't need the tax documents for this specific issue - it's purely an identity verification and database correction. But having the FSA IDs, SSNs, and birthdates is absolutely essential. Good luck!

have u tried going to ur sons school financial aid office? my daughter had similar problem with her SAI calculation (not exactly same but also couldn't fix online) and the people at her community college fixed it right away! they have direct contacts at fafsa that regular parents don't have

That's a great idea! My son hasn't picked a school yet (still deciding between 3), but maybe I could contact one of their financial aid offices for help. Worth a try at this point.

I experienced something very similar in February! The issue is actually on their database backend - when you put a parent's SSN in the student field, it creates what they call a "ghost account" that conflicts with both the student and parent profiles. I was eventually able to reach someone after trying for weeks (literally called 10+ times daily). The agent had to submit a special ticket to their database team to disassociate the SSN from the incorrect profile. It took about 8 business days for the fix to process, then I had to create completely new FSA IDs for both my daughter and myself before starting the application over. Just be persistent and very specific about the issue when you do reach someone. Make sure to get a confirmation number or ticket number for any work they do on your case.

Thank you for explaining exactly what's happening! No one has told me about these "ghost accounts" but that makes perfect sense. I'll make sure to ask specifically about disassociating the SSN when I finally get through to someone.

I'm definitely giving up on the email approach - 15 messages and not a single response. Phone it is!

Unfortunately, this specific issue (SSN accidentally used in the wrong person's profile) isn't a browser or computer problem - it's a database issue on the FAFSA side. It requires a customer service representative to submit a backend fix.
