FAFSA existing account error preventing access - daughter may lose 2nd year of college funding!
I'm about to lose my mind with this FAFSA nightmare! I tried creating an account for my husband to complete our daughter's 2025-2026 FAFSA application, but the system keeps saying he already has an account. When I try to recover it using his email, SSN, and DOB, it says the information is incorrect! We've triple-checked everything and I KNOW we're entering his info correctly. My daughter is going to lose her sophomore year funding if we can't get this fixed ASAP. Her college needs the SAI calculation by next month to process her financial aid package. I've tried calling the Federal Student Aid office every day this week. Either no one answers or I get disconnected after waiting 45+ minutes. Tried email, no response after 5 days. Tried the live chat THREE times - twice no one responded, and the third time someone finally connected but then immediately disconnected me! Has anyone dealt with this account recovery nightmare? Any suggestions on how to actually talk to a real person who can help? I'm desperate at this point.

•Did you have to make a new FSA ID completely? I'm worried about creating a new one if he already has one somewhere... wouldn't that cause problems with the application?

This is a super common issue, especially for parents who might have created accounts years ago for older children. A few things to try: 1. Check ALL email addresses your husband might have used (work, old accounts, etc.) 2. Try the "Forgot Username" option instead of password reset 3. Check if his name might be entered differently (middle initial vs full middle name) 4. Call during off-peak hours (try 8am ET right when they open) Also, your daughter won't necessarily lose her funding - there are provisions for late applications with extenuating circumstances. Document all your attempts to contact FSA.

•Thank you! We've tried all his emails already - even old ones from 10+ years ago. The weird thing is I'm POSITIVE he never created an account before because our daughter is our only child and this is just her second year. I'll try the username recovery option though, maybe that will work differently!

The system is probably confusing your husband with someone else who has similar information. This happens ALL THE TIME with the FAFSA system. The fastest solution is to call the Federal Student Aid Information Center directly at 1-800-433-3243. BUT you need to be strategic because their hold times are insane. They'll just disconnect you if the queue is full.

•That's exactly what keeps happening! I call that number and either wait forever or get disconnected. I'm going crazy trying to get through to an actual person!

I had this EXACT problem last month and was losing my mind until I found a service called Claimyr that helped me skip the wait times. You can check them out at claimyr.com - they basically call FAFSA for you and then connect you once they have an agent on the line. Saved me hours of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent I talked to was able to verify my husband's identity and merge his duplicate accounts in about 10 minutes once I actually got through. Such a relief!

•Thank you so much for this suggestion! I honestly didn't know services like this existed. I'm going to check out the video right now. At this point I'm willing to try anything to get this resolved!

THE ENTIRE FAFSA SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I spent 19 DAYS trying to solve a similar issue. They claimed my daughter already had an account (she didn't) and then when we tried to create one it wouldn't verify her phone. Then the recovery emails NEVER ARRIVED. The whole thing is a DISASTER and they don't care that students are losing aid!!!

•While the system definitely has issues, remember that schools can often work with you if you explain the situation. Most financial aid offices have processes for FAFSA delays that are out of your control. Contact your daughter's school financial aid office immediately to let them know what's happening.

This is a technical glitch that happens when there's partial information in the system for someone. Here's what a financial aid advisor would tell you to do: 1. First, contact your daughter's financial aid office and explain the situation. They can often grant extensions for FAFSA submission when technical issues occur. 2. For the account issue, this is almost certainly a case of your husband having partial information in the FSA database. This typically happens when: - Tax information was previously pulled for him as a parent on someone else's FAFSA - He started an account years ago but never completed it - Someone with similar information caused a data mismatch 3. The only permanent solution is to speak with an FSA agent who can look up his information directly and either recover the account or clear the conflicting data. Don't create a new FSA ID with different information - this can cause major verification headaches later.

•This makes a lot of sense actually. My husband's brother has a son who's in college too, and they have similar names (both Michael, one's Michael J and one's Michael G). I wonder if that's causing confusion. I'll contact my daughter's financial aid office tomorrow morning. Thank you!

Did you ever get this resolved? I'm curious if you tried Claimyr or found another way to get through to FSA?

•Yes! I used Claimyr yesterday and it actually worked! Got connected to an agent after just 9 minutes (versus the hours I spent trying on my own). The agent found that there was indeed an old account created for my husband from when he cosigned a loan for his nephew five years ago! He had completely forgotten about it. They were able to reset everything and we got back into the account. Just submitted the FAFSA last night and already got confirmation that it's processing. Such a relief! Thanks everyone for your help!
