FAFSA invite issue after correcting SS# error - can I get a new one?

I was helping my son with his 2025-2026 FAFSA application and received the parent contribution invite. While reviewing everything before submitting, I noticed I had entered my SSN incorrectly (typed an 8 instead of a 3 in the last four digits). When I tried to fix it, the system wouldn't let me make the change. I ended up deleting the entire form in frustration. Now I'm worried about what happens next. Will my son be able to send me another parent invite when he starts a new application? Is there anything I need to do with the old invite—like formally reject it or something? The deleted form isn't showing up anywhere in his account, but I'm paranoid something will get messed up with his financial aid. This whole new FAFSA system is driving me crazy! Has anyone dealt with this specific issue? Any advice would be really helpful.

same thing happened to me but with my email address! had to delete and start over. my daughter just sent a new invite no problem. u should be fine

Thanks for sharing your experience. Did you have to wait a certain amount of time between deleting the old application and starting the new one? I'm worried about system glitches.

Yes, your son can send you another invite. When he starts a new FAFSA application, he'll be prompted to add contributors again, and he can enter your information to generate a fresh invitation. The old invite becomes inactive once the associated application is deleted, so there's nothing you need to formally reject or delete on your end. Just make sure he uses the exact same email address for you when sending the new invite that he used before. This helps the system correctly associate your contribution with his application. And double-check all information carefully before submitting this time!

That's really helpful, thank you! So there's no waiting period or anything before he can start a new application? And the old invite won't somehow interfere with the new one?

No waiting period required - he can start a new application immediately. The system treats each application as separate, so the old invite is completely disconnected when the application was deleted. Just make sure to use consistent information for both of you when restarting. One tip: take screenshots of completed sections as you go through the new application, so you have backup documentation in case of any other technical issues.

this new FAFSA system is so buggy!! why couldnt they let you edit your SSN?? my daughter and i had to redo ours THREE TIMES because of errors that wouldnt let us fix them. ridiculous!

I feel your pain! The redesigned FAFSA is supposedly more "user-friendly" but it's been a nightmare for so many families. My advisor told me they're still working out bugs in the system, which is why some fields can't be edited after initial entry. Security measures gone too far if you ask me.

Have you tried calling the Federal Student Aid Information Center to ask about this? They might be able to explain the technical reasons behind why you couldn't edit your SSN and confirm the proper procedure for restarting the application. Their number is 1-800-433-3243, but I've heard the wait times are ridiculous lately.

I was going to suggest calling too, but I actually found a much better solution for getting through to FSA agents. I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) last week when I had issues with my dependent verification process. Instead of waiting on hold forever, they held my place in line and called me back when an agent was available. Saved me hours of frustration! You can see how it works in this video: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Definitely worth it for complicated FAFSA issues where you need to talk to an actual human being.

When dealing with SSN errors on the FAFSA, it's important to understand the system's security protocols. SSNs and certain other identifying information are locked after initial entry as a security measure. This is why you couldn't edit it directly. For your specific situation: 1. Your son can absolutely send a new contributor invite when he creates a new FAFSA application 2. The old invite is automatically invalidated when the application was deleted 3. There's no formal rejection process needed for the old invite 4. No waiting period is required between applications 5. The system won't link the old deleted application to the new one One important tip: when your son restarts the application, make sure he uses his FSA ID to log in before beginning, and verify that all previously started applications show as "deleted" or don't appear at all before starting fresh. This ensures a clean slate. The 2025-2026 FAFSA has enhanced security features that sometimes create these frustrating user experiences, but they're designed to protect sensitive financial information.

Thank you for such a detailed explanation! That makes perfect sense about the security protocols. I'll make sure my son checks for any lingering applications before we start fresh. Really appreciate the thorough advice!

My cousin works in financial aid at a university and she said they're seeing tons of similar problems with the new FAFSA system. She said always save PDFs of everything you submit!!! Even if it seems to go through ok.

UPDATE: We successfully created a new FAFSA application tonight and everything went smoothly! My son sent me a new contributor invite without any problems, and this time I triple-checked my SSN before proceeding. The system accepted all our information and we were able to submit without issues. Thanks everyone for your help and advice!

Great news! Glad it worked out smoothly the second time around. Make sure to keep an eye on your email for any notifications about the SAI (Student Aid Index) calculation or requests for additional verification. Those typically come 3-5 days after successful submission.

Congrats on getting it submitted! It's such a relief when everything finally goes through. I'm still waiting on my daughter's SAI calculation - it's been 10 days and counting. The waiting game is almost as stressful as the application process itself.
