FAFSA suddenly changed to 'in review' after getting SAI - should I be worried?

I'm completely confused about what's happening with my daughter's FAFSA application. She submitted everything back in January and we received her SAI number about two weeks later. Everything seemed fine, but when we checked studentaid.gov yesterday, the status suddenly changed to 'in review.' There was no email notification or explanation - just a status change. Has anyone experienced this? Is this normal or did something trigger a review? I'm worried her financial aid package will be delayed and she needs to make a college decision by May 1st!

How long has it been in review for your son? I'm trying to figure out if this is going to take days or weeks to resolve.

This is actually becoming pretty common this year with the new FAFSA rollout. Several status changes are happening that weren't properly explained to families. The 'in review' status usually means one of three things: 1. Random verification selection (about 15% of applications) 2. Information discrepancy they found when matching with IRS data 3. System-wide reviews they're doing in batches The good news is that having received an SAI initially means your basic application was processed correctly. The bad news is that reviews can take 3-6 weeks to complete.

Thank you for the explanation. Do you know if we need to provide additional documentation or just wait? There's no notification in her account about uploading anything.

Don't panic yet! My daughter's FAFSA went into "review" twice - once in February and again in March. The first time cleared itself after about 10 days, the second time took almost 3 weeks. No explanation either time, but her aid packages from colleges came through just fine. The system is super glitchy this year.

That's somewhat reassuring. Did you ever find out what triggered the reviews or did it just resolve itself without explanation?

You should call Federal Student Aid directly to ask what's happening. The problem is the phone wait times are absolutely ridiculous right now - I waited 2.5 hours last week and then got disconnected. I ended up using Claimyr.com to get through to an agent in about 15 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ The agent explained that my son's application was flagged for review because of a discrepancy between reported household size and tax return information. You might have something similar happening.

Thank you for the suggestion. Those wait times sound awful! I'll check out that service because waiting in uncertainty is driving me crazy.

Reviews usually happen for one of these reasons: 1. System verification - completely random selection 2. Data mismatch - something doesn't match between FAFSA and tax info 3. Unusual circumstances - large assets, income changes, etc. 4. Multiple applications - corrections or updates can trigger reviews Since you already received an SAI, your application was initially processed correctly. The colleges your daughter applied to should still be able to see her original SAI while the review is happening. I recommend contacting each financial aid office and letting them know about the situation.

That's a good point about contacting the schools directly. I hadn't thought about that! I'll reach out to them tomorrow to see if they can still access her information.

That's so frustrating! Have you been able to get any information from FSA about why it's taking so long?

I just checked with her and we've looked through her spam folder too - nothing there. I'm going to try calling FSA tomorrow to see if I can get more information.

Quick update based on some of the other comments - I should clarify that while the review is ongoing, colleges can still see the initial SAI that was calculated, but they might hold on finalizing aid packages until the review is complete. If the May 1 deadline is approaching, definitely contact the financial aid offices at each school. They can often work with preliminary information while waiting for the final FAFSA review to complete. Many schools are being more flexible with deposit deadlines this year specifically because of FAFSA delays.

This is incredibly helpful information. I'll definitely reach out to the schools. My daughter's top choice is actually her most expensive option, so we really need that financial aid package to make our decision.

That's encouraging! I'm hoping ours resolves quickly too. Did his SAI change after the review or did it stay the same?

I wanted to add that if this drags on for more than 2 weeks, you should definitely consider reaching out directly to Federal Student Aid. My second experience with the review lasted almost 3 weeks, and I regret not being more proactive about it. When I finally did get through to someone, they were able to expedite the process.

Those FSA phone lines are absolutely impossible though. I tried calling 6 times before I used Claimyr to connect. Regular calling just doesn't work with how overloaded their system is right now.

UPDATE: I finally got through to FSA this morning (used that Claimyr service someone recommended - worked great). They told me the review was triggered because my daughter's Social Security number had a one-digit mismatch with Social Security Administration records. Apparently this is happening to lots of people. They're correcting it on their end and said the review should be completed within 7-10 business days. Just wanted to update in case anyone else runs into this issue.

Thanks for sharing the update! This is exactly why it's important to follow up directly with FSA. Social Security number mismatches are one of the most common triggers for reviews, and they're often just typos or data entry errors on their end. Glad you got an answer and a timeline!

wow thats crazy! glad u got an answer tho. i wish theyd just TELL us when something goes into review instead of making everyone panic

This is such a relief to hear that you got answers! I'm dealing with a similar situation right now - my daughter's FAFSA went into review last week after we had already received her SAI. The lack of communication from FSA is incredibly frustrating, especially when college decision deadlines are looming. Thanks for sharing the Claimyr recommendation too - I've been dreading trying to call FSA directly because of the horror stories about wait times. It's reassuring to know that simple data mismatches seem to be causing a lot of these reviews rather than actual problems with our applications.

You're so welcome! I totally understand the frustration - the lack of communication really is the worst part. Claimyr was a lifesaver for me, definitely worth the small fee to avoid those crazy wait times. It sounds like so many of these reviews are just technical glitches or simple data mismatches rather than actual issues with our applications. Hopefully yours resolves quickly too! The agent I spoke with mentioned they're seeing a lot of these SSN mismatch cases this year, so you might want to ask about that specifically when you call.

This thread is so helpful! My son's FAFSA just went into review yesterday and I've been panicking about it affecting his aid packages. Reading everyone's experiences makes me feel much better - it sounds like these reviews are happening to a lot of families this year and most are resolving without major issues. I'm definitely going to try that Claimyr service if I need to call FSA, because waiting 2+ hours on hold sounds like torture. Thanks for sharing your update about the SSN mismatch too - it's crazy that such a small technical issue can cause so much stress for families!

I'm so glad this thread helped ease your worries! I was in the exact same panic mode when my daughter's status first changed. It really does seem like the FAFSA system is just overwhelmed this year and these reviews are much more common than they used to be. Definitely try Claimyr if you need to call - it was honestly a game changer for me. The peace of mind of actually getting answers was worth every penny. Fingers crossed your son's review clears up quickly! And you're absolutely right about how ridiculous it is that tiny technical glitches can cause so much family stress during an already stressful time.

Just wanted to jump in as someone who went through this exact same thing last month! My daughter's FAFSA went into review right after we got her SAI too, and I was absolutely freaking out about the timing with college deadlines approaching. After reading through all these comments, I'm realizing how common this has become this year - it's both frustrating and somewhat comforting to know we're not alone in dealing with these system issues. I ended up calling FSA using that Claimyr service (thanks to whoever mentioned it!) and found out it was also a Social Security number mismatch on their end. The whole thing resolved in about 10 days once I got through to someone who could actually explain what was happening. The lack of transparency from FSA about these reviews is really doing a disservice to families who are already stressed about college finances and deadlines.

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's incredibly reassuring to hear from someone who went through the exact same situation and came out the other side successfully. The SSN mismatch issue seems to be happening to so many families this year - it makes me wonder if there was some kind of system update or data migration that caused these discrepancies. I completely agree about FSA's lack of transparency being a huge problem. When families are already stressed about college costs and deadlines, the last thing we need is mysterious status changes with zero explanation. It's honestly ridiculous that we have to rely on third-party services like Claimyr just to get basic information about our own applications. I'm so glad your daughter's situation resolved quickly once you got answers!

I'm dealing with this exact situation right now too! My daughter's FAFSA went into review 3 days ago after we'd already gotten her SAI in February. The timing couldn't be worse with college decision deadlines coming up. Reading through all these comments is actually making me feel so much better - it sounds like this is happening to tons of families this year and most are getting resolved without major problems. I had no idea about the SSN mismatch issue being so common! I've been hesitant to call FSA because of the horror stories about wait times, but after seeing multiple people recommend Claimyr, I think I'm going to give it a try tomorrow. It's so frustrating that we have to jump through hoops just to find out what's going on with our own applications, but at least there seems to be a way to actually get answers. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - it's really helping reduce my stress level!

You're definitely not alone in this! I just joined this community because I'm going through the exact same thing with my son's FAFSA. It went into review status on Monday with no explanation, and I've been losing sleep over it ever since. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been such a relief - it sounds like these mysterious reviews are unfortunately becoming the norm this year rather than the exception. The SSN mismatch issue that several people mentioned is something I never would have thought of, but it makes sense given how many system changes FSA has made this year. I'm definitely going to try the Claimyr service too after seeing so many positive mentions. It's crazy that we need to use a third-party service just to get basic information about our own applications, but if it saves hours of waiting on hold, it seems worth it. Fingers crossed both our situations get resolved quickly!

I'm so glad I found this thread! My daughter's FAFSA just went into review yesterday after we received her SAI three weeks ago, and I've been in full panic mode thinking we did something wrong. Reading everyone's experiences has been incredibly reassuring - it sounds like these random reviews are unfortunately just part of the broken FAFSA system this year. The SSN mismatch issue that keeps coming up is fascinating and terrifying at the same time - who would have thought a simple data entry error on their end could cause so much family stress? I'm definitely going to try the Claimyr service based on all the recommendations here. It's absolutely ridiculous that FSA provides zero communication about why applications go into review, especially when families are dealing with tight college decision deadlines. Thank you all for sharing your stories and solutions - this community is a lifesaver during such a stressful time!

I'm in the exact same boat! My daughter's FAFSA went into review just two days ago after we got her SAI last month, and I've been frantically googling trying to figure out what went wrong. This thread has been such a lifesaver - I had no idea so many families were dealing with this same issue! The SSN mismatch explanation makes so much sense, especially with all the system changes FSA has made this year. It's honestly infuriating that they don't provide any explanation when the status changes - we shouldn't have to play detective to figure out what's happening with our own applications. I'm definitely going to try Claimyr tomorrow based on everyone's success stories here. Thank you all for sharing your experiences and making me feel less alone in this chaos!
