FAFSA login showing 'unknown error' message - anyone else locked out?
I've been trying to log into studentaid.gov for the past 2 days to finish my 2025-2026 FAFSA application and keep getting 'an unknown error has occurred' right after entering my FSA ID and password. I've tried using different browsers (Chrome, Firefox, even Edge), cleared my cookies, and even tried on my phone but keep hitting the same error. My application deadline is coming up fast and I'm freaking out a little. Is the site down or is it just me? Anyone else experiencing this or know how to fix it?

•That's somewhat reassuring I guess. Do you know if they announced any scheduled maintenance? I can't find anything about it on their Twitter.

I had this exact issue last week. The problem turned out to be that I had used the same FSA ID to log in from multiple IP addresses (home, school, and mobile) which triggered their security system. What fixed it for me was: 1. Use a private browsing/incognito window 2. Clear ALL browser data (not just cookies) 3. Reset my FSA ID password 4. Wait 30 minutes before trying again After doing this, I was able to get back in and finish submitting my SAI calculation for my grants. Hope this helps!

•Thank you! I'll try these steps right now. I have been switching between home wifi and cellular data, so that might be the issue!

•I did all this and STILL couldn't get in. Been locked out for 5 days now and about to miss my priority deadline for state grants. THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!!!

This happened to me right when I was trying to add my parents' W-2 information for my dependency verification. What worked for me was logging in using a completely different device that I'd never used before. My laptop wouldn't work but my roommate's computer did. Weird system, but worth trying if you have access to another computer.

This is actually a known issue right now affecting about 15% of FAFSA applicants according to the FSA helpline. The error typically happens when there's a mismatch between the information in your FSA ID profile and your application details, OR when the system is experiencing high traffic volumes. Your best options are: 1. Try logging in during off-peak hours (very early morning or late evening) 2. Make sure your browser accepts all cookies from studentaid.gov 3. Double-check that your name, DOB, and SSN exactly match across all your documents 4. If you're using a VPN, try disabling it If none of those work, you'll need to contact FSA directly to have them manually verify your identity and reset the security flags on your account.

•This is really helpful information, thank you! I'll try during off-peak hours tonight. Do you know what time they tend to have the lowest traffic?

•From what I've seen, the site seems to run best between 11pm-5am Eastern time. Most maintenance happens on Sunday nights, so avoid that time.

•EXACTLY! How are we supposed to get financial aid when their system is broken?? And then they'll blame us for missing deadlines!

I had this same problem when trying to complete my Parent PLUS loan application last week. After trying everything and wasting 3 days, I finally used this service called Claimyr to get through to an actual FSA agent on the phone (instead of waiting on hold forever). The agent was able to unlock my account immediately and explained it was a session token issue they've been seeing a lot lately. Check out their video demo at https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ - it saved me from missing my school's financial aid deadline. Their website is claimyr.com if you need to talk to a real person at FSA.

•Thank you! I've been on hold with FSA for over an hour today and gave up. I'll check this out if the overnight login attempt doesn't work.

UPDATE: I tried logging in at 2am like someone suggested and IT WORKED! I was able to get in and finish my application. For anyone else having this issue, definitely try during off-peak hours. Thanks everyone for your help!

I'm dealing with the same issue right now! Been locked out for 2 days trying to submit my FAFSA corrections. I noticed the error happens right after I enter my FSA ID credentials too. Based on what everyone's saying here, I'm going to try the late night login approach first, then maybe clear all my browser data and try a different device if that doesn't work. Really appreciate everyone sharing their solutions - it's reassuring to know it's not just me and that there are actual fixes that work!

•Hope the late night approach works for you! I was in the same boat a few weeks ago and it's so stressful when you're up against deadlines. If the overnight login doesn't work, I'd also recommend trying what Ezra suggested about resetting your FSA ID password and waiting 30 minutes before trying again. That combo of late night + fresh password reset seems to work for a lot of people. Good luck with your corrections!

I'm having the exact same problem! Started three days ago when I was trying to update my contact information after moving. The "unknown error" message appears right after I enter my FSA ID, just like everyone else is describing. I've tried different browsers and devices but no luck. Reading through all these responses is actually really helpful - I had no idea this was affecting so many people. I'm definitely going to try the late night login approach tonight around 2am since that worked for Taylor. If that doesn't work, I'll try the password reset method that Ezra mentioned. My school's priority deadline is next week so I'm getting pretty anxious about this. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences and solutions!

•I'm so glad I found this thread! I've been having the exact same issue for the past 4 days and was starting to panic about my deadline. It's crazy how many of us are dealing with this right now. I'm definitely going to try the 2am approach tonight - seems like that's been the most successful solution so far. If that doesn't work, I'll go through the full reset process that Ezra outlined. Really appreciate everyone sharing what worked for them instead of just complaining about the problem. Fingers crossed we can all get our applications sorted out before our deadlines!

I've been struggling with this exact same error for the past week! It's been so frustrating trying to complete my FAFSA renewal and hitting that "unknown error" wall every single time. Reading through everyone's solutions here gives me hope though. I'm planning to try the combination approach tonight - logging in around 1-2am AND using a completely fresh browser session with all data cleared. Has anyone noticed if certain browsers work better than others during these off-peak hours? I've been primarily using Chrome but wondering if Firefox or Safari might have better luck with their system. My state grant deadline is in 10 days so I really need to get this sorted out soon. Thanks to everyone who's shared what worked for them - this community is a lifesaver when the official support channels are so backed up!

•I've been dealing with this same issue for about a week now too! From what I've read in this thread, it seems like Chrome actually works fine during off-peak hours - the browser doesn't seem to matter as much as the timing and clearing your data completely. I'd definitely recommend trying the 1-2am approach with Chrome first since you're already familiar with it, and make sure to use incognito mode. If that doesn't work, then maybe try Firefox as a backup. The combination of late night + cleared data + incognito seems to be the winning formula based on everyone's success stories here. You've got 10 days which should be plenty of time to get this figured out! Let us know how it goes - I'm planning to try again tonight too.

I'm dealing with this exact same issue right now! Been trying to log in for the past 3 days to submit my verification documents and keep getting that "unknown error" message right after entering my FSA ID. It's so frustrating because my school's financial aid office keeps asking for updates and I can't even get into the system. Reading through all these solutions is really helpful though - I had no idea so many people were experiencing this. I'm definitely going to try the late night login approach tonight around 2am like Taylor suggested, and if that doesn't work I'll try the full browser reset and password change method that Ezra outlined. •I'm in the exact same boat! Been locked out for 4 days now trying to complete my dependency override appeal documents. It's really reassuring to see so many people having success with the late night approach - gives me hope that this isn't just a permanent account lock situation. I'm going to try logging in around midnight tonight and see if that works. If not, I'll definitely do the full reset process tomorrow. It's crazy how widespread this issue seems to be right now, but at least we have some proven solutions to work with. Hope you're able to get in tonight and submit your verification docs!

I've been having this exact same problem for the past 5 days! Started when I was trying to update my school list after getting accepted to a few more colleges. The "unknown error" keeps popping up right after I enter my FSA ID credentials, just like everyone else is describing. I've tried everything - different browsers, clearing cache, even borrowed my friend's laptop but still getting locked out. This thread is honestly a lifesaver because I was starting to think my account was permanently broken or something. I'm definitely going to try the 2am login approach tonight based on Taylor's success, and if that doesn't work I'll do the full password reset and wait 30 minutes like Ezra suggested. My priority filing deadline is in two weeks so I still have some time, but the stress is real! Thanks to everyone who shared actual solutions instead of just complaining - you all are amazing and giving me hope that this is fixable!

•I'm so glad you found this thread too! I've been lurking here for a couple days dealing with the same exact issue - got locked out while trying to add my dependency override documentation. It's honestly such a relief to see that this is a widespread problem with actual solutions rather than something wrong with my specific account. The late night approach seems to be working for most people, so definitely try that first. I'm planning to attempt it around 1am tonight myself. If the timing thing doesn't work, the password reset method that Ezra described seems to be the next best option. Two weeks should be plenty of time to get this sorted out - you're in better shape than some of us who are down to just a few days! Fingers crossed we all get through this system mess soon.

I'm experiencing the exact same issue! Been locked out for 4 days now trying to submit my income verification documents. The "unknown error" message appears right after I enter my FSA ID, just like everyone else here. It's actually really comforting to know this is a widespread problem and not just my account being broken. I've tried different browsers and devices with no luck, but reading through all these solutions gives me hope. I'm definitely going to try the late night login approach around 2am tonight since that worked for Taylor, and if that fails I'll do the full password reset method that Ezra outlined. My school's priority deadline is next Friday so I'm cutting it close, but at least now I have actual strategies to try instead of just randomly attempting to log in throughout the day. Thanks everyone for sharing what worked - this thread is way more helpful than the official FSA support right now!

•I'm dealing with this too! Been locked out for 3 days trying to complete my verification process. It's so frustrating but really helpful to see all these solutions in one place. I'm going to try the 2am approach tonight as well - seems like that's been the most successful method so far. If that doesn't work, I'll definitely try the password reset and 30-minute wait that several people mentioned. Good luck with your Friday deadline! At least we have a week to work through these different solutions.

•I'm so glad I found this thread! I've been having the exact same problem for the past 3 days trying to update my dependency status information. That "unknown error" message keeps appearing right after I enter my FSA ID credentials, and I was starting to worry my account was permanently locked or something. Reading through everyone's solutions here is really reassuring - it's clearly a system-wide issue rather than individual account problems. I'm definitely going to try the 2am login approach tonight since it worked for Taylor and so many others. If that doesn't work, I'll do the password reset and wait 30 minutes like Ezra suggested. My priority deadline is in 8 days so I still have some wiggle room, but the stress is definitely building! •I'm in the same exact situation! Been locked out for 2 days trying to submit my updated bank account information and getting that same "unknown error" right after entering my FSA ID. This thread has been such a relief to find - I was starting to panic thinking my account was permanently broken or something. The late night approach seems to be the most consistently successful solution based on everyone's experiences here. I'm planning to try logging in around 1:30am tonight and see if that works. If not, I'll definitely try the password reset method that Ezra mentioned. My deadline is in 9 days so I'm in a similar timeframe as you. Fingers crossed we both get through tonight - thanks for sharing your experience and good luck!
