FAFSA website login issues - is the system down for maintenance?

I've been trying to log into my FAFSA account for the past 3 hours to check my SAI score and make some updates to my 2025-2026 application. Every time I enter my FSA ID and password, the page just refreshes and nothing happens. No error message, no indication of what's wrong. It's like the submit button isn't actually doing anything! I've tried: - Using Chrome, Firefox and even Edge (desperate times...) - Clearing cookies and cache - Restarting my computer - Using my phone instead Nothing works! Is studentaid.gov down for everyone or just me? Anyone else having this issue right now? I really need to get this updated before my college's priority deadline on Friday!!

Good to know it's not just me! Have you heard anything about scheduled maintenance or when it might be back up?

I just got in after trying for about 45 minutes. The site is definitely having issues today. Keep trying and you'll eventually get through. Make sure you're using the correct FSA ID too - I accidentally was using my mom's since she's a contributor on my application and it kept refreshing the page just like you described.

Thanks for the tip! I double-checked and I'm definitely using my FSA ID. I'll keep trying though. Did it just suddenly start working for you or did you do something different?

It just randomly started working after multiple attempts - no changes on my end. The FAFSA system has been extra glitchy since they redesigned everything for the 2025-2026 application cycle.

This happens pretty regularly with the FAFSA site, especially during high-traffic periods. End of the month and beginning of the month tend to be the worst times. The Department of Education doesn't always post notices about these outages either, which is incredibly frustrating. A few things to try: 1. Wait about 15 minutes between login attempts. Multiple attempts in a short timeframe can trigger temporary IP blocks. 2. Try during off-peak hours - very early morning (5-7am) or late evening (after 10pm). 3. Check if your browsers have any extensions that might be interfering with the site functionality. 4. Try the FSA ID recovery process even if you know your login - sometimes this refreshes something in their system. If you absolutely need to get in before Friday's deadline, document your attempts with screenshots. Most financial aid offices will grant extensions if you can prove the federal system was having issues.

I've had this EXACT same issue for the past week!! So frustrating! I finally got through yesterday after literally 3 days of trying. What worked for me was using an incognito browser window and making sure I typed my FSA ID manually instead of using autofill. For some reason the autofill was adding a space at the end of my username that I couldn't see. Also - I called FSA and was on hold for TWO HOURS before getting disconnected. Then tried again and waited another hour before giving up. Their phone system is just as broken as their website.

I'll definitely try the incognito window trick! Never thought about autofill adding invisible spaces, that's a good catch. Did you have to call them eventually or did the incognito method solve it for you?

The incognito window fixed it for me! I never actually got through to anyone on the phone after multiple attempts.

I'm an advisor at a community college financial aid office, and we've been hearing about widespread login issues today and yesterday. It's not just you! The Department of Education rarely announces these outages in advance, which is incredibly frustrating for everyone. From what I understand, they're making backend changes to prepare for the second FAFSA verification batch that's happening next week. If you have a pressing deadline, I recommend: 1. Contact your school's financial aid office directly and explain the situation 2. Document your attempts with screenshots showing error messages or the page refreshing 3. Try again during early morning hours (3am-6am) when server load is lowest Most schools will work with you if federal systems are down. This has been an especially challenging year with all the FAFSA simplification changes and schools are generally being more flexible with deadlines.

Thank you so much for the insider perspective! I'll reach out to my school's financial aid office tomorrow if I still can't get in. Do you know if this might affect my SAI calculation timing? I submitted my application 3 weeks ago but haven't received the official calculation yet.

System outages shouldn't affect your SAI calculation timeframe - those are processed in batches regardless of whether you can log in or not. However, if you needed to make corrections that could potentially delay things. Most students are seeing 3-4 week processing times for initial SAI calculations right now, so you should see yours very soon!

I had this same problem last week! It was SO frustrating. I even reset my password twice thinking that was the issue, but it didn't help at all. The FAFSA website is honestly the worst government website I've ever used, and that's saying something. I finally got in by using my friend's WiFi instead of mine. No idea why that worked but it did. Maybe try a different internet connection if possible? Also if you absolutely NEED to speak with someone at Federal Student Aid, I discovered this service called Claimyr that helped me skip the phone queue. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ Basically they wait on hold for you and call you when an agent is ready. It saved me hours of listening to that terrible hold music. The agent I finally spoke with confirmed they were having widespread login issues and suggested I try again in 24-48 hours.

Thanks for the suggestion! I might try using my phone's hotspot instead of my regular WiFi. That service sounds really helpful - I'll check it out if I can't get in by tomorrow. Did the agent give you any explanation for why the system was having issues?

Nope, just the usual "we're experiencing technical difficulties" line. No real explanation or ETA for a fix. Government tech at its finest!

maybe they dont WANT u to finish ur application lol less people = less money they gotta give out

RIGHT!?!? its a conspiracy to make the process so awful that students give up and they save billions!!!

While the technical issues are definitely frustrating, the Department of Education isn't trying to prevent students from completing applications. In fact, they've been pushing to increase FAFSA completion rates because many eligible students miss out on aid. The recent FAFSA simplification efforts were specifically designed to make the process more accessible, though unfortunately the implementation has had technical challenges.

Okay so a friend just texted me that she got in after calling FSA and apparently there's a technical issue with certain accounts where the 2-factor authentication is stuck in some kind of loop? They had to reset something on their end for her account. Might be worth calling for that specific issue!

That's really helpful info! Maybe that's what's happening with my account too. I'll try calling tomorrow. Did she mention how long she was on hold?

She said about 90 minutes 🙄 Ridiculous but better than not getting in at all I guess

UPDATE: It's working again for me now! Just got in no problem. Try again, the site might be back to normal!

Just tried again and it worked! FINALLY! Thanks for the update. Looks like whatever issues they were having must be resolved now.

I'm dealing with the exact same issue! Been trying to log in for hours with no luck. Really glad to see from the recent updates that it's working again for some people - I'll keep trying. This whole FAFSA redesign has been such a nightmare this year. For anyone still having trouble, I've also heard that sometimes clearing your browser's stored passwords and typing everything manually can help, especially if there are any hidden characters or spaces saved in your login info. Fingers crossed this gets fully resolved soon!
