FAFSA confusion: Signed 2024/25 form but got 2023/24 confirmation email

I'm totally confused about what's happening with my daughter's FAFSA. Last night I completed and signed the parent portion for the 2024/25 application. Today my daughter logged into her account and signed her part. But here's the weird part - I just got an email confirmation saying she signed the 2023/24 FAFSA! How is that even possible? She didn't even have a studentaid.gov account last year as she was still in high school. Is this just an email glitch or did something go wrong with her application? Will this mess up her financial aid? She's counting on this for her freshman year starting this fall.

This is actually a pretty common FSA system glitch right now. Many parents are getting confused by these mismatched confirmation emails. The important thing is to log back into studentaid.gov and check which application actually shows as completed in your dashboard. If it shows the 2024/25 FAFSA as "Submitted" or "Processed" with both signatures, you should be fine despite the email error.

Omg thank you! Just checked and you're right - the dashboard shows 2024/25 as "Processing" with both signatures. Such a relief! But why would they send emails with the wrong year? Seems like a pretty basic thing to get right.

That's nothing. I submitted my 2024/25 FAFSA in January and got THREE identical confirmation emails, then nothing for weeks. Called FSA and they told me my application was never received! Had to redo the entire thing. This new "simplified" system is a complete joke.

Did u save the confirmation number from when ur daughter submitted? They should have given u one. If u have that, ur good even if the email is wrong. Keep it somewhere safe bc u might need it later if theres problems.

I don't think we saw any confirmation number after she signed... now I'm worried again. Where exactly would that have appeared? On the last screen or in a separate email?

The email year discrepancy is definitely a known issue with the new FAFSA system. The good news is that the back-end processing should be correct even if the email notification has the wrong year. Here's what you should do: 1. Take screenshots of your dashboard showing the 2024/25 application status 2. Note your confirmation number (if available) 3. Wait about 3-5 business days for processing 4. Check that your SAI calculation appears If after a week you don't see a Student Aid Index (SAI) calculation or the application status doesn't change from "Processing" to "Processed," then you may need to contact Federal Student Aid directly.

Thank you for the detailed steps! I'll definitely take screenshots. Do you know how long processing typically takes? Her college's priority deadline for financial aid is coming up soon.

Processing time varies, but with the new system, it's generally taking 7-10 days for most applicants. If you're approaching a school's priority deadline, I'd recommend contacting the school's financial aid office directly to explain the situation. Most schools are aware of the FAFSA delays this year and may offer extensions. As for reaching Federal Student Aid if needed, many people have had trouble with the 1-800 number due to high call volume. I've heard people have had success using Claimyr.com to get through faster when they need to speak to someone. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

i second this advice about contacting the schools financial aid office!! my daughter had similar issues and her school gave her a 2 week extension on submitting everything once i explained the situation

Hi there! I work in a college financial aid office, and I can tell you we're seeing this exact issue quite frequently. The email system sending incorrect year references is a known bug. What matters most is what's in the actual FAFSA processing system. The best verification is to check your Student Aid Report (SAR) when it becomes available. That will explicitly state which award year it applies to. Also, if your dashboard shows the 2024/25 application as submitted/processing with both signatures, that's definitive confirmation that the correct application year is in process regardless of email glitches.

Thank you for this insider perspective! It's reassuring to know colleges are aware of these issues. How long should it take for the SAR to become available after both signatures are completed?

The SAR should be available within 3-7 days after submission in normal circumstances. However, with the current processing delays in the new system, we're seeing it take 7-14 days for some students. You'll receive another email when the SAR is ready (hopefully with the correct year this time!). You can then view it by logging into studentaid.gov and going to "My Documents." One important thing to note: make sure your daughter checks both her email AND her spam/junk folders for communications from Federal Student Aid. We've seen many important emails getting filtered there.

Will do! I'll make sure she checks all folders. The whole process is so much more complicated than when I filled out FAFSA years ago. Thanks again for your help!
