Cal Grant A showing as pending in CSAC portal - can't save graduation date

I'm completely lost trying to navigate the California Student Aid Commission portal after submitting my FAFSA. My daughter has a Cal Grant A listed as 'pending' with some items we need to complete. One requirement is entering her graduation date, but when we try to input it, the system says 'graduation dates will be available after May' and won't save what we enter. Is this normal timing because graduation hasn't happened yet? I'm cautiously optimistic since we didn't expect to qualify for any grants at all (our household income is around $98,500). Has anyone else seen this message? Do we just wait until May to finish this step, or is there something else we should be doing? This grant would cover most of her tuition at UC Riverside where she's planning to attend while living in campus housing.

I had the EXACT same issue with my son's CSAC account last year! It's totally normal - they don't let you enter the grad date until after May because they're still loading high school graduation info into their system. Just keep checking back every few days. Once the system updates, you'll be able to save the date and that pending item will clear. Don't stress about it!

Thank you so much! That's a relief. So there's nothing we need to do right now other than wait? I'm worried about missing deadlines.

dont worry bout it. my kid had same thing happen last yr. they just make u wait til they got all the hs graduation stuff in the system. its dumb but thats how they do it

Thanks! Good to know we're not doing something wrong. The whole financial aid system is so confusing.

This is a standard process with the California Student Aid Commission. Their system updates with graduation verification data from California high schools during May. Until then, the system will show the message you're seeing. Your Cal Grant A status will remain pending until this verification occurs. A few important points: - Continue checking the portal weekly - Ensure ALL other requirements are completed while waiting - After May, you should be able to enter and SAVE the graduation date - If by May 20th you still can't enter the date, contact CSAC directly Cal Grant A awards for 2025-2026 cover up to $14,742 for UC system students, so it's definitely worth making sure you complete all requirements.

Thank you for the detailed explanation! $14,742 would be amazing - that would cover about 75% of her tuition. I'll make sure we complete everything else while we wait. Do you know if they notify you when you can input the graduation date, or do we just need to keep checking?

I went through this NIGHTMARE last year!!! They say May but for my son it wasn't until June 3rd that we could actually enter the date!!! And then they rejected his grant because they said we missed some deadline even though their system wouldn't let us enter the info!! Had to appeal and it was AWFUL. The whole Cal Grant system is BROKEN!! Make sure you document EVERYTHING and take screenshots showing it's not letting you save the date.

Oh no, that sounds terrible! I'll definitely start taking screenshots. Did your appeal work out in the end?

Yes but it took FOREVER. Like 3 months of back and forth. The worst part was not being able to get anyone on the phone. I'd wait for hours and then get disconnected. So frustrating!!!

Have you tried calling CSAC directly? Their system does have this limitation in early spring, but sometimes they can manually note your account. It's worth calling to confirm your daughter's application is otherwise in good standing. I've worked with several families who were able to resolve similar issues by speaking directly with a CSAC representative. If you're having trouble getting through on their phone lines (which is common), you might want to try Claimyr (claimyr.com). They have a service that helps you get through to government agencies like CSAC without waiting on hold for hours. I used it to get through to Federal Student Aid last semester when my daughter had FAFSA verification issues. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ

Thank you for the suggestion! I've tried calling twice but kept getting disconnected after waiting for 45+ minutes. I'll check out that service - at this point, I just need to speak to someone to make sure we're not missing anything important.

UPDATE: I finally managed to speak with someone at CSAC today! The representative confirmed that they're still loading graduation data into their system from last Friday, so many students are experiencing this issue. She recommended checking the portal daily to input the graduation date once it becomes available. Feeling much better now knowing this is normal and not something we're doing wrong.

Great news! Thanks for updating the thread. This is exactly the standard timeline I mentioned. Keep checking daily and you should be able to complete that requirement soon. Make sure to verify that the date actually SAVES after entering it - that's a common issue people encounter.

Did they tell you how long we're supposed to wait? My daughter is in the same situation and we keep checking but it still says the same thing about waiting until May. I'm starting to get anxious because we need to make a college decision soon.

btw dont get 2 excited yet. my kid was pending for cal grant too but then they denied him bc our income was like 2k over the limit. said our assets were 2 high or something. the whole system is confusing af

Thanks for the reality check. We're trying not to count on it until it's official. Did they explain which income/asset limits they used? Our savings are modest but we do have some equity in our home.

they looked at our tax returns n savings. home equity doesnt count for cal grant i think. but yeah just dont tell ur kid its 100% happening til u see the final approval

For those following this thread, here's a quick calendar of important Cal Grant dates for 2025-2026: - Mid-May: High school graduation data typically finishes loading - June 2: Final deadline for submitting any corrections or updates - Early July: First round of official award notifications - September: Funds begin disbursing to colleges Remember that Cal Grant A has both GPA and financial requirements. For the 2025-2026 year, the income ceiling for a family of four is approximately $113,000, with asset ceilings around $88,000 (excluding primary residence and retirement accounts).

This timeline is incredibly helpful! Thank you. Our family income is about $98,500 with four of us, and assets outside our home are under $35,000, so it sounds like we might actually qualify. Fingers crossed!

I'm in the exact same boat with my son! His Cal Grant A is showing pending and we can't save his graduation date either. Reading through all these responses is so reassuring - I was starting to panic that we had missed something important. It's frustrating that the system won't let you complete the requirements when you're trying to be responsible and get everything done early. I'm going to start taking screenshots like someone suggested, just in case we run into issues later. Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences - this community is a lifesaver for navigating all this financial aid confusion!

Welcome to the club! I'm so glad I found this thread too - I was starting to think we were the only ones dealing with this issue. It's such a relief to know this is normal and we're not doing anything wrong. The screenshot idea is brilliant - I wish I had thought of that earlier. It really is frustrating that the system makes you wait when you're trying to be proactive, but at least now we know what to expect. Good luck with your son's application!

I'm dealing with the exact same issue right now! My daughter's Cal Grant A is showing pending and we keep getting that "graduation dates will be available after May" message. It's so frustrating when you're trying to get everything done early and the system won't let you complete the requirements. Reading through everyone's experiences here has been incredibly helpful - I was starting to worry we had done something wrong or missed an important step. I'm definitely going to start taking screenshots like others suggested, and it's reassuring to know this is just how their system works. Thanks to everyone who shared their timelines and advice. It's amazing how much stress this community can help relieve when you're navigating all this financial aid paperwork for the first time!

You're definitely not alone in this! It's such a common experience and honestly shows how many of us are dealing with the same confusing system. I love that this thread has become like a support group for parents trying to figure out Cal Grant requirements. The screenshot advice is so smart - I'm going to go back and take some now too, just in case. It really does feel good to know we're all in the same boat and that this waiting period is totally normal. Here's hoping all our kids get their graduation dates accepted once the system updates in May!

This thread has been so helpful! I'm a newcomer to all this financial aid stuff and was completely panicking when I saw my son's Cal Grant A showing as pending with that same graduation date error message. I've been refreshing the CSAC portal every few hours thinking I was missing some deadline or doing something wrong. It's such a relief to read that this is totally normal timing and that the system just won't let you enter the date until May. I feel so much better knowing other families are going through the exact same thing. I'm definitely going to take screenshots starting today and keep checking back weekly like everyone suggested. Thank you all for sharing your experiences - this community is amazing for first-time parents navigating this process!

Welcome to the community! I'm so glad you found this thread before stressing out too much. I was doing the exact same thing - refreshing that portal constantly and wondering what I was missing. It's crazy how the system doesn't give you any heads up that this waiting period is normal. Reading everyone's experiences here has been such a game changer. The screenshot advice is definitely worth following - better safe than sorry with these government systems! It sounds like you're on the right track now. Keep us posted on how it goes when May rolls around!
