FAFSA CalGrant stuck at GPA verification stage - when will funds disburse?
I submitted my FAFSA back in December and my CalGrant status is STILL showing as just having my GPA verified, nothing else. My school's financial aid portal doesn't show any disbursement dates for the CalGrant either. I'm starting to panic because I've got rent due in 3 weeks and was counting on that money. Has anyone else experienced delays with their CalGrant this year? I swear last year's application moved faster. Do I need to contact someone or just keep waiting?

•Glad I'm not alone but sorry you're dealing with this too! Have you tried calling the CalGrant office? I'm wondering if it's worth the hassle or if everyone's just delayed.

The CalGrant system is experiencing significant processing delays this year due to the new FAFSA changes. Many students are stuck in this limbo stage. Your GPA verification is actually a good sign - it means your application is in their system but waiting for the final SAI calculation from FAFSA to determine your award amount. If your FAFSA shows as processed (not just submitted), you should try contacting the California Student Aid Commission directly at 888-224-7268 to ask about your specific status.

•Thank you! That's helpful context. My FAFSA does show as processed with an SAI score, so it seems weird that CalGrant hasn't picked it up yet. I'll try calling them tomorrow.

I know it's frustrating, but don't panic yet! I work in financial aid at a CA community college and we're seeing TONS of delayed CalGrants this year. The system is backed up because of all the FAFSA changes. As long as your FAFSA is processed and your GPA is verified, the award will eventually come through. Many schools are also offering emergency loans to students waiting on delayed aid - check with your financial aid office!

•Thanks for the insider perspective! That makes me feel better. I didn't know about emergency loans - I'll definitely ask about that tomorrow when I go to the financial aid office.

i waited 7 weeks for mine to update beyond just the gpa stage, and then suddenly it appeared with my award amount last week. the waiting is THE WORST but hang in there

•7 weeks?! Ugh, that's forever when you're counting on the money. But it's reassuring that yours eventually came through. Fingers crossed mine updates soon.

I've been helping students with this exact CalGrant issue all month. The verification delays are happening because CSAC (CA Student Aid Commission) is still adapting their systems to process the new FAFSA format and SAI calculations. Here's what you can do: 1. Double-check that your college is listed on your FAFSA 2. Make sure your CA Dream Act Application is linked to your FAFSA if applicable 3. Verify your GPA submission date (must be before the March 2 deadline) 4. Contact CSAC directly about your specific status For the fastest response from CSAC, I've found that using Claimyr (claimyr.com) gets you through to a live agent in minutes instead of waiting on hold for hours. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/TbC8dZQWYNQ. It's been a lifesaver for my students who need immediate answers about their CalGrant status.

•Thank you for such specific advice! I'll check all these things. My GPA was definitely submitted before the deadline because I can see it in my account. I've never heard of Claimyr before but I'll check it out - anything to avoid being on hold for hours!

This is so annoying! The whole point of financial aid is to help us BEFORE school starts, not weeks into the term when we're already struggling. The CalGrant system is a JOKE. I had to take out an extra loan last semester because my CalGrant was delayed by 2 months. The interest on that loan is still costing me money even though my grant eventually came through. The system is broken.

I've been dealing with the CalGrant system for 3 years now, and honestly, this is pretty normal. It's frustrating, but here's what I've learned: the GPA verification is just step 1, then they have to match it with your FAFSA, then determine eligibility, then calculate the amount, then send it to your school, THEN your school has to process it before disbursement. Each step can take 1-2 weeks. My advice? Talk to your school's financial aid office about an emergency advance against your expected aid. Most schools have some kind of short-term loan program for exactly this situation. It saved me last year when my CalGrant was late.

•Wow, thanks for breaking down all those steps - I had no idea it was that complicated. I'll definitely ask about an emergency advance. That could be a huge help while I wait.

I'm going through the exact same thing right now! My CalGrant has been stuck at GPA verification for over a month and I'm getting really anxious about my tuition payment deadline. Reading through these comments is actually really helpful - I had no idea about emergency loans or that this was such a widespread issue this year. I'm definitely going to call my school's financial aid office tomorrow to ask about short-term assistance while we wait for these CalGrants to finally process. It's frustrating that we're all dealing with this but at least we're not alone!

•You're definitely not alone in this! I'm also dealing with the same CalGrant delay and it's such a relief to see that so many people are experiencing this. The advice about emergency loans from the financial aid office seems like a lifesaver - I'm planning to ask about that too. Hopefully we'll all see our CalGrants update soon, but at least now I know there are options to help bridge the gap while we wait!
