Will working my part-time job the day before filing ESD claim affect my benefits?

Just found out I'm getting laid off this Friday when my full-time contract ends. I've got a second job I work maybe 10-15 days per year, and they want me to come in this Saturday. I was planning to file my unemployment claim on Sunday (the 30th). Will working this part-time gig the day before I file mess up my initial claim somehow? I'm completely new to ESD and have no idea about the timing rules or if this could reduce my benefits. Also wondering what documents/paperwork I should have ready when I file my claim. My main job was paying $63K annually if that matters. Any advice appreciated!

You should be fine working your part-time job on Saturday before filing. When you file your initial claim, you'll need to report ALL employment from the past 18 months, including both jobs. You'll also need to report any hours/earnings in the week you're claiming (Sun-Sat). Make sure you have: - Social Security number - Driver's license or state ID - Names, addresses, phone numbers, and employment dates for ALL employers in the past 18 months - Your bank account info for direct deposit Just be 100% honest about your work history and current part-time job. ESD calculates your benefit based on your highest-earning quarters, likely from your full-time job. The part-time work will just cause a partial reduction for weeks you report those hours.

Thank you so much! That's really helpful. So when I file on Sunday, I'll need to report Saturday's hours even though I haven't been paid for them yet, right? Also - do I need to provide actual pay stubs from my employers or do they verify employment some other way?

i got laid off 3 months ago. make sure u report ANY work or they will come after u later for fraud. happened to my cousin who forgot to mention a side gig and now they want $4200 back!! also the esd website is super glitchy on sundays when everyone files fyi

Yikes, that's scary about your cousin! I'll definitely report everything. Thanks for the heads up about Sunday traffic - maybe I'll file Monday morning instead.

JUst be aware that when you work that Sat job, you MUST report those earnings when you file your weekly claim for that week (even if you havent been paid yet). They go by when you WORKED not when you get paid. Also your benefit amount will probably be reduced for that week because of the part-time income, but its still worth filing!!! Don't try to hide income or they audit you later and its a NIGHTMARE. Trust me, been there.

That's correct about reporting when you worked vs. when you get paid. Just to clarify though - the initial application is different from weekly claims. For the initial application, you're just setting up your claim and providing your work history. Then you'll start filing weekly claims after that, where you'll report any work/earnings for each week.

Has anyone here used Claimyr to get through to ESD when filing a new claim? I spent literally 6 days trying to reach someone when my account had verification issues. Finally used this service at claimyr.com that got me connected to an actual ESD agent in about 15 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Honestly wish I'd known about it sooner because I was getting nowhere with the regular phone line.

does that actually work? ive been calling for 2 days straight and cant get thru. keep getting the "call volume too high" message then it hangs up on me 😠

Yes, it worked for me. The regular ESD line kept disconnecting me too because of "high call volume" but Claimyr got me through. Not sure how they do it exactly, but I finally talked to someone who resolved my issue.

I want to add that when you file, you need to be available for full-time work to qualify for benefits. So if your part-time job restricts your availability too much, that might be an issue. But working occasional Saturday shifts shouldn't affect your eligibility as long as you're available for full-time work the rest of the time. Also, remember that in Washington you need to document at least three job search activities each week. The WorkSource workshops count towards this requirement if you're having trouble finding enough job postings to apply to.

The job search requirement is really good to know - thanks! My part-time gig is super flexible and I just pick up shifts occasionally when they need extra help. I'm definitely available and looking for full-time work, so that shouldn't be a problem.

When I got laid off in February, my claim got stuck in adjudication for almost 2 months because my former employer contested it (even though it was clearly a layoff). If that happens to you, call ESD immediately and try to figure out what the issue is. Don't just wait like I did assuming they'll figure it out on their own.

2 MONTHS?!?! omg thats insane how did u pay bills??

ppl are saying report all jobs but i think theres a min dollar amount b4 u have to report it? like if u made under $50 in a week u dont have to?? anyone know 4 sure??

No, that's incorrect. You must report ALL earnings, even if it's just $1. There's no minimum threshold. ESD cross-references with employer tax records, so they'll find out if you earned anything you didn't report.

Another thing - if youre signing up for the first time, WRITE DOWN YOUR SECURITY QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS EXACTLY!!! The system is super picky and if you forget how you capitalized something or used punctuation, you can get locked out of your account for DAYS. Ask me how I know lol 🤦‍♂️

Excellent tip - thank you! I'll definitely write everything down. I tend to forget exactly how I phrase security answers, so this could've been a real problem for me.
