When to file initial ESD application - last day is Friday, claim now or wait for new week?
Hey ESD folks, I'm about to be laid off and I'm trying to time my application right so I don't mess anything up. My final day at work is this Friday (August 30th, 2025) and my shift ends at 5pm. I've never filed for unemployment before and I'm not sure when I should submit my initial application. Should I: 1. File immediately after my shift ends on Friday? 2. Wait until Saturday when I'm officially unemployed? 3. Hold off until Sunday since that's the start of a new ESD claim week? I'm worried about making a mistake that could delay my benefits. Does timing really matter? Will I get paid for partial weeks? Any advice from people who've been through this would be super helpful! Thanks in advance!

You should wait until Sunday to file your initial claim. That's the start of the ESD claim week, and it will make your weekly claims much cleaner going forward. If you file on Friday, you'll still be employed that day, and if you file Saturday, you'll have a partial week which can complicate things. You won't lose any benefits by waiting until Sunday to file.

•Thanks! That makes sense. So even though I'll be unemployed starting Saturday, waiting until Sunday won't cause me to lose any potential benefits for that one day?

•Same! I filed on a Thursday and didn't have any issues, though I think the ESD rep said something about the claim week. Honestly, the system let me do it whenever so 🤷♀️

The correct answer is you can file your initial application any day after your last day of work. However, there are good reasons to consider Sunday: 1. ESD's claim week runs Sunday-Saturday, so filing on Sunday gives you a clean start for your first week 2. If you file Friday evening, you're technically still employed that day 3. If you file Saturday, you'll have a one-day partial week which might complicate your first weekly claim You won't lose benefits by waiting until Sunday, and it generally makes the process smoother. Just make sure you file your initial application within the first week of unemployment to avoid losing potential benefits.

•This is exactly what I needed to know, thank you! I'll wait until Sunday to make everything cleaner. One follow-up question - does it matter what time on Sunday I apply? Is earlier better?

Time of day doesn't matter for your initial application. The system processes applications in batches, not instantly. Just make sure you have all your information ready: - Social Security Number - Employment history for the past 18 months (company names, addresses, phone numbers) - Last day worked - Reason for separation - Bank information if you want direct deposit The application takes about 30-45 minutes to complete if you have everything ready.

•Perfect, thank you! I'll get all that information together before I start on Sunday.

When I got laid off last year I waited til Sunday and I'm glad I did. Made everything way easier for weekly claims going forward. The whole system is confusing enough without adding partial weeks!

Actually, I tried to be smart about this and waited until Sunday when I got laid off, but then the website kept crashing and I couldn't get through until TUESDAY!! Then they asked me why I didn't file immediately and almost disqualified me for "late filing" even though it was THEIR system that was down!!! The ESD system is a NIGHTMARE to deal with. Just file as soon as you can and DOCUMENT EVERYTHING including taking screenshots of any errors if they happen!!!

•I had the same problem with the website crashing! I ended up having to call them, but of course, their phone lines were jammed. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an ESD agent in under 25 minutes when I'd been trying for days on my own. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Totally worth it when you're desperate to get your claim filed or fixed!

I remember being confused about this too! Sunday is definitely best since that's when the claim week starts. But don't stress too much - the most important thing is just getting your claim in within the first week after your last day. Good luck with everything!

dose anyone know if u have to do the work search requirements in the first week? i forget if thats a thing

•No, you don't need to complete job search activities during the week you file your initial claim (called the "waiting week"). Job search requirements (3 activities per week) start the following week. The waiting week is unpaid, but you still need to file a weekly claim for it.

One thing nobody has mentioned: make sure you've completely finished your last day before filing. If you file at 5pm on Friday while technically still employed (even if it's your last hour), you could be flagged for misrepresentation which is a huge headache to fix. Sunday is safer, gives you time to decompress from your last day, and aligns with the ESD claim week. You'll get paid the same either way, so why risk complications?

•That's a good point I hadn't considered about misrepresentation. Definitely don't want to deal with that! Sunday it is.

My daughter works at ESD and she always tells people to file on Sunday for a clean start to the claim week. Makes the whole process smoother for everyone! Also remember that your first week is a waiting week (unpaid) but you STILL have to file a weekly claim for it or your claim can get messed up.

Thanks everyone for the helpful advice! I'm going to wait until Sunday to file my initial claim. It seems like that's the best approach to avoid complications with partial weeks. I'll make sure to have all my employment information ready and set aside enough time to complete the application thoroughly. I'll also remember to file for that first "waiting week" even though it's unpaid. Really appreciate all your insights!

•Good plan! Feel free to come back if you have questions during the process. The first application can be a bit overwhelming but it gets easier after that.
