Will ESD process my 6-week benefits claim even though I found full-time work?

So I got laid off from my primary job 7 weeks ago but kept working my part-time gig (about 15 hours weekly). I immediately filed for unemployment and got approved, but ESD still hasn't paid me anything for those 6 weeks I was eligible. The holdup is that my part-time employer is being super slow providing some verification ESD requested. Just found out they haven't even responded to ESD's requests! The good news is I just started a new full-time position this week, so I'm employed again. But I'm wondering - will ESD still process my claim for those 6 weeks I was legitimately eligible? I reported all my part-time earnings for each weekly claim as required. Will they just consider it a wash since I'm working full-time now, or will they eventually make a determination and potentially pay me for those weeks? I could really use that back-payment to catch up on bills that piled up while I was underemployed.

They will absolutely still process those 6 weeks! Your current employment status has nothing to do with weeks you were eligible in the past. I went through something similar last year - was unemployed for 8 weeks, then found work, and ESD still paid me for the eligible weeks about a month after I started my new job. The fact that you reported all your part-time earnings during those weeks is perfect - you did everything right. Just make sure your claim doesn't get closed for inactivity now that you're working again. You might want to call them to check on the status.

That's such a relief to hear! I was worried they might just close my file since I'm employed now. Any idea how much longer it might take? It's been 7 weeks already with no payment.

4 MONTHS?! I can't wait that long - I'm already behind on my car payment because of this delay. Guess I need to find a way to contact them.

This is a very common situation! ESD will absolutely continue processing your claim for the weeks you were eligible, regardless of your current employment status. The issue you're describing is what's called an "employer response delay" in the system. Here's what's happening: When you have multiple employers within your base year or you're working part-time while claiming benefits, ESD needs to verify details with all employers. If one employer drags their feet (which happens ALL the time), it puts your whole claim in limbo. Some key points: 1. Your claim remains valid for those 6 weeks you certified 2. You should eventually receive all benefits you're entitled to, even retroactively 3. Your new job doesn't impact your eligibility for the weeks you were partially unemployed 4. The part-time earnings you reported will reduce your weekly benefit amount for those weeks, but not eliminate it entirely I recommend contacting ESD directly to check on the status. They can sometimes move things along if you explain the situation.

Thank you for such a detailed explanation! This is exactly what I needed to understand. Do you know if there's a deadline after which they won't process these claims anymore? I'm worried about waiting too long.

ESD is THE WORST with this stuff. They owed me $4700 for months even after I found work and I had to literally get my state representative involved before they paid me. Their system is broken and they don't care about people struggling!!!!

If you need to reach ESD quickly about this, I'd recommend using Claimyr (claimyr.com). After weeks of busy signals and disconnects trying to reach ESD about my delayed benefits, I tried their service and got through to ESD in about 15 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 In my experience, actually talking to an ESD agent is the only way to get these delayed claims moving. They were able to put notes on my account and escalate my case once I explained the situation. I received my backpay about 10 days after that call.

Oh wow, I hadn't heard of this. I've been trying the regular ESD number for days and just get disconnected. I'll definitely check this out - at this point I just need to talk to someone who can help!

I work as an employment counselor, and I can confirm that yes, ESD will continue to process your claim for those 6 weeks. Your eligibility is determined week-by-week, so your current employment status doesn't affect past weeks you were eligible. What's likely happening is that your claim is in adjudication due to the missing employer information. Under Washington state law, employers have 10 days to respond to ESD's request for information, but unfortunately, many employers miss this deadline with no real consequences. I suggest taking these steps: 1. Contact your part-time employer's HR department directly and ask them to respond to ESD's information request 2. Call ESD's claims center and explain that your part-time employer is delaying the process 3. Continue checking your eServices account for any new messages or requests Once processed, you should receive all back benefits you're entitled to, even though you're now employed full-time. The system is designed to eventually pay what's owed, regardless of current employment status.

Hey, just wanted to say I was in this EXACT situation back in January. Got laid off from main job, kept my weekend job, then found new work after 7 weeks. ESD paid me for all 5 weeks I claimed, but it took almost 2 months after I started my new job. They backdated everything correctly. Just make sure all your weekly claims are filed properly!

Thanks for sharing your experience! That makes me feel better. I did file all my weekly claims on time and reported my part-time earnings accurately, so hopefully it'll work out similar to yours.

Quick update on timelines - based on current ESD processing times in 2025, claims with employer response delays are typically resolved within 8-12 weeks from the initial filing date. So you're nearing the typical resolution window. Once your claim is processed, payment is usually issued within 48-72 hours to your chosen payment method (direct deposit or debit card). One other tip: if you call ESD, have your part-time employer's EIN (Employer Identification Number) handy. This helps the agent look up exactly where the delay is occurring in the system.

This is super helpful information. I'm at week 7 now, so hopefully that means I'm getting close to resolution based on that 8-12 week timeline. I'll try to find my employer's EIN before I call.
