Why does ESD deposit unemployment payments on Wednesday when I file early Sunday?

I'm pretty consistent about filing my weekly unemployment claim online every Sunday morning around 7am, but my payment never hits my account until Wednesday. I've noticed some people in this group saying they get paid on Mondays. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is this just how it works for some of us? I'm with Bank of America if that matters. Been unemployed for about 2 months now after getting laid off from construction work. Just wondering if there's a way to speed this up since waiting until mid-week makes it tough to budget sometimes.

The payment timeline depends on your bank and how ESD processes your specific claim. Here's what typically happens:\n\n1. Sunday: You file your weekly claim\n2. Monday: ESD processes the claim (usually overnight Sunday-Monday)\n3. Tuesday: ESD sends the payment to your bank\n4. Wednesday: Your bank makes funds available\n\nSome banks process ACH transfers faster than others. Bank of America tends to be on the slower side with unemployment deposits. Credit unions and online banks are often faster with making the funds available. Also, if you're on direct deposit rather than the ESD debit card, that can affect timing too.

Thanks for explaining that! So it's probably my bank that's the issue. I didn't realize different banks processed them at different speeds. Might be worth looking into switching banks if this goes on much longer.

its DEF your bank!! i have BECU and i always get mine monday afternoon even when i file sunday night!! BofA is notorious for holdin funds, my cousin has same issue

THIS!! I switched from Chase to a local credit union and now get payments literally 36 hours faster. Same exact filing time as before. Banks make money by floating your deposits, they're not incentivized to process quickly.

I file Sunday 9ish and money shows up Tuesday with WSECU. I think I read somewhere the actual processing happens in batches based on your last name or claim ID number or something? Could be totally wrong tho lol

You're partially right - ESD does process in batches, but it's based on when your claim was initially filed and your assigned ESD ID number, not your last name. However, the biggest factor in when you see the money is still your bank's processing time for ACH deposits.

If you're consistently having problems with delayed payments, you might want to check with ESD directly to make sure there isn't an issue with your claim. Sometimes claims get flagged for additional review which can delay processing. \n\nI had trouble getting through on the phones for weeks, but I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an ESD agent in about 15 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3\n\nWhen I finally got through, I discovered there was a small flag on my account that was delaying my payments by 1-2 days each week. The agent removed it and now my payments come through much faster.

I'll check out that service if the delays get worse. For now it sounds like it's just my bank being slow, but good to know there's a way to actually reach ESD if I need to!

The whole ESD payment system is so frustrating! When I was on unemployment in 2023, I'd file at midnight Sunday the SECOND the system opened and STILL wouldn't see money until Thursday sometimes. Called ESD multiple times and got different answers every time. One rep said it was because I had a previous overpayment (resolved years ago), another said it was random, a third said it was because I answered YES to being on a recall list. THE SYSTEM IS RIGGED to make us wait as long as possible!!

I don't think it's rigged exactly, just outdated. My brother works in IT and says the ESD systems run on ancient technology that's prone to delays and glitches. Wish they'd upgrade everything!

I actually tried filing later (around 9pm) last Sunday to see if it made a difference, but nope - still didn't get paid until Wednesday. So I don't think the time of day matters much as long as it's on Sunday.

Have you tried the ESD debit card instead of direct deposit? When I switched to that I started getting payments Tuesday instead of Thursday with my regular bank. Just another option if you're tired of waiting.

That's a good idea, I didn't even consider the ESD card. Are there fees associated with using it? I might look into that option.

Some ATMs have fees but if you transfer the money to your regular account online there's no charge. It's pretty easy to use and the US Bank app works well for managing it.

One thing no one mentioned - check if you have any pending issues on your claim. Log into your eServices account and look under

Just checked my eServices and don't see any pending issues or alerts. Everything looks clean, which makes me think it really is just my bank being slow with processing. Thanks for the suggestion though!
